We've got a big anniversary in October and would like to go on a nice holiday.
We like culture food wine wildlife a mix of city and maybe a few days beach at the end.
We have been lucky enough to have been quite a few places but October doesn't seem a great month for travel!!

We go away a lot in October. Highlights have included Egypt. We flew to Hurghada then went to Rohanou Red Sea resort. They sorted a car to Luxor where we stayed a few days, them car back and a few more days by the sea. That was last October. We have also been to Greece (Athens and Peloponnese) Morocco, Sri Lanka, Southern India (Kerala) Our only error was Thailand where it rained 23 hours a day for our 2nd week.

Rhodes or Kos would still be pleasant for sightseeing and sun then.

Canaries also good but a premium for half term as many many people head there

Seville or Lisbon? From Lisbon tag on a few beach days in Cascais & a visit to Sintra

Cape Town.

Love going away in October. I guess late September would be better for some places but we have school age kids so end of October it is!

Last few that we loved:

Crete - lovely temp for walking about, did food classes, saw lots of ancient sites, ate lovely food and went kayaking and mountain walks. Also lovely coastal boutique hotels.

Sorrento / Pompeii / Vesuvius - up and down the coast on the train seeing the sights. Headed over to capri for the day as well. Lovely, also everything was pretty expensive apart from food.

Valencia - stayed in old town, pottered around lovely old city, went to modern out of town museum / sciences bit, trip out to the hot springs (not that hot in October but we still went in!), loads of gorgeous food and bars.

Cyprus for us every October still warm but no humidity

whippleproceedure · 16/03/2025 17:10

Thankyou so much for the replies. We have been to all the places mentioned and were hoping to go somewhere new!
I guess we're just spoilt!!

Mauritius.

What about Salem, New Hampshire for something different? Would be fun in October but might be busy. Perhaps if you weren't there for the 31st it might not be too busy?

whippleproceedure · 16/03/2025 17:20

I would really like to go to the south of the USA but my husband isn't keen. I might have to work on him!
I've been to Mauritius and although we had a lovely time I'd rather go somewhere new.

Maybe it would be helpful if you list where you have been to.

TheBirdintheCave · 16/03/2025 17:21

We’re going to Florence this October :) Not expecting it to be beach weather though!

Mama1980 · 16/03/2025 17:26

Liechtenstein - culturally unique, lots of great walking and quaint places. You’d need to cross the border into Switzerland if you were styling more than 2-3 days as it’s tiny but it’s also lovely. Might be snow that time of year as well on the high ground.

HolidayHattie · 16/03/2025 17:28

If I were free to go anywhere in October, it would be Bhutan, although obviously there's no beach resort. They have several festivals in October. Eye-wateringly expensive but a bucket list trip for me.

whippleproceedure · 16/03/2025 17:32

I really don't want to list out where I've been as I think it would be a bit too much . But I've especially enjoyed Argentina Australia and South Africa. Love Europe but we already have a couple of weekends away lined up. So was hoping to do a long hall .
Thankyou all for your suggestions.

October is also a great month to visit South Africa and that would cover your whole wish list: wildlife, culture, beach etc.

ETA:
Cross-posted; I see you've already been to SA. This thread is very frustrating because you don't want to list everywhere you've been, but every time someone suggests something, you respond with "been there."

I'm out.

Ve been in Oct and the weather was very warm, though a bit cool first thing in the morning. It’s a beautiful city and I’m sure you will enjoy it

Apfelkuchen · 16/03/2025 17:44

Japan, cities and Alps and onsen, autumn leaves season 🍂

ShanghaiDiva · 16/03/2025 17:47

i’ve visited the following in October: Bhutan, South Korea, Japan, Nepal Cambodia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
Its also a good time to visit Sapa in North Vietnam.

TizerorFizz · 16/03/2025 17:48

@whippleproceedureAs you have travelled a lot I’m surprised you don’t know where’s good in October!

We are going to Nepal and Bhutan this October. We have been to California then. Also Virginia and North Carolina. Obviously Maine and Vermont would be autumnal. Shame DH isn’t keen. Japan is great then.

Obviously most countries in South America, eg Chile and Easter Island. Brazil? East Africa is ok too. Namibia also. There’s a lot to see in South Africa. Have you really seen all of it? We have had several holidays there and found various areas have different attractions. It’s a great destination for all sorts of reasons. Plenty of options beyond Europe.

ShanghaiDiva · 16/03/2025 17:48

it’s also a good time to travel in China, but avoid Golden Week which is the first week of October.
