I want to holiday like Poirot

OK, not the murders. Ignore the murders. But I am looking for an English hotel with charm and elegance where everyone chats nicely and maybe there's a morning tennis match or boat trip and we all have afternoon tea or cocktails on the lawn. Interesting strangers and ideally also a library in case I need a bit of book time. Potentially the option of kedgeree?

Does this sort of place still exist? Have you stayed there? Could I do it on a budget of less than say £150 a night? If there's no mobile phone signal I could live with that.

For England, Burgh Island
For Wales, Portmeirion
For Egypt, my favourite by a country mile, The Winter Palace Hotel, Luxor - Agatha Christie is rumoured to have written at least part of Death On The Nile here.

Not in the budget at the moment OP, I realise that, but it's nice to get some ideas and dream. I dream of returning to Egypt again one day, this time with my DC.

15 or so years ago we stayed at a hotel in Grassington. It was a 16th century building and we were invited to drinks in the drawing room before dinner. I can't remember the name unfortunately but the people there were all posher than us. We had a voucher (not Groupon the other one). Not very helpful but it seemed quite Poirot at the time.

Wildflowerswildhorses · 04/05/2025 22:24

Oh me too. I'd like to go on the the Orient Express preferably with Poirot just in case there are any murders!

Loving this thread thank you op 💖

How about Deauville in France? (Location of Murder on the Links.) So very chic! )Goes away to look for hotels.)

LunaTheCat · 04/05/2025 23:31

MissFritten65.. looks glorious! Yes , an expensive holiday. But my lifetime dream is the animals.. I am spending 8 nights on train then to Botswana for a week.
BUT was there a murder? I will be most disappointed if there is none.

midlandsmummy123 · 04/05/2025 23:50

If there is a murder then I hope you can call on Captain Hastings and Miss Lemon, obviously not Inspector Japp.

Icepinkeskimo · 04/05/2025 23:58

If I had the funds, I would be booking the Art Deco Suite at Sea Containers Hotel, which looks fabulous, it even has its own art deco cocktail menu. Ohh the decedent of it all, would be amazing.

@LunaTheCat no murder but currently at The Victoria Falls Hotel which fits the OP's brief.

Well you need burgh island surely?

piscofrisco · 05/05/2025 07:40

We went recently via secret escapes for £250 for a night (it was a Sunday in March however so you need to pick your time!)

PlanetOtter · 05/05/2025 07:49

Pre-war I went to Baron’s Hotel in Aleppo where Christie spent a lot of time and I think set some books.

It was very odd - every attempt to be an English country hotel but in urban Syria. Charming, though.

@summergreens if you can avert your eyes to the rest of Morecambe
The Midland is really luxurious.

Those rooms look like a premier inn.

Morethanthis71 · 05/05/2025 10:28

Look at The Imperial Hotel, Torquay. I used to holiday there as a child and it was how you described. Went back a few years ago and it looked exactly the same (I'm sure you could find a tennis match / boat trip nearby).

LoserWinner · 05/05/2025 10:35

Hambleton Hall, Rutland. Not cheap, but wonderful - Noel Coward hung out there.

I was going to suggest this too. I think it’s featured in Sleeping Murder - Miss Marple rather than Poirot but still. Looks like you can get a good deal off peak too

The Victoria in Sidmouth. Like stepping back in time. Not sure if it would fit into your budget though…

Unique Voysey house on Windermere home of the Windermere Motor Boat Racing Club. Fascinating place and you can (optionally) become a member. Their website is very interesting and you can stay within your budget

And it has been used as a film location for Poirot Dumb Witness 1996

Garden & Terraces | WMBRC

Probably laid-out by the Arts and Crafts designer Thomas Mawson, Broad Leys has a mix of formal terraces, lakeside lawns and wild rockeries.

My husband used to work in Sea Containers House when it was an office block so it doesn't have that luxury hotel vibe for me.....

I think a Cunard cruise is probably the nearest modern equivalent . Heavy on afternoon tea , big library, interesting strangers and round the clock genteel activities.

You beat me to it! I did a Cunard cruise last year for this very reason - and loved it!
