Most disappointing destination/holiday

For me, it was the Norwegian fjords. Not because they weren’t beautiful (what we saw of them, they were!) but because it was cold, rainy and foggy when we went. One town known for being very pretty was ridiculously busy and there was a cruise ship blocking the view from the restaurant we booked. We knew the prices were going to be high, but expected good quality… when you pay over £100 for a train ticket, you expect there to be toilet roll and soap in the toilets!

where have you been that was disappointing?

Bali. It is a cheap place for the Aussies to go like Spain was for the UK 15 plus years ago. I found it very overrated.

Yes, come to say this. Tourist destination for Oceania.

I can't help but feel that a lot of the destinations on here that are disliked (apart from Tunisia) are because people had unrealistic expectations or didn't research their holiday very well.

For example, I want to visit Malta because I am interested in the history. I know it wouldn't be a beach holiday, and I would carefully research where to stay. Yet so many posters disliked Malta.

I liked Malta- i went for scuba diving but stayed in a lovely city hotel in Valletta for 5 days. Really enjoyed it.

I was really disappointed in Florence. Obviously beautiful bits, but very aware of its own magnificence iykwim.
My worst holiday was Malta. Absolutely hated it.

Oh! Can I ask why you hated Malta? I was thinking of going next year

Unfashionablyearly · 10/07/2025 18:47

Phew. 385 comments and my holiday destination hasnt come up yet.

I love a barren landscape.

That being said, I didnt love Lanzarote, the island feels like one massive hotel. But, if I wanted to go somewhere just to relax and rest, I would go back.

I didn't love Dublin either.

Melbourne is a great town to live in, but I imagine Sydney is better to visit. My top tip for Australia, is go to somewhere like Sydney or Melbourne, hire a car and just drive to a country town in the middle of nowhere for a few days.

I don't get the whole visiting a location to experience street food thing. I like to eat my dinner with a proper knife and fork at a nice table, not perched by the side of a van.

Dublin

Ilitetallycantrememberanythinganymore · 10/07/2025 18:47

The irony of tourists going to touristy places and expecting it to not be touristy!

catbb85 · 10/07/2025 18:48

Paphos was a huge disappointment. We love Greece and Turkey but found Cyprus charmless.

Clocloxx · 10/07/2025 18:49

Rome.. people trying to rob you at every turn, over priced

DemonsandMosquitoes · 10/07/2025 18:49

New York and Paris. Big, dirty and stressful.
Loved Tunisia. You just have to know where to go and only 5 star hotels will do. Never been bothered by men but I went with my husband.

I feel this about French food😆. Everyone pretending it's great. It is not and it's really expensive! There are lots of dull bits of France that are very depressing.

French food is like English food. Booring. I love italian food😊

MyDeftDuck · 10/07/2025 18:53

Sardinia…………dirty, smelly, every street corner stank of urine……The best part about it was actually leaving…...won’t be going there again.

France was dull and the food left a lot to be desired ☹️.

This. I was really disappointed. We went for a friends wedding so not a dream destination for us but was not great.

I loved Sardinia, but I wasn’t really in a busy or touristy area. Glorious beaches, fabulous food, felt very safe and relaxed.

Menorca. Just dire. Rude people, awful food, weather wasnt great. Never been so pleased to leave a holiday destination.

I've not had many disappointing holidays, but I was also going to say Menorca.
We have an apartment in Mallorca that DH inherited, and I announced that I was bored with it (despite always having fun) so we went to Menorca instead for a quick sunny holiday.
Most boring place ever. Back to Mallorca!

I loved Marrakech!

Twobigbabies · 10/07/2025 18:57

What a miserable thread!! I love love love Paris, Barcelona, Washington and Dublin!! Haven't been to many of the others mentioned but I'm sure I'd love them all too. 'Too touristy', 'too poor', 'DH doesn't like Gaudi'.. just wow.

Just came back & this wasn’t our experience at all. We stayed in the south, did you go to the north?

My biggest disappointment trip was Cuba. Hotel was a dive, and the quirky charm they sell you is a stretch to be polite. People trying to take your hat & sunglasses. Hassling you to buy cigars. Their idea of a luxury hotel is far away from mine. Grim.

In terms of destinations, I went to Ellis Island in New York when I was much younger. Never EVER again. Really bad vibe, felt claustrophobic and very stressed as soon as I set foot on it. Lifted a soon as I left.

Glastonbury. Again, very bad vibe (which eased a bit in the lovely church grounds, but not completely). I was looking forward to it but couldn't get out of there fast enough.

I hated Ellis Island - I got really bad evil vibes there like nothing I’ve experienced before.

I had to sit it out while my family went around the exhibits. I couldn’t wait to get out of there.

Interesting. I have not visited Alcatraz but I reckon that would have those vibes too.

Mexico.
Some friends encouraged us to go with them, as their friend had raved about it. We were supposed to be in a 5* resort but seeing armed guards on the gates wasn’t a great welcome, our bedroom looked like it had been modelled on the set of a spaghetti western - all fake wood and weird tiles. The AC unit dripped water all night and clearly had been doing it for a while as there was moss on the wall! Too many people in the resort, having to queue for everything. Food rubbish.

We went for an evening to Cancun, which was a dive and full of dubious looking characters. If you made eye contact with anyone, they wouldn’t stop pestering. The taxi driver taking us back to the hotel sped off as I was still climbing in and I was nearly pulled under the vehicle, how I wasn’t seriously injured I don’t know! He then drove at a break neck speed on the motorway texting with his phone on the steering wheel. It was such a shit hole and felt so lawless, I was genuinely scared that he was messaging ahead in order to arrange for us to be ambushed.

I did get to Chichen Itza though, which was in my bucket list.

I couldn’t wait to leave the country and actually felt a sense of relief once the aircraft had actually taken off and I knew we were heading home.

In the uk, the Eden Project. What a rip off, shabby and overpriced - and I love plants!

Jaywick, I kid you not. The worst accidental holiday destination anyone could ever have

We had similar with the Isle of Sheppey 😂 Absolutely awful place, not sure what we expected from a £9.50 Sun holiday. Kent is lovely though so we only slept there and used it as a base.

I can't believe some of these! I loved Norway, though we had very unusually warm weather.

Love Sri Lanka, found everyone super friendly. No-one ripped us off and the scenery is stunning.

Really loved Cape Town and South Africa in general. Didn't feel unsafe at all and the food was excellent.

My dislikes are the same as most others. Hated Tunisia, didn't like Paris and LA was horrible. Horrible place to drive around and it wasn't much better when you got out of the car.
