Best European City break?

summerlovingvibes · 14/12/2024 19:08

What are your favourite European cities for a 3-4 day break? 2 adults (female cousins) just wanting a short break to somewhere a bit different. Have been to Paris / Pisa / Rome / Faro / Lisbon / Split.

If you’re into art, Madrid for the Prado or Amsterdam for the Rijksmuseum or Florence for the Uffizi.

For a beautiful city, safe-feeling, smart cafe culture, Vienna.

For interesting recent history, Berlin.

Has anyone said Barcelona yet? For wacky but beautiful Gaudi architecture.

Just got back from our second trip to Tromso - go in the summer and you have the midnight sun and the most wonderful scenery, fjords and husky puppies! Go in the winter and you have the polar night, northern lights, huskies, reindeer, whales, cable cars to top of mountain, skiing, snowmobiles, ice sculptures, and wonderful food and people - fell totally in love with the place and country - wish I could afford to live there!

Turin,
Hamburg (although it's literally Baltic), Ljubljana.

MotherOfRatios · 15/12/2024 01:22

I've done a fair few this year
Seville was my summer holiday in July and I loved it

But other than that I've loved Berlin and Vienna

I have visited every EU capital city (and a Lot of other non capitals and non EU capitals)

Hard to pick just one.

Love: Vienna, Rome, Tallinn, Lisbon, Athens

Avoid: Bucharest, Bratislava, Paris

Hidden gems (not so well visited): Vilnius, Madrid (everyone goes to Barcelona!), Warsaw, Helsinki

What’s wrong with Bratislava, if you don’t mind me asking?!

Berlin, Barcelona. I found Madrid boring

We didn't!

wigsonthegreenandhatsforthelifting · 15/12/2024 02:04

Paris is up there in my favourites! I can never get enough of Paris!!

wigsonthegreenandhatsforthelifting · 15/12/2024 02:07

Valencia has been my favourite in recent times though I've also been to Rome and Paris in the last year, and all of them are amazing!

Eeeeeeeeeekohno · 15/12/2024 02:17

Can't believe noone has said Warsaw yet. Brilliant galleries, beautiful parks, incredible food, an amazing spa on the top floor of the Intercontinental... Safe, cheap, friendly. Probably the best city break I can imagine and I used to be a travel journalist so have been on a few.

There's endless choices. I find it helps to narrow it down by using airlines cheap fare finders to identify the reasonably priced and timed flights from your local airport. Also consider your budget and the temperature at the destination when you want to go.

No point deciding you want to go to Oslo in January if you're on a tight budget, hate cold weather and the flights are £400 pp. Or Seville in July if you hate hot weather and need to drive 3 hours to an airport that flies there.

SchoolDilemma17 · 15/12/2024 06:22

Barcelona/Amsterdam/Prague

mistification · 15/12/2024 06:52

Seville, Malaga and Porto have been favourites of mine... I also liked Valletta.

Andoutcomethewolves · 15/12/2024 07:07

Berlin, Krakow, Prague, Porto, Copenhagen, Valletta, Valencia, Belfast. I prefer Utrecht to Amsterdam but I'm not sure how easily accessible it'd be for a short break - I used to live there so it was a bit easier. Those are some of my favourites but there are so many options! I think the only city break I really didn't enjoy was Paris 😬

Gdansk in Poland. Absolutely beautiful city, perfect for a weekend break.

Oh, I forgot Gdansk! Amazing place 😍

OldTinHat · 15/12/2024 07:10

Reykjavik.

This is good advice, hadn't considered the flights. Only really want to fly from STN or LTN

I loved Salzburg. Lots to do. They have boats that waltz on the river to music.

Yes ìm not a fan of Madrid tbh

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 15/12/2024 09:39

Nuremberg is totally underrated IMO. Very pretty, lots museums, and well connected to visit lots of little chocolate box Romantische Straße like Rothenburg ob Der Tauber. And the airport is a really quick U-bahn into town.

Havanananana · 15/12/2024 09:44

@summerlovingvibes Most of the places you've visited are in southern Europe, so for "something a bit different" you could look further north. Luton and Stansted have flights to numerous destinations. In no particular order:

Warsaw, Krakow, Berlin, Hamburg, Lubeck, Copenhagen/Malmo, Gothenburg, Aarhus, Cologne, Bremen, Salzburg, Vienna, Munich ... and don't forget Glasgow and Edinburgh.

TeamGeriatric · 15/12/2024 10:00

I don't think anyone has said Bilbao yet, we combined with San Sebastian for some beach time so it was a slightly longer trip, but Bilbao itself has enough for a long weekend. Guggenheim is a bit of an oddity, the building is fabulous, much of the art inside wasn't really my thing. I don't think you can go wrong wherever you pick.

Twila1 · 15/12/2024 11:42

Ryanair flies from Stansted to Nuremberg. As well as Rothenburg ob der Tauber, nearby Bamberg (UNESCO World Heritage Site) is worth a visit. A day trip to Munich is also feasible. All three places can be reached by train.

CoolShoeshine · 15/12/2024 14:21

Budapest is much favourite for a few nights away, closely followed by Krakow, Barcelona and Salzburg. They all have a great feel and some lovely side streets with plenty to discover, not just famous sights.
