Has anyone travelled with just an under seat bag?

I am just about to book a five solo trip to a hot country and am debating whether to save £90 and not take a suitcase. Has anyone travelled with EasyJet or Tui with only a bag that will fit under the seat? I’m not sure if I’m crazy to consider it.

Oh and thank you for the link.

Maybe if she's living there for a while you can buy a few extra clothes and a pair of shoes when you're there and leave them with her?

Order a set of clothes from Amazon delivered to her ?

Destiny123 · 12/01/2025 20:59

Yea easily. Done a 7d hol before

MiseryIn · 12/01/2025 21:01

Yes I have an EasyJet hard case that's the right size for under seat. You get a lot in there and just wear what you can't fit in!
I've done 5 nights with it. That's about as much as I could I think.

I'm doing a week in Cuba with just cabin luggage. I mean - what do you need?

Helenloveslee4eva · 12/01/2025 21:03

Just done a week in Malta with Ryanair under seat bag only.
washed one load of clothes.
16 degrees.

4x undies and socks 3x wool t shirts. 1 spare trousers ( wished I’d brought shorts instead !) . The secret emergency clothes of pjs that have black leggings style trousers and a flowery top .

secret bring jml vac pack thing - reduces what looks like a pack full of clothes to something the thickness of a decent hardback book and the size of the back of the pack if you are careful.

I even fitted my over the ear noise cancelling headphones in this time as I didn’t take spare shoes just my trainers.

wore long sleeved top ( washed and wore in return with a t shirt under as was freezing 🤣. Fleece zip hoody , soft shell jacket and waterproof . Oh and pashmina scarf . Needed alL if the layers in return 🤣

remember no one cares how much stuff you have till you go to the gate. I have a small back pack for day pack use ( decathlon it’s sbout 6cmx4cm when packed up and pretty flat ) and a nylon shopping bag that packs to nothing. Both v useful on holiday but lob all the coats in at the airport till you are called to the gate. ( and also remember the airport bag trick for your water and sandwiches ).

I also carry a Uniqlo banana bag under my coat with my valuables in. I make sure I can accommodate this in my luggage if I had to.

this is my backpack with a 500 ml water bottle on the side for scale.

Only a small caveat - Malta at new year , a balmy 16-17. I would have worn shorts if I’d taken any.

my usual “ well you can buy anything you need pretty cheap in the market if you aren’t too picky “ technique didn’t work , cos the malese were freezing and the market was stocked with puffer coats thermals and umbrellas 🤣🤣

floppybit · 12/01/2025 21:14

I do a week long holiday to somewhere hot with only carry on luggage no problem. I hate putting stuff in the hold.

Curlyshabtree · 12/01/2025 21:15

Yes, regularly. If a cold destination wear layers on the flight . If a hot one I wash out my smalls/ T shirts while there.
Compression cubes are good too.

Ohsunshine · 12/01/2025 21:15

Yes but I was 20 and all I needed was a bikini, bit of make up and some tiny shorts/vest top 😂. Took one pair of sandals that I wore everywhere. No way could I do it now 😂

Ohgodthisishard · 12/01/2025 23:11

Useful!

Snackpocket · 18/01/2025 10:46

We’ve just booked easyJet flights for a week in Spain in June and just gone for underseat bags. I’ve always had a small case before so it’ll be a challenge but I think it’s doable. The apartment we are staying in has a washing machine, and it’s a chill out type holiday so for day time it’ll be a bikini and something to throw on top. We’ll just buy sun cream, shower gel, shampoo etc when we get there.

I always overpack and take far too much stuff so I’m almost looking forward to planning more carefully and not doing that this time!

Don’t forget you can take a cabin suitcase AND a separate item of hand luggage like a rucksack.

Only with some airlines. Budget airlines it is one underseat bag only, with a payment option for cabin sized suitcases.

Oops sorry, I was thinking of tui as that was mentioned.

For easyJet or Ryanair (I think the OP was looking at EasyJet for one option and trying to work out if she could manage with the free allowance only), you can only do this if you pay extra. For both of those airlines, only the underseat bag is free (no separate handbag or backpack allowed) without any add ons, and the dimensions of the Ryanair underseat bag is much smaller than easyJet allow.

Plastictrees · 18/01/2025 11:02

I’ve done this many times for long weekend trips, 5 nights is probably my limit. I’ve only ever done this when going to hot countries as summer clothes are of course much easier to pack as they take up less space. I’ve also used a bag that could have been from duty free for any additional bits too, as this tends to be allowed on flights in addition to the cabin bag.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 18/01/2025 11:02

Sorry, cross posted @usernamesaretoohardtothinkof I posted before I saw your most recent post.

Me and my work mate are planning to do this in September. Only going for 3 nights(not somewhere hot either), we think we will be fine. I'll take a mini shampoo and toothpaste but just use hotel soap/shower gel. Otherwise just clothes and phone charger. I don't wear make up/beauty products etc most of the time anyway. Def possible for a few nights.

MaybeNotBob · 18/01/2025 13:24

Easily doable. Get a good bag, we've got these, and roll your clothes. It should be easy for a hot country as you only need light clothes.

We very comfortably did 4 nights in a cold country before Christmas which meant many more and bulkier clothes, but as long as you don't take more than you need (I always add a spare T-shirt and underwear) you shouldn't have a problem.

I do like the idea of those packable neck pillows mentioned upthread though - I may have to think about getting one of those!

We did 10 days in Morocco with only rucksack under the seat. We wore a jumper and held a jacket onto the flight and took them off as soon as we boarded. A small handbag was stuffed down the arm of my jacket.

Britneyfan · 18/01/2025 13:49

I really do not know how people are managing this. Maybe for a long weekend but I honestly don’t know how people can do this for any longer. I’m amazed people can do this. We are talking about the teeny tiny dimension size bag allowed as free by Ryanair or Easyjet right? Where you can’t even have an extra handbag?

I used to manage just fine all the time for a week’s holiday or maybe 10 days especially in summer temperatures, with the old cabin size bags but not these newer ones. Although at this point in my life (I am middle aged) I also really cannot bear to have to wear all my heaviest clothes and feel uncomfortable while going through the airport, it’s stressful enough. I want to be able to pack away my coat if I don’t feel like wearing it. I also don’t want to have to struggle to do up the zip on the suitcase as it hurts my hands. And don’t want to be stressed out trying to repack everything quickly if they decide they want to go through my bag at security… To be honest even just packing at h e beginning and end of the holiday is a massive stress to me if I can’t easily do up the bag and have no extra space - what if I buy something on holiday?

Please keep posting links for the bags people are using as underseat bags though, maybe I just need a better bag?!

MaybeNotBob · 18/01/2025 14:06

There is a big difference in the sizes allowed by Easyjet and Ryanair. It's not going to be possible on Ryanair, but Easyjet can work if you're careful.
