People who can’t do simple holidays

smerina · 17/01/2025 11:37

How would you describe someone who only really seems to go on hard to organise holidays? Like we like going to Dubai or Mallorca, nice and easy, one flight and done. Or if we go further afield then we do a package with Tui to Cancun or Dominican, usually AI.

But I have colleagues who seem to go on really whacky or trips that sound like a pain. They’d go to Greece and then get a ferry to some place no one has ever heard of. Or if they went to the Caribbean then they’d pick somewhere that needs two flights and a ferry to get to. Never do AI or something easy and relaxing but self cater and drive around.

a lot of people have a word for those who like to holiday in Dubai...

Tories? 😂

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 17/01/2025 13:08

Different people like different things...

Food, clothes, music, holidays

You do you

Oh come on OP, you must have known the snooty replies you were going to get to your post!
PPs falling over themselves to say they hate AI, hate package holidays - you knew that was coming.

This this this

LBFseBrom · 17/01/2025 13:09

I think it's up to them, different strokes for different folks. Most people are content with how you do holidays, I would be but what others choose to do is entirely up to them. I'm pleased if they enjoy themselves in that way but can't say I am that interested, really. I obviously show polite interest. I sometimes wonder, if they have young children, how the kids feel about the extensive travelling but don't spend too long pondering. Like adults, kids vary. I have only one child, adult, who travels all over the world for work but loves being back at home best of all and prefers simple holidays without hassle.

wizzywig · 17/01/2025 13:09

Yeah I like complicated holidays. I hate the thought of being in 1 place for 7-14 days . I mean what happens if you get bored?

brunettemic · 17/01/2025 13:10

No idea what the word is but is there also one for people who can’t accept other people like to do things differently to them?

Narrow minded

@Lobstercrisps Ahh okay. I've been to turkey, was a fan myself as I was assaulted as a young teen ! My brother went to kos, with his mate probably on the sort of holiday you went on lol.

We do packages but go self catering or bed and breakfast, only one place had loads of young couples who got a bit rowdy. Not all packages are like that, that's my worst nightmare.

Interesting first post OP. This is surely a - very obvious - wind up.

Yes. And you just know that the OP isn't coming back.

I'm surprised they've even bothered putting it in the holiday topic rather than AIBU.

Was NOT* a fan that clearly should've said !

I assumed all inclusive was for people with picky children who wanted to same safe foods to eat.

No judgement, we’ve all had to deal with that at some point as parents and the path of least resistance is a smart one on a holiday. I had a DC who only at a particular brand of cereal and had to pack boxes of it whenever we travelled.

I would rather never holiday than go to a hellscape like Dubai. Oodles of judgement for that. Human rights abuses and rampant capitalism put a damper on any advantages of sunny weather.

A friend of mine who was a backpacker type decided on her first AI in Spain because she now had a toddler and thought it would be an easy, low-stress way of getting her used to heat and unfamiliar surroundings. Her previously Zen toddler decided she was afraid of water, and went absolutely hysterical whenever she saw the sea or the pool, even in the distance, and also went crazy at the sensation of sand anywhere near her skin, so they spent most of their holiday inside a hotel room, as there wasn't a whole lot to do otherwise if you didn't want to hit the bars.

BarnacleBeasley · 17/01/2025 11:45

Childfree? I have only wanted to do AI package holidays since having children because it's easy. When they're old enough to manage more days out etc. we can stop.

That was my first thought too! We were all new locations, multi centre trips until DC and now it's AI in Menorca. Looking forward to getting back out there in time.

Holidays are leisure, there doesn't need to be value attached to the type of holidays people choose.

PigInAHouse · 17/01/2025 13:15

I think AI would be the worst for picky toddlers! We go self catering with our autistic child with a very limited diet so that we can make sure we’ve got the foods he’ll eat.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 17/01/2025 13:16

@smerina LOL you sounds so jealous! 😆 What business is it of yours how people 'do' their holidays. Get a life! Grin

BarbaraHoward · 17/01/2025 13:19

I understand why people might not like AI but I don't understand the judgement about packages. Years ago I priced up a holiday to Sorrento, then priced it through Tui (or whatever they were called then). The package was much cheaper and included the transfers. Plus then we had access to their tours which were excellent. We would have had a much worse holiday if we'd booked ourselves.

