No safe in hotel, where to put passports?

Lazydaisy991 · 11/12/2024 12:22

Booked a hotel, realised it has no safe.
Where is the best place to store passports?
Should I carry them with me?
Put them in a locked suitcase?
Any other ideas?

Does the hotel feel really dodgy or something? Locked suitcase prob best bet if you're really worried

NannyR · 11/12/2024 12:27

You could ask at reception? Maybe they have a safe in the office that guests can use.

Havalona · 11/12/2024 12:30

If you are really worried about them being stolen and the place is well dodgy, then get a ziplock bag and some duct tape. Remove toilet cistern lid. Tape bag to underneath lid. Close lid.

Suitcases can be stolen too.

If place looks ok, leave somewhere hidden but not the cistern 😊

TeamGeriatric · 11/12/2024 12:31

I lock them in my suitcase if there is no safe

User478 · 11/12/2024 12:32

You might be able to open the lining of your suitcase and put them in there?

If you're really worried then maybe look for a different hotel?

adulthoodisajoke · 11/12/2024 12:46

some hotels offer a safe as an extra if they aren't already in the rooms

Lazydaisy991 · 11/12/2024 13:58

I'm not particularly worried about the hotel itself I just didn't think leaving passports hanging around was a good idea

Ask at reception if you are worried. some places are safe enough that you can leave your passport and even money around - Japan for example.

thedevilinablackdress · 11/12/2024 14:05

Depending on where you are it might be a good idea to carry on you. For example, in Spain you are required to have ID on you at all times.

JumpstartMondays · 11/12/2024 14:07

I'd just take them with me.

Got a money belt?

mitogoshigg · 11/12/2024 14:20

I leave them in my suitcase, I've never used a hotel safe in my life. Do check whether you are meant to carry them with you, it necessary in some countries

JFDIYOLO · 11/12/2024 14:35

Get a light purse on a string and wear round neck under clothes.

If there are two of you, take turns to swim.

ClarityClankrantt · 11/12/2024 14:37

Behind a picture if there is one in the hotel room.

Do people actually do this? I've always just left them in my suitcase 🤷🏼‍♀️

purplecorkheart · 11/12/2024 15:01

Ask at reception. So hotels have safes that you can lease or others have a safe at reception that they will store them in for you.

DappledThings · 11/12/2024 15:03

I sometimes use a safe if there is one. Otherwise I just leave in suitcase and don't give it another thought.

DitheringBlidiot · 11/12/2024 15:04

I just leave mine in my suitcase. If it felt sketchy I'd rather take it with me than leave it but I've never been in that situation tbh.

What a relaxing time at the beach for all involved 🤣

If you're really worried, try a bank or somewhere that has safety deposit boxes. Not sure how much they cost mind you. Always kept my millions and gold bullion under the bed...! 😁

2024onwardsandup · 11/12/2024 15:15

What country is it? Must admit I’m super slack now with my passport when I travel in Europe

Lazydaisy991 · 11/12/2024 15:17

Think I'll just leave it in my suitcase, I'd definitely lose it if I carried it with me

AttilaTheMeerkat · 11/12/2024 18:20

If the hotel reception has safety deposit boxes use these. They will have no liability if your passport goes missing from your suitcase.

Summervibes24 · 11/12/2024 18:44

I have hidden mine in pillowcases before - obvs need to put do not disturb sign on the door as otherwise they could go to laundry...!

Smashingwatermelons · 11/12/2024 18:52

I’ve never used a hotel room safe. And I generally leave stuff in my room without hiding it purposefully. I probably should do better - but I’ve never had a problem so that might be reassuring

Which country are you in? As some others have mentioned, in some countries you are legally required to carry your passport with you at all times anyway. Japan is one of them but I’m also aware of Thailand and Turkey having the same rule. I think maybe Greece too.
