Has anyone travelled with just an under seat bag?

I am just about to book a five solo trip to a hot country and am debating whether to save £90 and not take a suitcase. Has anyone travelled with EasyJet or Tui with only a bag that will fit under the seat? I’m not sure if I’m crazy to consider it.

Yes , doing it this weekend for 3 nights in Lanzarote . My bag was packed very tight and I did buy something at the airport and put a few of my own things in that bag that could have been bought at the airport , it was never questioned

I've done 3 nights 4 days.
But how about this:

Yes!

There's a strategy you can use.

Most still allow another handbag/bum bag so check that.

Wear your bikini. Wear as many layers of clothes to go on the plane you can move in. Then take them off in the planes loo.

Wear combats & stuff the pockets with stuff.

You can usually carry in extra books/newspapers/magazines not in your bag. Same with a camera round your neck. Wear all your jewellery. Put your phone in a sleeve on your arm or round your neck.

Good luck!

Buy some compression bags or at least packing cubes. These help.

We've done it for up to 4-5 days.

Xiaoxiong · 12/01/2025 18:41

Since the kids were old enough to carry a rucksack that's all we do. Packing cubes are a godsend and really make it doable. You wear your biggest things eg trainers, coat, jeans, jumper.

Most still allow another handbag/bum bag so check that.

I have seen Easy Jet at Gatwick and EJ or a.n.other airline (can’t remember) refuse this.

And force people to stuff even small passport holder type bags into the one allowed bag.

Bring a shopping bag and put things in that and buy something from duty free. You're allowed to bring a shopping bag onboard.

Yes done a week in two hot countries with just hand luggage. But I was alot skinnier back then 😂.
I took a towel, 2 bikinis, 2 pairs flip flops, 2 or 3 dresses, 1 pair shorts and maybe 2 vests? A solid shampoo, mini toiletries, then i bought a full size deodorant in the country. I think i ended up leaving the towel there as I'd bought a few things and didn't have enough room for it coming home.

Compression packing cubes are a game changer! I can do a full week (with a couple of bit and bobs in pockets). If you’re going for longer than a week, there’s always options to do laundry.

JimHalpertsWife · 12/01/2025 18:56

We did a week away as a family of 4 and each only hand under seat bags. We got the Decathlon ones.

Mykittensmittens · 12/01/2025 18:56

Depends which airport but, for example, you can do this at Manchester… carry no toiletries and do a click and collect order for boots post security.
you can then pick up a small bag containing anything you need and don’t think you can instantly/easily get at destination.

notacooldad · 12/01/2025 18:57

I travel up to two weeks with a 35litre rucksack that goes under the seat.
I've been doing that for years.
I use a vacuum bag to put my clothes in. You dont need a vacuum cleaner as some people think to use.

babbi · 12/01/2025 19:01

very easy ., I never take anything larger than a ruck sack , week in the sun , city breaks , fortnight in LA etc .
Take some laundry sheets and you can wash some clothes .
no waiting for bags at the carousel either !

username2851 · 12/01/2025 19:10

Yes if only a weekend.

The ones i know who do travel light for weeks smell like they're homeless I'm afraid

JanuaryJaguar · 12/01/2025 19:10

Do use a rucksack bag though as this is much less likely to be checked at the desk than those small wheeled suitcases.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 12/01/2025 19:18

I've done it with a Le Pliage bag. Roll everything!

I take minimal toiletries and cosmetics and I don't take shampoo, conditioner or shower gel as I expect this to be supplied by the hotel. Also I never take extra jewellery on trips like this.

I wear a small crossbody bag under my coat or jacket although if necessary it will go in the top of the bag if I undo the zip, at least until I'm on the plane.

CornishDew · 12/01/2025 19:20

I do it every trip. It makes travel so much simpler having less

Unescorted · 12/01/2025 19:25

Yes... If I am struggling to get everything in I buy toiletries and a towel when I get there.

m00rfarm · 12/01/2025 19:26

Depends on who you are flying with. Some airlines only give you 10kg and others as much as you can carry,

Ursulla · 12/01/2025 19:27

Not a fucking chance. Hand luggage, yes, under seat bag no, that's a step too far. Now that the shit airlines cost as much as (or more than) BA once you add on hand luggage, I just fly BA. Plus, it's nicer, the flights are at better times and you get points. They're always having some kind of deal or other - I went to Italy for £90 return back in October, was brilliant.

mitogoshigg · 12/01/2025 19:28

TUI usually include a 56cm bag, check

TeamGeriatric · 12/01/2025 19:28

I did it a lot when we didn't have any kids, not at all recently though, we do though stick to one checked bag for everyone for all European trips. We recently went to Vienna and the checked bag weighed 11kg for 4 people, and some of that came back unworn, but you just never know if someone is going to spill hot chocolate down their jumper on Day 1. We had a rucksack with teddy bears and wooly hats and a couple of books, and another full of iPads, chargers and other electronic equipment, and snacks. We could probably have got in all into 4 rucksacks if I'd really tried. It's just a case of persuading the kids to carry their own bag around and particularly onto the plane.

Maddy70 · 12/01/2025 19:31

That's all I ever take

partygarden · 12/01/2025 19:32

I used to in my twenties... went for two weeks to the rockies in Canada, took a tiny carry on bag. Let's just say, I regretted my decision on that holiday! It was the stark deviations in temperatures I didn't really bargain for, within a day it would regularly go from freezing to boiling and back again.

Have done plenty of EU holidays tho with carry on, no problems.

I've recently booked our summer holiday and flights are with Ryanair - I didn't opt for the check in luggage option (£70+ pp!), so me, dh and two kids are going to have to only bring the necessities! I feel quite optimistic we'll be ok tho

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 12/01/2025 19:35

The underseat bag size for easyJet is pretty generous (compared to Ryanair’s which is tiny) so possibly yes if going somewhere hot, as summer stuff folds up pretty small. Often if we’re relying on underseat bags for easyJet I book just one regular cabin size bag though (not one each, between us) so it’s easier to take extra trainers/shoes etc.