We also did a 2.5 week trip around Vietnam, and that was technically a package. A tailored package, but a package nonetheless.

midgetastic · 17/01/2025 13:19

Someone going to Greece and then getting a ferry to an island you haven't heard of ... I'd call that ordinary , normal , having fun and exploring

It isn't a case of describing them as anything, OP, but of recognising that people are different and want different things from their precious leisure time. If pressed, I'd probably say 'adventurous'.

I never do AI or something easy or 'relaxing'. I don't knock it for those who do like it. It just isn't for me. What I really enjoy when I go overseas is taking in as much of a country as possible, spending time out in nature and with wildlife, or soaking up the scenery, history and culture. The planning is half the fun. In the medium-term future I have road trips planned for Australia, the Yellowstone and Glacier national parks, a Mississipi river cruise (if affordable), and a Christmastime stay in NYC with a transatlantic voyage home on the QM2. One of my happiest holidays was a trek right up from the bottom to the top of I95, taking in the whole of the US coast and eventually staying on a beautiful Maine island, taking in the national parks and hiking in the woods.

Last year was a few days in Center Parcs, going on to Edinburgh and later Bamburgh. This year it will likely be the northern Scottish Isles. Year after that it will be Yellowstone. I'd rather have the holiday experience I really wanted every 2-3 years and more modest options in the interim, than an AI holiday overseas every year.

I've never liked sitting around on sun loungers or on beaches. By the second day I'd be going spare. And some people do prefer being off the beaten track - I have a book with precisely that title - as some of the major tourist areas are overrun these days.

Simply personal preference.

mitogoshigg · 17/01/2025 13:20

I do both, I'll chill out in an ai sometimes but I like to see interesting things and visit unusual places, I'm going for 3 weeks later in the year on a road trip

SerafinasGoose · 17/01/2025 13:21

Likely so, but it's not a waste of a thread. I'm really enjoying reading about what people like to do.

pinkgrevillea · 17/01/2025 13:22

If you go to Greece then it's not unheard of to have a few nights in a place like Kos and then head to a smaller island. I could never do AI or package holidays - I want to explore, find the places that are tucked away. I like self catering as you can shop at markets etc or eat out and I like to drive.... not sure why that's 'not simple' - it's a holiday, you're eating and seeing stuff?

mitogoshigg · 17/01/2025 13:22

My dream trip is overland to Australia by motorbike ... can't do that ai!

Why is it snooty to dislike those things?

MangshorJhol · 17/01/2025 13:24

Even with kids, sitting in a hotel on an artificial beach in Dubai is my idea of utter hell. But I can see why it appeals to some. We like going hiking in the US, we go to the various national parks, we took our kids to Europe last summer and did a train trip around Europe that lasted three weeks (and the kids are pestering us to do it again). We have done some holidays in South America that have combined hiking, beach time and seeing historical sites. Our next big holiday is to Sri Lanka, and we're going to do the beaches, go to the centre of the country and do the historical bits and then go to Yala National Park. Our kids are 13 and 8 but we've been travelling with them since they were young with the exception of COVID. And even then once restrictions were lifted, we would drive to various national parks and go hiking to get out and get some fresh air.

Never really used a travel agent, we do the booking ourselves. Usually DH books the flights/trains and the accommodation. I do the day to day trip planning.

godmum56 · 17/01/2025 13:24

I'd call them "people"

MangshorJhol · 17/01/2025 13:26

@Katypp I mean AI doesn't suit us- we like eating out, and like venturing out of the hotel. I can totally see why AI suits many people, esp with young families. Or package holidays. My parents have done package holidays. I'm not snooty about it, it's just not my cup of tea!
