I want to holiday like Poirot

OK, not the murders. Ignore the murders. But I am looking for an English hotel with charm and elegance where everyone chats nicely and maybe there's a morning tennis match or boat trip and we all have afternoon tea or cocktails on the lawn. Interesting strangers and ideally also a library in case I need a bit of book time. Potentially the option of kedgeree?

Does this sort of place still exist? Have you stayed there? Could I do it on a budget of less than say £150 a night? If there's no mobile phone signal I could live with that.

oh, OP! Sounds fantastic! I hope you find what you're looking for.

Oh this is my type of thread. A few years ago saga did an art deco agatha christie style cruise.... my friend's Dad had received the brochure and gave it to me, was gutted to find I was 30 years too long!

Can we also go on holiday as often as Poirot does, please?

It always ends up being a working holiday. 😂

NancyJoan · 03/05/2025 20:18

‘Lord Dawlish?’ Emphasis on the Lord. Judy Parfitt perfection!

Turmerictolly · 03/05/2025 23:23

The Scarlett Hotel in Cornwall looks nice but sadly out of budget.

stickybear · 03/05/2025 23:26

Maybe Saunton Sands hotel in Devon? I haven't stayed there but it has an art deco feel, and might be just about in budget?

The Scarlett Hotel in Cornwall looks nice but sadly out of budget.

The location is lovely but it has open plan bathrooms which basically means the loo is in your bedroom (like in a prison cell.......) Bedruthen Steps next door (same ownership) gets you the location with a little less expense.

icelolly12 · 04/05/2025 12:00

Think you'll likely need to up your budget a fair bit OP.

I was going to say this hotel. We stayed in the room Enid Blyton used to stay in. It’s not that expensive & you can get great deals on secret escapes.

ChompandaGrazia · 04/05/2025 12:05

Reid’s Hotel in Madeira was on the Beyond the Lobby series on iplayer. I think that’s what it’s called. The one with Sue Perkins looking around fancy hotels.

LunaTheCat · 04/05/2025 12:07

Ohh .. Burgh Island looks amazing ! Very very expensive though!
in August I am going on a train trip through South Africa and Zimbabwe .. it’s called Rovos Rail.. I am hoping for a nice modern to two.. there is breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and a 4 course dinner and all the booze you want . It’s a vastly cheaper. Version of the Orient Express. No croquet on lawn but there may be giraffes.

LunaTheCat · 04/05/2025 12:08

Sorry MURDER or tow!

HairyToity · 04/05/2025 12:08

Pale Hall near Bala is closest to Poirot Hotel I've stayed in, way over £150 per night though!

beetr00 · 04/05/2025 12:09

@summergreens

didn't dare check the prices though 😊

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/05/2025 12:10

You're going to need to increase your budget.

Floral printed silk tea dresses don't come cheap.

Need to go a bit further but St Augustus Abbey at the bottom of Loch Ness in the Scottish highlands is amazing. Tennis courts, croquet, manicured gardens full of like minded people. Beautiful little town as well with some lovely restaurants and shops however other than the town very remote - no big supermarkets nearby. Also a lot of lovely scenery and plenty of mountain/hill hikes if you are that way inclined.

Not sure about a library but also has a old fashioned games room with snooker/ chess/ puzzle etc as well a very warm indoor swimming pool which is also inside the Abbey so you can swim while enjoying the beautiful architecture and views of the mountains/loch

Cherrycola4 · 04/05/2025 12:40

https://grand-villa-heights.com/ I stayed here when it was the Ravenhall Hotel. It had a golf course, indoor pool and a very vintage feel.

Maggieminor · 04/05/2025 13:54

I feel there's a business idea here !

Not for £150 a night though
