Late arrival at hotel. Will we get food?

Mostly we self catering but recently have been going on holiday to hotels on a half board basis - where they cater well for food allergies.

This is the first time we'll be arriving late in the eve ing. Maybe 9.30pm/10pm. Does the hotel ever provide food late if that is the case?

Some hotels run a reduced room service 24hours.

they usually say on their website if so.

if not they can usually sort a plate of fruit.

bugalugs45 · 05/07/2025 12:02

I doubt it , dinner served in restaurants usually finishes around 830 /9 in my experience , but you might be lucky.
nobody apart from the hotel can really answer this for you

BitOutOfPractice · 05/07/2025 12:03

Email the hotel and ask what time the kitchen closes? How would we know?

MayaPinion · 05/07/2025 12:03

The kitchen will probably be closed, but you could call ahead and ask. They may be able to make something simple like sandwiches or soup.

Wowzel · 05/07/2025 12:03

When we went to Turkey there was a full buffet all night because of late arrivals, but think it depends where you go

Michele09 · 05/07/2025 12:04

We've had a cold platter left for us on arrival in the dining room but you would need to check with the hotel.

16wimb · 05/07/2025 12:18

Well it very much depends on the hotel, surely?

Supidupi3289 · 05/07/2025 12:18

Send them an email!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 05/07/2025 12:20

We’ve had smaller buffets available to us when we’ve arrived late (10pm ish). All courses plus drinks, just a little less choice.

i would expect something to be available but would contact the hotel to double check.

shedroof · 05/07/2025 12:20

Why on earth would you ask mumsnet rather than the hotel?!!

Titasaducksarse · 05/07/2025 12:40

Hi
Aren't there any other food places open nearby. That's not that late for some countries to have normal evening meal.

Alternatively have something on plane and pack snacks in your bag.

jesihar · 05/07/2025 12:42

Totally depends where you go.

hotel we were in Mallorca food was 730-1030. Then a buffet for ad hoc arrivals.

here, rural Scotland, highly unlikely unless you phone and ask.

bookmarket · 05/07/2025 12:44

I will ask the hotel. Just asking our od curiosity really - like you might ask a few friends. No need to be outraged by my post anyone. 😊

Normally we'd eat at the airport but we're flying from a small one and there's nowhere safe to eat.

Depends, I was offered “a tapas plate and night cap” on arriving at 12.30am at a hotel in Ibiza and the manager was disappointed when i said no thank you, I’ve been offered fruit and pastries at reception in the past too but for evening flights I eat on the plane (I take my own food, as long as it not jelly or pot of hummus they let it through security).

DeepfriedPizza · 05/07/2025 12:51

I'm on holiday now and we arrived late. They had put out sandwiches and fruit. If you're on Facebook a lot of hotels have pages set up where questions like this are asked a lot.

minnienono · 05/07/2025 12:53

If you have special dietary requirements, relying on the kitchen late at night is a gamble, I had enough issue trying to refuse the tapas, they couldn’t get the concept that I can’t eat late due to acid reflux and can’t tolerate gluten (I’m not coeliac)

Invisablepanic · 05/07/2025 13:00

If we've arrived late we've either been allowed into the dining room with a reduced buffet or we've been provided with platters in our room.

G5000 · 05/07/2025 13:09

depends on the hotel. Some little modest place where even receptionist goes home by 9, probably not. 5* AI will of course provide food at any hour of the day or night. Just call and say you're arriving late and if kitchen is closed by then, could they prepare something for you.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 05/07/2025 13:15

We’ve aways been given a sandwich / salad /
crips type thing. Once we got the dregs of the AI. That was really really bad. It was 01.00 and the buffet closed at 21.30

IAmNotASheep · 05/07/2025 14:39

Order room service if it’s still available but the obvious answer is to ask the hotel

deismevav · 05/07/2025 14:56

Ask the hotel, not Mumsnet.

OurMavis · 05/07/2025 20:23

Some do, most don't. It's no more likely if it's 5 than 3.
If you're going to a resort that arrival time isn't too late to eat out.
I usually book an afternoon flight to avoid an overnight stay in a UK airport and I'll add an extra night on the booking to make up for it.
In my last 4 holidays not one hotel has offered food when we've arrived late.
What I also do is skip the transfer coach and get in a taxi, that can knock an hour or two off the trip.

samarrange · 05/07/2025 21:32

If you have paid for half board or above, and you arrive after the buffet is closed, they will produce a plate of cold meats and salad, etc.

This happened to DP and me on the first package holiday we ever took and when we arrived at midnight, an unimpressive plate of cold meats and salad was what we got. It was very disappointing, and I remember thinking "WTF, is this what we've signed up for". The rest of the holiday, the food was absolutely amazing. They just didn't make much of an effort for the late arrivals. But then we weren't staying at a 5-star place.

If your expected arrival time at the hotel is 9:30pm then you could maybe grab something at the airport when you land, but eating while travelling is never much fun. Maybe have a good lunch before you set off, take (or buy at the departure end) a nice sandwich, and just write off the first evening.

CoastalCalm · 05/07/2025 23:04

What do you mean by safe to eat ? I would just take some extra snacks with me to eat on the flight / transfer incase

Vera87 · 05/07/2025 23:10

Arrived to our hotel in canaries and provided with a sandwich crisps and fruit at half ten at night
