i know the beaches are supposed to be gorgeous. But I am trying to work out why it doesn’t seem to be popular. Are the locals friendly? Is the food good? Can anyone give any advice? I can’t seem to find much information on mumsnet of anyone discussing or recommending

Having been there a few times to busy places I'd say it was very popular!

I went there over 20 years ago - it was lovely. great food and hiking in the mountains. it was not strongly oriented towards english-speaking tourists, we had to use French at times, but gets lots of Italian and french tourists in the summers.

I've been there and would go back in a heartbeat. Alghero was wonderful, architecturally and culinarily.

Do you think they are friendly to English speaking? I read somewhere that they like to have Italians holidaying there

Of course the food is good - it’s Italy! Yes a lot of Italians holiday there. But they speak English so I would say go and enjoy yourself.

Been a couple of times. Great food, people friendly! Lots and lots of tourists!
One time we stayed at the Neilson beach club with all the Brits(!) and then travelled around various other places- inland and the coast. Fabulous beaches. Not cheap!

Tumtr · 11/02/2025 22:30

That’s great thank you

Orangebadger · 11/02/2025 22:31

Love Sardinia!

strawberryblue · 11/02/2025 22:32

I went last year group of females. Found it friendly and safe. Beaches were absolutely stunning- some pushy venders but on the whole fine. I was really surprised by how pretty it was

strawberryblue · 11/02/2025 22:32

To add/ locals fine and food was good 😊

ExitPursuedByABare · 11/02/2025 22:32

Yes. It’s Italy. Great good. Great people.

Found out where cork comes from.

Went to Cagliari last summer. Loved it. Very friendly.

IdaGlossop · 11/02/2025 22:43

It's stunning. Coastal Smeralda (north east) attracts the super-rich. Poetto beach attracts people living in the capital, Cagliari (south). Many British go to Alghero (north west), which has a Spanish feel. The interior is wild and mountainous. Oristano (west) has quiet beaches but isn't developed for turismo. The east coast (Arbatax, Tortolì) is very good for beaches and bathing and not developed. The island has itsown language and people talk about 'the continent' when referring to the Italian mainland.

The food is good, as it almost always is in Italy. Lots of fish, fruit, vegetables, pane carasau (thin, crisp bread) and gnocchi sardi (pasta made of wheat flour). Agriturismi offer good value accommodation and local cuisine if you want to avoid hotels and holiday clubs: agriturismo.it.

There was a post only a day ago. Let me find and link it.

@Tumtr You know MN is a Florida and AI type of place! Sardinia is great. Really worth going to. It’s not the cheapest but it has everything you could want. We found it perfectly ok but it’s a fairly chic place to go.

AllFurCoatAndFrillyKnickers · 12/02/2025 00:16

We went in 2015 for 10 days. In that time we didn't see a single Brit. Most tourists were Italian from the mainland.
The food was good but I did find the range of salads/veg sides to be lacking. We had the most amazing lobster and spaghetti.
We stayed in Villasimius near Cagliari.

SnowFrogJelly · 12/02/2025 01:00

It's lovely but very expensive
