Why? Any photos?

I like all of Suffolk. It's so pretty.

That’s not really a “U.K. city” though!

Lallydallydune · 03/12/2024 11:11

I think Newcastle is the only big city in the UK that I haven't been to yet.

What's it like?

Yeah I really didn't like Edinburgh either!

A cold, grey feeling about the place.

That's exactly how I felt about it! I couldn't wait to leave.

I actually really preferred Glasgow. It's not especially pretty but I felt much happier there!

Well I'll choose Ipswich in Suffolk then.

That's a city in Suffolk. It's nice. I like it.

Ggmores · 03/12/2024 11:16

London, I can’t think of another city that comes close - London has everything.

I don’t understand the love for Edinburgh myself, I found it grey and dull.

SabrinaThwaite · 03/12/2024 11:19

Worcester, Durham, Wells and Chichester are all pretty. Edinburgh has its moments but it can be grey and miserable on a wet day (especially if the wind is coming in from the east).

I’ve not been to St Davids, it’s the smallest UK city so I’d hope too small to have grotty bits.

I wanted to give a shout-out to Leeds. I don't know about the city as a whole, but I visited the centre a year or so ago and there were some lovely buildings there. Oh, and Bristol has some lovely bits too, and feels so alive.
Basically I love ALL the cities. They all have little jewels inside them.

Edited

Leeds, like Manchester is a brilliant city for days and nights out with great restaurants, people, history, student life, but of course neither would ever be described as beautiful, maybe fun and fabulous? All the obvious tourist cities mentioned on here have beautiful parts, that shine on a lovely weather day, but IMHO no UK city is beautiful all over in any way whatsoever, quite the opposite these days.

whatstrue · 03/12/2024 11:26

Love all these places! Edinburgh, York, Oxford, Cambridge, Bath!

Winchester Cathedral Close and water meadows area is stunning.

Wells is on my list to see!

London has to be broken down into areas / villages as it's too vast! In no particular order:

Hampstead Village - walk to the Heath stunning
Mayfair Mount street area
Primrose Hill
Nooks and crannies around Westminster / Great Peter Street
St James Park
Greenwich Naval College / riverside area
St Paul's area & view from millennium bridge
Parliament Hill
The city skyline from jubilee bridges at sunset
Richmond riverside and park
Chiswick riverside
Notting Hill pastel houses
Wapping
Little Venice
The Guildhall in the City of London

And for the person asking about more modern architecture, I recommend wandering around the Barbican complex (an incredible example of a Brutalist vision of community living) complete with the highwalk weaving in and out of high rise glass skyscrapers, the ancient Roman city wall and the church of St Giles Cripplegate, (survivor of the Blitz and site of a church for over 1000 years). It's beautiful.

I agree! It felt like there was a more joyful for around Glasgow when I was there.

It seemed happier and friendlier.

Manchester isn't a very beautiful city to look at or walk around in my opinion.

Every building looks very industrial. It's good for business and industries. But it's not very pretty to look at.

How do you guys decide where to live. There are so many cities I'd like to live in in the UK, it's hard to choose!

I don't have any close family so I have no family ties to draw me to one city.

I'd love to live in Glasgow for a year, York for a year, Ipswich for a year.

There are too many great cities to choose from!

Ipswich?
far, far nicer places than Ipswich! 😂

sugarapplelane · 03/12/2024 11:41

Lallydallydune · 03/12/2024 10:50

It's a bit grey and grim though.

Not in the Summer. But actually the grim and greyness of Edinburgh really suits the city and the atmosphere

Crikeyalmighty · 03/12/2024 11:42

@Ophy83 I agree- I live in Bath but have lived in some other lovely places too and I think it depends on 'where' in a place - seasons, weather etc-

Its what the city is near to, as well.

I really like being over that side of the country!

There's a really nice vibe in Suffolk.

I meant all the houses and buildings are grey.

Not the weather!

I've noticed that in some cities in Scotland.

They definitely went for the colour "grey and only grey" when they were building houses and offices.

Ursulla · 03/12/2024 11:54

Glasgow.

Edinburgh is English. But Glasgow is gorgeous. Specifically, standing at the top of Buchanan Street on a sunny day, and looking down it. Can't beat that feeling.

Suffolk countryside is lovely I agree.

I know Ipswich as grew up in Constable Country and always thought it was a bit of a dive.

SingingSands · 03/12/2024 11:56

I love Glasgow, the architecture is outstanding. Look up!

AshCrapp · 03/12/2024 12:00

Another vote for Edinburgh. I love it so much, and miss living there every day.

Crikeyalmighty · 03/12/2024 12:00

@MummyJ12 we live in Bath and yep we have the same issues - exceptJane Austen! Love York too.

Here in Bath it's nicest with few people around at dusk on a nice day , looking up to the hills with the houses twinkling lights set on the hills

I like Glasgow too, and I get the "Edinburgh is English" joke - but it's not really true. Parts of Edinburgh is touristy and studenty, and parts of Edinburgh are very pricey. But most people who actually live there are not from England.

OutbackQueen · 03/12/2024 12:02

My city (St Albans.) It’s not city-size but has city status for some reason.
Built on the Roman town of Verulamium, it has an 11th century cathedral and loads of history, as well as a bustling high street and loads of good places to eat/drink. I live in the town centre and walk everywhere.
The housing stock is great - lots of older properties with character. And it’s only 20 minutes from London on the train (hence very popular with commuter families.)
Ample green space and countryside nearby. I can’t ever see myself moving.

StillCreatingAName · 03/12/2024 12:05

Does @StarryBelle OP want to move to a beautiful city or just go on a city break?

catscatscurrantscurrants · 03/12/2024 12:09

I'd say York, with Bath as a close second. I lived in and around York for over 10 years and it is beautiful in all seasons and weathers.

FromCuddleLand · 03/12/2024 12:27

Very fond memories of living in Canterbury. Lovely little city , shame about some of the outskirts.
