People who can’t do simple holidays

smerina · 17/01/2025 11:37

How would you describe someone who only really seems to go on hard to organise holidays? Like we like going to Dubai or Mallorca, nice and easy, one flight and done. Or if we go further afield then we do a package with Tui to Cancun or Dominican, usually AI.

But I have colleagues who seem to go on really whacky or trips that sound like a pain. They’d go to Greece and then get a ferry to some place no one has ever heard of. Or if they went to the Caribbean then they’d pick somewhere that needs two flights and a ferry to get to. Never do AI or something easy and relaxing but self cater and drive around.

Each to their own, OP.

I can't imagine why people go to Dubai on holiday when there are so many wonderful places in the world.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 17/01/2025 12:08

I do think it comes down to “relax” vs “do stuff” and “travel to arrive” vs “enjoy the travel”.

Yes, and it's quite understandable when people work their butts off all year that they might want a holiday with as little hassle in the planning, travel etc as possible. I can totally understand that view, and why other people's ideal experience wouldn't chime exactly with mine and will sometimes be entirely the opposite.

I am just not computing this bizarre attitude some people have that 'different equals bad'.

Why is it snooty to dislike those things?

It's not snooty to dislike these things, but it is very snooty to make it pretty obvious you are looking down your nose at people who do like them. But you know that really.
The OP didn't ask if anyone else shared her taste, yet we have pages and pages of pps telling her they don't.

midgetastic · 17/01/2025 13:27

It is not snooty to dislike AI or single location or beach focussed holidays

It is not snooty to dislike self catering or active holidays

It's just different

But when someone starts on that others are being snooty for liking different things - that's snobbery a " my way is best and right " attitude, a narrow closed mind attitude that is unpleasant

Cluelessbee · 17/01/2025 13:27

Nothing wrong with all inclusive, if it suits you then do it. But many people find it dull. Some people enjoy the planning and organising of a trip (choosing hotels, activities, restaurants, renting a car and planning road trips), which you don't do when you book all inclusive.

So what was she looking for in posting this thread?

SerafinasGoose · 17/01/2025 13:31

For AI, I keep reading 'artificial intelligence'.

Which is actually a great way of planning complex, multi-stop trips provided you prompt it to take in exactly the locations you're most keen to visit!

Oakmoke · 17/01/2025 13:31

They're different holidays, and different people prefer different holidays. They may also choose either when it suits their life stage e.g. easier all inclusive with kids or interests at a certain point in time e.g. bucket list adventure.

ItGhoul · 17/01/2025 13:32

What an odd thing to be even thinking about, let alone posting about. Do you not realise that different people just like different things? Why are you bothered? Why do need a word to describe other people’s holiday choices? I mean, I’d rather die than go camping, for example, but I don’t care if other people like it.

I’ve never been on an AI holiday or a resort type holiday. I like road trips, city breaks, island hopping, remote locations, eating in different restaurants every night, seeing lots of the area I’m staying in, wildlife, history, galleries, quirky accommodation etc. I’m not bothered about hot weather, I don’t sunbathe and I don’t really swim. So the type of holidays you enjoy wouldn’t be right for me.

People are not all the same.

MikeRafone · 17/01/2025 13:32

How would you describe someone who only really seems to go on hard to organise holidays?

Interesting, adventurous, fun, sort of person that goes the extra mile - literally

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 17/01/2025 13:33

DaDaDoDaiDa · 17/01/2025 12:06

For some, the planning his half the fun.

(I am reminded of the Viz top tip - "Since planning a holiday is half the fun, save money and have the same fun by staying at home and planning two holidays")

This is why Viz is truly life enhancing :)

mistymorning12 · 17/01/2025 13:33

We did a "sort of" package in the summer 2 hotels in the Algarve.
Usually we like to travel around a bit, go to different places, stay in a range of hotels and do a mix of relaxing and cultural things.

The whole family were a bit bemused by the summer trip, everyone was English, the food was a bit English and we've agreed to always have proper holidays from now on.

HazelTheDormouse · 17/01/2025 13:33

Some people need rest and recharge their batteries sitting round a pool and beach with a cocktail AI. I’ve done this in the past but it’s not where I am at now.

When I go on holiday now, I can only get a real break if I am somewhere remote, the WIFI won’t always work, it’s at least 3 weeks away and it’s not very touristy. That’s a holiday, but it takes quite extreme forms to get it.

Maybe I’ll like AI again at some point but whilst I’ve still got the legs for it I want to explore places.

midgetastic · 17/01/2025 13:33

She was asking what to call people who don't share her taste and say these people were whacky - in sone way strange , assumes that they wouldn't be having a relaxing holiday , that they wouldn't find their holidays easy

OP was making a lot of critical assumptions about other peoples holiday choices - if you start off being negative about others , then expect them to be negative back

Oakmoke · 17/01/2025 13:34

For example, we have been to Greece several ways: all inclusive Tui pool holiday, sailing around various Ionian islands for 2 weeks with campfire on beach, and fly-ferry-drive in villa self catered. All very different.

denhaag · 17/01/2025 13:34

These days before I join a thread I see whether the OP is contributing.
For many you see a single OP and then they sit back and watch.
I think many are bots or bored people.

Anonymus89 · 17/01/2025 13:35

I think all-inclusive holidays are fantastic, especially for families with very young kids. They’re convenient, easy, and having everything in one place after just one flight is ideal. We’ve had many holidays like that and loved them. However, I also believe there’s so much more to experience in the world beyond AI resort buffets and straightforward destinations. There’s a sense of adventure and excitement in navigating new places, figuring things out, and discovering the unexpected. That said, I understand that not everyone feels streetwise or confident enough to, for example, handle an internal transfer in Asia or Africa, and that’s completely fine. Everyone should travel in a way that feels comfortable for them.

That also doesn’t mean traveling to unconventional destinations requires staying in hostels or tents—you can make it as luxurious as you want. Plenty of countries cater to high-end travel, even in what some might consider “whacky” or less traditional locations on the map. I don’t think people who enjoy this type of holiday need to be labeled or called as anything?? It’s just different type of holiday

For us, exploring unique and off-the-beaten-path destinations is a privilege, and we make sure to teach our daughter to appreciate just how lucky we are to experience the world this way. It’s a chance to show her that travel can be so much more than just a holiday by the pool.

Well your holidays are just plain boring but if that is your bag then go off and enjoy!
And let the rest of us go off and enjoy our adventures 😉

BellissimoGecko · 17/01/2025 13:41

I can't think of anywhere I'd less like to go than Dubai. It doesn't appeal at all.

Everyone is different.

TheBoysAndTheBallet · 17/01/2025 11:44

Those people like travelling. You like holidays.

Nailed it.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 17/01/2025 13:43

Not sure what you are looking for but I like both types of holiday that you describe. The easy all inclusive types to relax and have fun. The more adventures traveling around type to experience new places/culture/history and generally experience more beautiful and interesting places.

For me, both have a place and I like to have a mix.

to be honest I would find people who could only ever do one type a bit boring/ close minded but ultimately doesn’t really affect me (unless it was my husband) so everyone should do what they want. Holidays are expensive so no point doing something you don’t enjoy.

Or mining for fodder to prove everyone here are middle class wankers who would only approve of a holiday trekking in the Andes with llamas while teaching their tri-lingual children how to play pan pipes in the most culturally appropriate style.
