I want to holiday like Poirot

OK, not the murders. Ignore the murders. But I am looking for an English hotel with charm and elegance where everyone chats nicely and maybe there's a morning tennis match or boat trip and we all have afternoon tea or cocktails on the lawn. Interesting strangers and ideally also a library in case I need a bit of book time. Potentially the option of kedgeree?

Does this sort of place still exist? Have you stayed there? Could I do it on a budget of less than say £150 a night? If there's no mobile phone signal I could live with that.

Sounds amazing- no suggestions but hoping the hive mind comes through!

CalypsoCuthbertson · 03/05/2025 18:15

I’d love that - following! I’ve seen holidays like an art trip with an artist and they all bond over cultural trips and sessions of painting - that sounds really fun and I’d love to do that when my DC have left home.

NewAgeNewMe · 03/05/2025 18:16

The Nare in Cornwall but not at £150 a night. Gorgeous though!

midlandsmummy123 · 03/05/2025 18:17

Burgh Island hotel?

AllTangledUpInDaisiesAndDiadems · 03/05/2025 18:18

There's that Art Deco hotel somewhere on an island. But I've no idea where so that's not much help! 😆

AllTangledUpInDaisiesAndDiadems · 03/05/2025 18:18

That's the one!

HiddenInCubeOfCheese · 03/05/2025 18:18

What they said!

Jack Whitehall and his dad went there in one episode of their show, so you can have a good snoop

Sandylittleknees · 03/05/2025 18:19

Yes, I was going to say burgh island too. The Nare is fabulous but ££££

Oh that is gorgeous. Triple my budget and more on top so probably out of reach. But I'm going to spend ages looking at that site and daydreaming. They have croquet!!

Adding 'croquet lawn ' to the wish list.

Have you stayed? Was it as amazing as it looks?

I think a Cunard cruise is probably the nearest modern equivalent . Heavy on afternoon tea , big library, interesting strangers and round the clock genteel activities.

To be honest I have always really fancied the idea of a cruise. I hadn't thought of it in the context of an elegant 1920s holiday vibe but it's an interesting idea. I'm going to have a hard think about this, thank you.

Also: the word genteel is exactly the word. That's what I want. Ideally with food Cake

Burgh Island isn't going to be doable on £150 - sorry

Stayed twice for very special occasions. It’s sublime. But I’m not sure we could afford to go again. We booked last minute for late offers midweek in term time. It can be done but flexibility is key but not at £150 per night. And you are expected to change for dinner. It’s truly wonderful.

NewAgeNewMe · 03/05/2025 18:51

Puts on list 😍😍

Cognacsoft · 03/05/2025 18:51

It’s too expensive but Reid’s Hotel in Madeira would be perfect for you @summergreens .

AllTangledUpInDaisiesAndDiadems · 03/05/2025 18:51

Ah sorry, got excited and missed the budget considerations!!

Might be worth referring and saving for a bit longer?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 03/05/2025 18:55

Gidleigh Park near Chagford

Also out of budget but when DH and I stayed there I spent most of the evening thinking someone would die over their soup and Miss Marple or Hercule Poirot would make an entrance

Feverdream02 · 03/05/2025 18:56

I want to wear a cloche hat and a knee length tennis skirt when I’m there.

MarisPiper92 · 03/05/2025 19:02

Can we also go on holiday as often as Poirot does, please?

@summergreens if you can avert your eyes to the rest of Morecambe
The Midland is really luxurious.

https://www.inncollectiongroup.com/the-midland-hotel/

We randomly stayed there a couple of years ago (needed to be in the area for a weekend, and everywhere else was booked out) and had an unexpectedly great experience. We ended up with a. lovely suite with a rooftop terrace (all that was left at the last minute). Service at dinner and breakfast was fabulous.

I was telling some friends about it, only to find that one of them spent her honeymoon there in the 1960's :-)

Hollieandtheivie · 03/05/2025 19:06

What a lovely thread.

Paaseitjes · 03/05/2025 19:09

You can do B&B at most of the Oxford colleges during the summer, some with tennis courts and croquet, and all with libraries. Not guaranteed to bump into anyone interesting unless you make a lot of effort though!
