Has anyone travelled with just an under seat bag?

I am just about to book a five solo trip to a hot country and am debating whether to save £90 and not take a suitcase. Has anyone travelled with EasyJet or Tui with only a bag that will fit under the seat? I’m not sure if I’m crazy to consider it.

I do if I'm going for a night or two but not any longer. I like clothes and want to take a selection.

I only ever travel with a small rucksack that fits under seats - even for 2 weeks travelling around Central America

ApolloandDaphne · 12/01/2025 17:41

Not a chance i could do that. I am old and fat. My underwear alone would take up the whole underseat bag. I am hold or nothing.

YourNimbleOchrePoster · 12/01/2025 17:41

I think I’ll do a practice pack and see how much I can fit in a small bag. I’m going to do a trip to some ruins, a boat trip and a few spa sessions.

My daughter does this but she's tiny and so are her clothes! 5 g-strings, five little vests, a bikini and a couple of skirts are fine for her. Her boyfriend though is a big lad and even his pants take up more space than her tops!

Saschka · 12/01/2025 17:45

We never travel with a suitcase! Ski trips aside, and even then it is one suitcase between three of us.

You can fit a lot in an under-seat bag. I usually plan for a trip to a launderette if we’re going for more than 3-4 days and not in an Airbnb, but for 5 days and only one person you should manage.

Twinklybeam · 12/01/2025 17:51

We did it this summer for a week in Dubrovnik - each member of the family had an easyJet approved under seat backpack (bought from Amazon). We had no problem fitting everything in except shoes - my husband and son both have size 13 feet - but they managed to carry an extra pair on inside a duty free plastic bag.

suki1964 · 12/01/2025 17:52

I only travel with an unseat bag now. We can get flights real cheap and they end up being double taking even a cabin bag now

Roll everything and travel in your heaviest clothes and shoes

OnceMoreWithAttitude · 12/01/2025 17:53

Will towels be provided at your accommodation?

I could easily do this without packing towels.

Wear your bulkiest clothing and shoes, and layers.

Also… closer to the flight you might be able to add speedy boarding / priority boarding, which comes with a cabin bag allowance, and when I did it, cheaper than booking the cabin bag in the first place. (Easy Jet)

TheFlyingHorse · 12/01/2025 17:53

DH and I have just booked a small underseat bag each for a five day trip to Morocco next month. I'm determined to make it work and will wear my bulkiest clothes to travel in.

I'm currently de cluttering my wardrobe pretty ruthlessly which is making me think about what clothes I really need and which are unnecessary. I'm hoping to apply the same principles to packing 🙂

Yes! We do it with the kids! If it can’t fit in a rucksack you can’t take it 😂

never been brave enough to do it for longer than a week, but a week is grand…

Silverstar2 · 12/01/2025 17:55

If you fly BA you get quite a generous hand luggage allowance plus a handbag/laptop sized bag too. I managed three nights to a very very cold destination (think -6....) with a medical condition that requires lots of stuff.

MaxMaxy · 12/01/2025 17:56

We did for a 3 night city break on Ryanair with an underneath bag was just about ok. Packed the minimum amount.

FrenchandSaunders · 12/01/2025 17:57

Yep we’ve done 5 nights in a hot country and 3 in a colder one with hand luggage … great rucksack on Amazon, amazing how much can fit into it. I’ll try and do a link.

minipie · 12/01/2025 17:59

Yes but only for a long weekend in a warm city. So only needed to pack lightweight/small clothes and flat sandals (wore the bulky walking sandals). Actually I had spare space.

A compression packing cube helps a lot, but the good ones cost a fair bit so not worth buying for one trip.

RobinHood19 · 12/01/2025 18:06

I can do 4-5 days in cold weather or 7 in hot weather with an underseat backpack. Mine is slightly over the allowed dimensions but it’s always made it through, and I’ll often hold my water bottle in my hand and have a very small purse on my shoulder too. Doable, if you feel sneaky 😂

Needamagicfairy · 12/01/2025 18:17

We did for 5 days in good weather, no spare shoes and no need for towels

YourNimbleOchrePoster · 12/01/2025 18:22

Doable, if you feel sneaky 😂

My DH has suggested a few sneaky ideas, he said to use all my hair scrunchies on my bun and have the worlds biggest bun and maybe actually wear a couple of outfits too!

My family have done this a couple of times for a weeks holiday. They are teens though so we didn’t need any baby equipment or toys.It makes it so much easier at the airport and removes the stress of lost baggage. We just hand or machine wash a few bits midweek.
When we go away in the uk I always end up with clothes I don’t wear or pack extra shoes just in case. It really is simpler to pack light.

Cally62 · 12/01/2025 18:31

OMG… I need to know that this is possible.
My DD is moving to Abu Dhabi soon and I can get a return flight from the UK for £250. It’s an extra £300 for a 10kg bag. 😱

defineme · 12/01/2025 18:32

Yes, 5 days in Mallorca is the longest I've done. Wore trainers and summer jacket to travel, packed flip flops. I have tiny travel straighteners. Compression cubes help. I have a large micro towel that folds into a little square for the beach. My summer dresses fold up to nothing. Small lightweight handbag that fits inside rucksack, ryanair have made me put it in my bag a couple of times. It was absolutely fine

KevinAndTracy · 12/01/2025 18:35

Yes, I do it when I go for 4/5 nights in Mallorca

Its amazing how much you can squeeze in a soft tote or rucksack!

A duty free carrier bag is an option for sneaking a few extra bits on board if you have one in good condition 😉

MajorCarolDanvers · 12/01/2025 18:35

I do it regularly for one night only.

for 2 - 5 nights I can manage with a small suitcase that goes in an overhead locker. But no less.

Maybe if she's living there for a while you can buy a few extra clothes and a pair of shoes when you're there and leave them with her?
