Best European City break?

summerlovingvibes · 14/12/2024 19:08

What are your favourite European cities for a 3-4 day break? 2 adults (female cousins) just wanting a short break to somewhere a bit different. Have been to Paris / Pisa / Rome / Faro / Lisbon / Split.

I love Madrid. Also Budapest. Belfast was nice too. Or Amsterdam, Barcelona, or Krakow.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 14/12/2024 19:27

Seville or Berlin for me. Seville for the food and Berlin for the history.

What do you like to do? If museums are your thing, Berlin, Madrid and Brussels are amazing. (obviously other things to see/do also) Day trip to Bruge via train from Brussels. Day trip to Toledo from Madrid- amazing Basilica there.

Budapest has several hot spring, bath places if you are into those.

Prague and visit via train to the Sedlec ossuary or Cesky Krumlov

Berlin, Barcelona. I found Madrid boring

Stockholm, Tallinn, Riga, Budapest, Prague or Hamburg.

Palma (Majorca is not just about the beaches)

Bergamo — Ryanair's hub outside Milan, where you could also go for a day, but Bergamo itself is gorgeous.

Padova — a wonderful old university town and it's just 40 minutes and €5 to Venice.

I have visited every EU capital city (and a Lot of other non capitals and non EU capitals)

Hard to pick just one.

Love: Vienna, Rome, Tallinn, Lisbon, Athens

Avoid: Bucharest, Bratislava, Paris

Hidden gems (not so well visited): Vilnius, Madrid (everyone goes to Barcelona!), Warsaw, Helsinki

Gdansk in Poland. Absolutely beautiful city, perfect for a weekend break.

avignon1234 · 15/12/2024 00:17

No. 1 city is Budapest (thermal pools, brilliant architecture, great public transport, pinball museum, great nightlife of all types, been 4 times)
Seville (just great, warm, beautiful city, alcazar, airport miles out, been once)
Prague (like bits of it, but not all of it, been 3 times)
Krakow (beautiful, cheap, great nightlife, great public transport, salt mines, been 4 times, not everyone's choice, but Auschwitz is not far away, defo 4 days worth of stuff to do)
I would also consider Warsaw (not Modlin airport it is over an hour away, been twice and it is has plenty to offer) Riga is nice enough but not sure about 3-4 days it is not that big, nor is Vilnius (although I personally love Vilnius), Porto is pretty but not a 4 day place unless you are going in summer and can get to the beaches.
There is something about the Milan to Venice route (easily done by train, cheaply, and they are regular) that is good. You get Milan (not for everyone, enjoyed it more on second visit than first, cemetery a must, then Bergamo (old town on the hill is gorgeous, area around the train station, not so much) then Lake Garda, then Padova (an acquired taste, but a bit of a hidden gem, esp, if you have a side trip to completely relax in Abano Terme's spa hotels) then onto Venice (another marmitey place, and expensive, but somewhere I have been that is "not like any other place" and for that it gets a vote. Good thing is you can sometimes fly into A and out of B.
Hope this helps, have a lovely time choosing and going x

Ihatemondays1962 · 15/12/2024 00:45

Krakow and Copenhagen are both great
Nice is also a good location for the south of france - monaco, antibes, cannes etc are all accessible from there.

InSpainTheRain · 15/12/2024 00:55

We loved Copenhagen and Rekjavik this year. Loads to do, lots of walking and great food.
