I want to holiday like Poirot

OK, not the murders. Ignore the murders. But I am looking for an English hotel with charm and elegance where everyone chats nicely and maybe there's a morning tennis match or boat trip and we all have afternoon tea or cocktails on the lawn. Interesting strangers and ideally also a library in case I need a bit of book time. Potentially the option of kedgeree?

Does this sort of place still exist? Have you stayed there? Could I do it on a budget of less than say £150 a night? If there's no mobile phone signal I could live with that.

So At Bertram's hotel was either based on Brown's hotel in London or Flemings Mayfair Hotel, both look lovely but I think Brown's is more in Miss Marple's line. I wouldn't recommend the Sea Container place, that I have visited and it was a total letdown.

Oops just remembered the thread is about Poirot's holidays and not Miss M.

I definitely wouldn't want to go to the archaeological dig where he was in a tent, on a camp bed, and it was too hot with sand everywhere!

Surely he had a local to fan him, bring him refreshing drinks and roll mats out?

You beat me to it! I did a Cunard cruise last year for this very reason - and loved it!

I want to do a short cruise on the Queen Victoria - it has a library.

More Victorian than Art Deco but definitely an English country house at sea feel about it

It looks as though Cunard's Queen Anne has a more Art Deco feel.

This is the library

Blimey some of you live lives that are too expensive even for my fantasies! I have looked at and dreamed about everything posted but £450 ish a night?! I thought I was already being extravagant!

New plan. Those of us who dream of elegance but are paid like Miss Lemon we need to combine forces booking a cheapish cruise and bring our style on board. Am sure we can fake fabulousness for a week. Could someone bring the creme de cassis?

And maybe one day a mysterious godmother we never met will write her will and suddenly everything else becomes possible?

The Ventnor hotel starts from £180/night for a single or £200 for a double. Not quite down at £150 (it has gone up since I stayed there), but not in the £450/night league.

Of course, the best (and most expensive) way to do Poirot is a trip on the Orient Express. Start saving now…

shakeitoffshakeacocktail · 07/05/2025 23:16

Yes please! Adding it to the list

AllTangledUpInDaisiesAndDiadems · 09/05/2025 12:04

Yes it's the Orient Express for me, too! But I already have so many things to save for.

Might have to be a celebration for my 60th...

Love all these ideas, especially the cruise ships with libraries! Have friends who have been to Burgh Island and raved about it.

Talland Bay Hotel is amazing with sloping lawns down to the sea.

Not £150 a night though. You can't get much for that these days!

What about a weekend break and stay at the Grand London Hotel in Istanbul? https://londrahotel.net/

It's where Agatha Christie stayed and wrote some of her books - i haven't stayed but the roof terrace has extraordinary views. And it's right in the middle of the city

I stated at the Nare years ago and had the kedgeree for breakfast. They also did tea and cake every afternoon and there was a decanter of sherry in our room. It was very nice but the staff were a bit snooty.

LunaTheCat · 09/05/2025 23:58

Ohh.. just googling that hotel in Istanbul … looks amazing !
