Thermal spa breaks Germany/Poland.... Other Europe

Dh has a big birthday coming up and fancies a sauna/thermal spa type place...
Looked at Erding near Munich but he really fancies staying on site and the accommodation looks either expensive for what it is ..or basic self catering....so not very special..
I've found a couple of places in Poland but its harder to work out what the accommodation is like..

Has anyone been to any thermal baths type resort tgat have a wide range of saunas/thermal waters .not fancy massage type.. that have nice hotels to stay at! Decent food and preferably not too long a flight and some other options for trips/sightseeing..

4nights probably...budget almost less of an issue

Have you looked at the one in Budapest?

Bjorkdidit · 12/05/2025 12:59

Yes loads of spas in Budapest plus interesting city break type stuff. Your money would probably go further there too.

I remember reading about there being a lot of spas on the Hel peninsula just off Gdansk in Poland but I don't know much about them.

Aqua Dome in Austria is amazing. Not much scope for sightseeing but we did some stunning hikes, including one to a massive waterfall.

Agree re Budapest - a great destination for a weekend away. Hotel Gellert is worth looking at, depending on your budget.

Aachen, Germany, is a spa town. We’ve been twice - both times at winter to coincide with their amazing Christmas market. We went to the spa the first time and absolutely loved it! There are inside and outside areas and different floor (be aware, top floor fully nekkid, which is fine, on,y we had no idea when we went up there first time and neither of us fancied that so we went back downstairs!), but there is large pool, several different smaller pools/spas, some with waterfalls etc. usual steam rooms, cold pools etc as well. I’m really not a spa person but it did wonders for my muscles (musculaskelatal condition), and was just so relaxing. One of the main reasons for booking to go back last year (I think ten years between trips) was as much for the spa as it was the market. In fact, I’d say the spa was the main reason, as there are lots of Xmas markets in Germany to choose from, obviously, so we could have gone elsewhere. The second visit was just exactly as we remembered it and we were so pleased we went. And hopefully, health allowing, we would go back. We loved it so much, that even with my condition (travel is extremely hard for me), I’d still go again as long as I could handle the travel.

i would definitely recommend. We drove - using le shuttle - but I recently found out that the eurotrain from St Pancras actually goes directly there. That’s not possible for me, unfortunately, but would probably be a better alternative for most people.

Oh, sorry, I’m not sure if that one has accommodation attached, but both times we stayed in airbnbs. The most recent one was amazing. So nice we’d quite like to stay in this particular one again if we were to go back - we’d quite like to visit the city in the spring/summer next time though.

Thanks for starting this OP!

Look at the current thread about Lake Constance.

Budapest

averythinline · 12/05/2025 22:26

Ooh some good places to check out... He doesn't fancy Budapest as has been before and they are generally small6... Its the big multiplex sort of thing that appeals...
One we can get the train to even better...

Erding is excellent, I’ve been a few times. It’s really close to the train station so worth looking at hotels in the surrounding towns to see if something suits you.

cathyandclaire · 12/05/2025 22:50

Lots of stunning spas in Karlovy Vary in Czech Republic - it's a really pretty place too. We stayed at the one that was the location for Casino Royale- worth a look.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 12/05/2025 22:53

I haven’t been in Poland but I was told that it’s a common activity for older people there for a holiday.

Bjorkdidit · 13/05/2025 06:09

Does it have to be abroad? I really fancy the Buxton Crescent in the Peak District. There's also the Woodland in the Lancashire countryside or Rudding Park near Harrogate.

The Woodland is probably the most impressive spa but the other two probably have better 'minibreak' places of interest nearby.

Bjorkdidit · 13/05/2025 06:10

Or go to Iceland and the Sky Lagoon on the outskirts of Reykjavik?

ProfessionalWhimsicalSkidaddler · 13/05/2025 06:12

Therme Bucharest Romania. It’s cheap, wizzair flights are cheap and there’s a hotel on the complex. Waterpark and adult only section which is quite frankly amazing

A lot of people have been going there on the Extreme Day Trips Facebook group and apparently it is rammed at weekends.

MinnieMountain · 13/05/2025 06:19

Baden-Baden is lovely. The Roman baths are participating special. You can get the train there but it’s a bit of a faff.

Ah that’s shit. I went there on a weekday - I think Monday and it wasn’t bad.
