Most disappointing destination/holiday

For me, it was the Norwegian fjords. Not because they weren’t beautiful (what we saw of them, they were!) but because it was cold, rainy and foggy when we went. One town known for being very pretty was ridiculously busy and there was a cruise ship blocking the view from the restaurant we booked. We knew the prices were going to be high, but expected good quality… when you pay over £100 for a train ticket, you expect there to be toilet roll and soap in the toilets!

where have you been that was disappointing?

Bali. It is a cheap place for the Aussies to go like Spain was for the UK 15 plus years ago. I found it very overrated.

I had a great time there and found everyone really friendly. Do they like old ladies?

Everyone was super friendly to me in Krakow too. I am also an old lady…

Barcelona was another city we didn’t particularly enjoy (again visited it as a day trip) but I think we planned the day badly (actually didn’t plan it at all). DH has no interest in going back as he doesn’t like Gaudi, but I would be happy to give it another go, perhaps with a friend.

We loved Barcelona, I could happily live there

tsalty · 10/07/2025 18:31

@hyggetyggedotorg ditto, couldn’t wait to leave Tangier and hope I never have to go back.

Barcelona, however… currently sat here really looking forward to the next three weeks I will spend here. Have always loved it, it brings back memories from certain seasons of my life. Also, Paris. I’d say that’s my happy place, love south Florida…

overall, I think the only place I’ve ever been that I wouldn’t want to revisit is Morocco

FeyreandRhysand · 10/07/2025 18:31

Barbados - overcast but still unbearably hot, seaweed so thick you couldn’t make it to the shore and the towns had nothing going for them. Couldn’t wait to get home.

Florence - I thought the whole place would be white with red rooftops and generally found it underwhelming, too busy and too hot (and we were only there half a day)

ThatCyanCat · 10/07/2025 18:31

I can see why Vegas isn't to everyone's taste but I just loved how absolutely bonkers and joyfully tacky it was. Loved the theatre too.

Crikeyalmighty · 10/07/2025 18:32

So much of this in all but the obvious usual suspects can be down to so many things too, who you were with, money, weather, hotel etc !!

WilfredsPies · 10/07/2025 18:32

Turin. We stayed in a beautiful hotel and it was luxury all the way, but it just left me completely cold. I’d always wanted to go there, but I was so disappointed.

Rolopolo2 · 10/07/2025 18:33

St Ives

Vienna - I felt unsafe (and I’ve travelled the world) and it was overrated.

Paris and New York. Both just busy and unfriendly

Hated Vienna too. It reminded me of bad times in that part of Europe. Do you know that Austria and Germany are banned from ever uniting? The people were rude too.

Opplesandbononos · 10/07/2025 18:35

Jaywick, I kid you not. The worst accidental holiday destination anyone could ever have

We do get some advantages. I find young men on trains incredibly helpful and friendly. I always think I must remind them of their granny.

I don't understand the Santorini hype. There are so many Greek islands which are almost identical, they're just harder to get to.
They're also ten times quieter, and the food is way better.

Which ones would you recommend as I'm always open to ideas? I went to Corfu many years ago - underwhelmed.

There was a very interesting TV programme about its origins and its present.

DJSteves · 10/07/2025 18:37

Anyone finding the Maldives on the dull side need to go to the Seychelles instead. Cool as fuck place. We hired a car and spent a week listening to reggae and swimming in random picture postcard beaches. Loved it.

Geeez where is good to go then ?

Planning trip to California Disneyland with child in December - Jan. undecided about other US places to stop at. This thread doesn’t get me too inspired 😆

I'm from the states and I think CA Disney is much nicer (albeit smaller) than Florida Disney. In that area, you can visit local beaches, hike in parks, and visit Carlsbad too.

Karpathos, Naxos, Paros to name a few.

StepAwayFromGoogling · 10/07/2025 18:38

Amsterdam. Just meh.

Lapland 🙈 we did still love it in ways, just not what I imagined but I think it’s because we did Rovanemmi - just way too commercialised and busy. Next time we’ll do Levi and stay in the Northen Lights village

Levi is lovely

HolidayHattie · 10/07/2025 18:40

I've enjoyed lots of the places mentioned and am a bit puzzled at some comments. Reminds me of a review of India saying "Food is too spicy."

My biggest disappointment was, as per a PP, Niagara Falls (Canadian side, didn't get to the US side.) So seedy, very reminiscent of Blackpool. Once you've seen the falls from the viewpoint, which doesn't take long, the rest of the day felt like wasted time. The boat tours had just stopped for the season (October) and I couldn't afford the helicopter ride.

Just reminds me of the iltalian job. Ours was Genoa and the Italian riveria it was dirty and industrial and the food was not great. Very disappointing.

HazelCritic · 10/07/2025 18:42

Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Santa Cruz. I've travelled solo around Asia and never felt as unsafe as I did on the California coast.

TheAmusedQuail · 10/07/2025 18:42

Shitzerland. Yes, beautiful. But incredibly boring. People unfriendly. Food very very meh.

IanStirlingrocks · 10/07/2025 18:43

York, interesting enough but a horrible and unfriendly place and I won’t be going back.

Stockholm - the dullest few days of my life

Oh I love Stockholm!! I love visiting all the little islets in the archipelago.
