Most expensive place you have ever visited?

We live in Zone 1 so thought we are used to expensive prices. Where have you been that you thought “ouch! that’s expensive.”

For us it has to be Mykonos and Ibiza, total rip offs. We didn’t find New York too bad and thought Barbados was okay too.

I think a lot of the time, you can avoid the worst of the high prices.

We went to Ibiza last year and didn't find it that expensive, certainly restaurant alcohol was cheaper than the UK, groceries normal Spanish prices, meals out about the same as UK too. But we didn't go clubbing in San Antonio or Ibiza Town, just a chilled few days in the sun in Santa Eularia.

We also went to the famously expensive Iceland a couple of years ago and it was more expensive but not alarmingly so and the only time I thought 'how fucking much' was a fancy salt gift set for £60. Some things such as coffee shops were cheaper than UK chains.

Reykayvik was pricey, but not as bad as I'd expected if you stay away from alcoholic drinks.

Stavanger/Norway stands out. That was 20 years ago though.

Titasaducksarse · 09/05/2025 07:28

We went to Denmark and Sweden 2 years ago and everyone commented before we went on how expensive it was.
We didn't think so but then we're campers so don't eat out etc a lot anyway. The food we did have out was excellent quality and only on a par with big city prices here anyway.
1 place the beer was pricier but nowhere near how others had projected the expense to be.

Copenhagen

Westfacing · 09/05/2025 07:33

I visit my son in Switzerland - it's expensive.

A glass of wine is around £8-10 for 100mls... yes 100mls 😱 that's about two gulps!

SatsumaDog · 09/05/2025 07:33

Iceland ( luckily it was a business trip) and Zermatt. I don’t travel a huge amount though.

RampantIvy · 09/05/2025 07:35

Dublin in 1988.

Mandarinaduck · 09/05/2025 07:36

Norway

Sweden in 2012. Felt I might as well attach a hose to my wallet. Having said that, I was stating with family and we didn't eat out, plus used public transport which is very reasonable. Oddly enough I think the classic Swedish evening out is going round to someones house, or a picnic on the beach plus a swim or skating depending on the season. You have to be seriously well heeled to eat out or visit 'days out' kinds of places.

Alltheburpees · 09/05/2025 07:41

Oslo last year.
Scandinavia in general.

minnienono · 09/05/2025 07:41

New York - due to tax and tip being added. U.K. is surprisingly reasonable

sprungingspring · 09/05/2025 07:41

Switzerland. Prohibitively expensive. Even in grocery shops. Went last year. Cheapest wine in a non fancy restaurant was £55/bottle.

Don’t go to The Ivy Asia - it’s the same there! Even the Coca Cola is miniature bottles

minnienono · 09/05/2025 07:43

Been to Ibiza which wasn’t that expensive and Finland wasn’t too bad either

mimiasovitch · 09/05/2025 07:46

I’m in Switzerland right now and it really is awfully expensive. We’re visiting my daughter, and were hoping that she was exaggerating, but nope.

itsgettingweird · 09/05/2025 07:47

Stratford!!!

So if Zone 3 feels expensive to me coming from south coast I dread to think what those other places would feel like 🫣😂

TizerorFizz · 09/05/2025 07:48

Switzerland is expensive. So is Norway. They just don’t do cheap cafes!

Oh yes, we're forgetting the UK. My particular bug bear is restaurants that don't have beer on draft so charge you £5 for a small bottle of beer, so effectively £10 a pint.

I rarely have wine of spirits out in the UK because prices are just stupid. A pp mentions £50+ bottles of wine in Switzerland but you could easily pay that in very average places in the UK that are not even in London because £11-12 a 175 ml glass, which is common, is £44-48 per bottle.

CassieAusten · 09/05/2025 07:49

Didn't find Iceland too bad if you were thoughtful with your choices - Norway, on the other hand, is the only place my husband has tried to buy a couple of local beers in the shop but to come out empty handed and reeling at the prices! Finland was ok really too.

CherryRipe1 · 09/05/2025 07:50

Definitely Iceland but it's so fab that it's worth it. We got snacks at a supermarket and drank modestly to keep the budget on track. I found things like burgers, chips and a drink very expensive even from corner shop type places in Reykjavik. Eating out in nice restaurants didn't seem so exhorbitant compared to fast food.

Mansionscoldandgrey · 09/05/2025 07:50

My local Co-op

Capri, Dubrovnik

HermioneWeasley · 09/05/2025 07:53

I was prepared for Scandinavia but it was Seattle which took me by surprise - more expensive London

DancingNotDrowning · 09/05/2025 07:53

Capri: €15 for a small bottle of Coke in the piazza.
