Why? Any photos?

Probably Bath.

Oxford is also pretty nice. Harrogate is absolutely lovely but not a city. York is amazing but not “beautiful” as much as “interesting”. I grew up in Brighton, and much as I love the place, nope. Edinburgh has so many lovely bits but it has some really seedy bits too. Same with London and Glasgow.

The cathedral city of Wells :) small and perfectly formed. Absolutely stunning :)

London

Edinburgh is beautiful in low dreich light, very atmospheric but I don't like it in the sun, the contrast of the dark buildings and the light make me feel gloomy

Winchester...walking through the meadows, is beautiful.

feliciabirthgiver · 03/12/2024 08:15

Absolutely not a city I know but I happen to be in Broadway in the Cotswolds and it's just the prettiest village I have ever been too. It's in all it's Christmas splendour and I'm now ready for the festive season.

AlbertCamusflage · 03/12/2024 08:16

I wanted to give a shout-out to Leeds. I don't know about the city as a whole, but I visited the centre a year or so ago and there were some lovely buildings there. Oh, and Bristol has some lovely bits too, and feels so alive.
Basically I love ALL the cities. They all have little jewels inside them.

Cambridge or Bath

recklessgran · 03/12/2024 08:19

Another vote for York.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 03/12/2024 08:25

Without a doubt London. No contest.

Edinburgh! It has everything!

Well apart from the weather!

GrouchyKiwi · 03/12/2024 08:26

I also agree with Edinburgh. The hills mean you get to see layers of lovely buildings, and then Princes St Gardens right down the centre of the city. Dean Village, Stockbridge, the sun shining on the Forth, and the Castle louring in the background. Gorgeous.

Eze · 03/12/2024 08:27

Durham or York

JeremiahBullfrog · 03/12/2024 08:31

Cambridge is nice for the half a square mile of old buildings in the centre, half of the actual town is 1950s council estates and pretty bleak.

DrHGS · 03/12/2024 08:34

London and Chester

Toseland · 03/12/2024 08:47

Colchester - especially the Castle and it's park.

Starlight1979 · 03/12/2024 08:50

We've just got back from a long weekend in York. It was stunning! Absolutely loved all of it. We spent hours just walking round aimlessly, the buildings, the history, the shopping, the restaurants and bars... All of it was just fab. I want to go back 😭

Moonlightstars · 03/12/2024 08:52

I prefer Oxford to Cambridge
I prefer Edinburgh to York.
I prefer Edinburgh to London (just)
I prefer Bath to Bristol.
I prefer Oxford to Bath
But can't decide between Edinburgh and Oxford.

senua · 03/12/2024 08:57

Isn't it depressing that all the suggestions are, basically, 'old architecture'. Why are so many modern buildings so ugly.Sad

JoanThursday · 03/12/2024 08:57

York lass here. I feel very lucky to live here. But, by 'eck, it's rammed right now: 1000s of visitors coming in every day for the Xmas markets. That's me done till January!

Novaavon · 03/12/2024 08:57

As beauty is in the eye of the beholder I would say Glasgow. The Victorian and early 20th century architecture is stunning. It's everything a city should be.

FKAT · 03/12/2024 09:01

I'm usually a contrarian on these threads but Edinburgh is pretty hard to beat. And it knows it.

London of course - for every grotty bit there's usually at least one or two absolutely stunning places and it has unexpected beauty in odd places - the gorgeous playgrounds around the Holloway Road, the view from Suicide Bridge, the top of Centrepoint when the sky is blue...

I will defend to my last days Liverpool being beautiful. The Liver building, the Anglican Cathedral and all the neo-classical galleries. Stunning.

I don't get the love for Oxford or Cambridge - some lovely historical buildings in otherwise blah cities. It's like saying Peterborough is beautiful.

2021x · 03/12/2024 09:02

…..no one is saying Southend then 😉

Cattery · 03/12/2024 09:03

London. Look at amazing ariel shots of the city and West End plus the beautiful sky line ❤️

GoFaster83 · 03/12/2024 09:05

Edinburgh is beautiful. The views from any of the 7 hills (craiglockhart East and West is one of my favourites) are just outstanding. Not a bad way to walk the dog! I feel very lucky- even at 8am on the weekend when I actually wanted a lie in...

eggandonion · 03/12/2024 09:07

I lived in Cambridge which is pretty, especially when it's quiet!
We used to get the train to Peterborough, just because the cathedral precinct was fabulous. But equally I love all the modern buildings in London.
This thread makes me want to go on lots of coach tours!
