Would you pay £500 each to upgrade to business for an 8 hour flight?

Flying home overnight from Barbados. Working from home the day we land. An upgrade to Business would cost roughly £500 each. This is vs economy standard.

It’s a relatively short long haul flight, at 8 hours. Is it worth it? £1000 is about 15% of our take home salary for context.

Yep without hesitation - that’s an unusually low upgrade fee.

dottiehens · 09/11/2024 10:10

I would. Recently upgraded one and literally had not jet lag the next day. That I could sleep plus the time of my flight helped.

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 09/11/2024 10:25

Absolutely not.

hollymeetsivy · 09/11/2024 10:25

Yes! Comfort for £500 is so worth it

hollymeetsivy · 09/11/2024 10:28

Plus you'll be excited about the flights too, making the whole experience special

BiggerBoat1 · 09/11/2024 10:29

No definitely not. I’m not fussed how I travel though - you still get to the same place at the same time!

Parry5timesbeforedeath · 09/11/2024 10:30

Yes. Considering I have just paid £8 k for a long haul at Christmas for bog standard economy I would consider £500 pp a bargain.

TizerorFizz · 09/11/2024 10:32

Yes. If BA it’s a bargain. You get your seat first, hopefully a lounge beforehand and it’s just more relaxed. Should be flat bed. No idea about lie flat beds on other airlines but they make a difference! If it’s not, maybe think twice.

You still have the time difference though! So of course you need to adjust back here whatever class of seats you book! We always fly business now and enjoy getting a nap with 8 hour flights. The flight back from Barbados could be quite busy so empty economy might not be what you get. Plus they want seat belts on a lot more now after turbulence issues. You might be woken up to do that!

If I took home 15k a month I wouldn’t be travelling economy in the first place.

Well, quite!

roses2 · 09/11/2024 10:35

It’s a night flight where you’ll hopefully be sleeping. I wouldn’t as the BA business beds were not comfy and I barely slept a wink when I used them! Save the £1k for something else eg lounge access and some nice neck pillows (assuming the upgrade is £500 each x 2 people)

MissHalloween · 09/11/2024 10:36

I absolutely works, that sounds like a good deal to me.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 09/11/2024 10:40

Is there a 'half-way house' of Premium Economy?
Biggger seats, better meals but no flat bed.

nocoriander · 09/11/2024 10:41

Motnight · 09/11/2024 10:34

Well, quite!

Who is earning £15000 a month? Not the OP.

From UK to New York no

From UK to Tokyo yes

She said it's from Barbados

Userxyd · 09/11/2024 10:46

We had a 4 hour night flight once in poly seats - agony as v tired and had backache and could not sleep. Pit us off flying even 4 hours again! So yes do it - just think of it as an essential holiday cost.

BibbityBobbityToo · 09/11/2024 10:46

I wouldn't, I would be sleeping and can usually sleep in cattle class with noise cancelling earphones. Might not be a comfy as a lay flat Business Class bed but sleep is sleep and I can think of much better things to blow £500 on.

Unless you're unlucky and end up with a 30st seat neighbour like I did on my last flight, poor lady was shoe horned in and was spilling over into my seat, I couldn't move as her bits overhanging my seat kept getting crushed when I made any movement at all. Everytime the cabin crew came past her other side was whacked with the trolley. She must have been black and blue by the time she got off the flight, definitely should have been offered 2 seats to herself.

Userxyd · 09/11/2024 10:47

Poky not poly seats!! V tight no space at all.

Rosiestraws · 09/11/2024 10:50

That's a bargain if its proper business class (I paid £460 from economy to premium a few weeks ago) so I would snap it up immediately! Assuming you're comfortable with the spending then yes it's worth it in my opinion. As another poster said, you'll actually be looking forward to the flight home now!

jaundicedoutlook · 09/11/2024 10:50

It’s pretty good value (assuming it’s proper business class, flat bed, etc) and for an overnight flight when you’re working the next day is a lifesaver.

I’m something of a cheapskate when it comes to spending money on flights and I wouldn’t consider using own money for business class as the cost is ruinous - typically £4k or more for transatlantic. We regularly fly to the far east and always buy premium economy - only time we’ve done business for personal use was when DH had enough BA points to spend on upgrade, and annoyingly it was on one of the older aeroplanes where the lie flat bed was the old fold down bench type with the shonky dividers between the seats…!

Oreyt · 09/11/2024 10:52

£6,000 a month. Depends what your outgoings are presumably you have a big mortgage and expensive cars? Otherwise I don't think you would be asking the question?

User1836484645R · 09/11/2024 10:02

If I took home 15k a month I wouldn’t be travelling economy in the first place.

Where do you get £15,000 a month from?

iloveeverykindofcat · 09/11/2024 10:53

No but I'm a flight cheapskate now. I get sent on longhaul flights for work and ofc that's the budget option, so I think I've gotten used to it. I just try to get night flights, curl up in a ball and sleep. 500 for 8 hrs is too much.

kiana2015 · 09/11/2024 10:55

If I could afford it I would

Maddy70 · 09/11/2024 10:55

Yes. Worth every penny

PositivityVibes · 09/11/2024 10:56

In a heartbeat!

In my younger years I scrimped and saved, I'm older now and I'm all for comfort and the best I can afford. No pockets in shrouds Wink
