DD going on ski trip. Can anyone recommend a good ski jacket on a budget?

Hello,
My daughter is going skiing with the school in Feb. Can anyone recommend a brand or jacket? She's going for a week and chances are we won't go again as a family so don't want to break the bank. The cost of the holiday has been enough!
I've been looking on Vinted but not sure which brands are best.

Many thanks in advance

Have a look at the Wedze jackets at Decathlon. Always good quality for the cost

If you're looking for second hand, one of my teenage DDs has a Roxy jacket, so that could be a good brand to look for for teenage girls

LIZS · 26/10/2024 08:44

Check out dare2b and Trespass

Latevictorianpleasureseeker · 26/10/2024 08:45

Just go to decathlon or mountain warehouse, they're fine. I wear the one I bought from mountain warehouse during the winter.

rockstuckhardplace · 26/10/2024 08:46

Ski bottoms arguably more important! As well as gloves, base layers and socks. You could buy all new at Decathlon and then sell it on Vinted.

SunmerSazz · 26/10/2024 08:47

DD got hers from Decathlon. But Vinted is a good idea too as often not worn much.

hellsbells99 · 26/10/2024 08:55

Aldi has their ski wear in around the 10th November last year. Always worth a look as their gear is good quality and cheap.
otherwise buy a nice second ski jacket in black that they will wear again as a normal winter jacket. My now adult DDs still wear ski jackets we bought about 8 years ago as winter jackets and ski jackets. They also have an Animal and a Roxy jacket bought second hand as teens that still fit.

LostMySocks · 26/10/2024 09:07

Places like trespass and I think snow and rock used to do budget ski outfits of the everything you need for £x.
Trespass pretty much always has a sale.

StamppotAndGravy · 26/10/2024 09:27

Pretty much anything from a sports store will probably be ok for a beginner, but maybe rewaterproof it before she goes if you buy from vinted. I wouldn't buy an M&S or NewLook 'ski' coat, but Roxy, Trespass, Protest, HellyHansen, Wedze/Decathlon, Peter Storm, North Face, Jack Wolfskin etc will all be fine. Then it's a question of size, colour & budget. Decathlon is all worth a look because their stuff is genuinely good and durable whilst also cheap with plenty of choice. Ski jackets make good winter jackets anyway so she might get more wear out of it than expected if you see a nice looking one.

EBay is always worth a look. That’s where we got my son’s from. It’s quite common for a child to go skiing once and then sell on eBay.

Agree don't buy a generic jacket from a fashion retailer, including puffer jackets which are not good in wet snow conditions and take ages to dry out. Look for waterproof , windproof fabrics with internal zip pockets, elasticated lining inside cuffs and snowskirt, lift pass pocket on the sleeve. If buying secondhand be careful that the waterproofing has not been washed off and perhaps buy a reproofing wash to redo before use.

Scottishskifun · 26/10/2024 10:06

Hi OP I get all my DS's ski stuff from Vinted as he out grows it quickly!

Your looking for high waterproof ability 10,000+ rating is best and insulation.
In terms of brands - agree decathlon, Wedze, legowear etc tends to be good. Very good ski brands - Spyder, Eider, Solomon, Columbia, North Face. You can filter by brand.

I generally find the likes of Roxy, Trespass, dare 2b (unless a high waterproof rating) tend to not be as good as on a whole lower waterproof and breathability rating.
Ask sellers questions or see if you can find the spec details online.

You will also want to buy some nikwax wash and rewaterproofing this will ensure that its treated properly.

Where is she going? Ski jacket for Canada will be different from Andorra…..
Assuming somewhere in Europe, decathlon is fine but I would also check tk maxx. A bit hit and miss but you can get great deals.

You're all amazing, thank you. All really helpful advice for someone who's never been skiing!

Mountain warehouse- cheap and practical and you can get a non cringe plain black one.

Vinted is a good shout brands
tresspass
MW
nirth face
button
volcom
dare 2 b
picture

look for good waterproof and breath ability and a ski skirt- but inside that you fasten up around the waist so when you fall the snow doesn’t go all up your back.

gloves and good socks are essential! Make sure you get socks that go up to just under her knee. Thermal base layers- again vinted. Goggles are also a must- can you borrow anything from anyone?

Lovelysummerdays · 26/10/2024 11:01

Mountain warehouse is good. I’d buy salopettes second hand on vinted or eBay.

TheWormThatTurned · 26/10/2024 11:01

Definitely have a look at Vinted.
I got really good quality stuff there for less than I would have paid brand new in decathlon etc.
we got base layers and gloves in trespass.

Havanananana · 26/10/2024 16:47

Don't rule out "asking a friend / other parent" - if the school runs the ski trip every year, there are likely to be numerous ski jackets and trousers stashed away in people's wardrobes that were bought for last year's or the previous year's trip and haven't seen the light of day since. If you have work colleagues who ski with their families, or know parents from your children's sports or social activities then ask these too.

AltitudeCheck · 26/10/2024 16:58

Check out 'Skibay' on FB and look on Google for other rental options if you don't want to buy.

FoodieToo · 26/10/2024 17:01

We ski every year and have 5 teens/ young adults and have never bought specific ski jackets . I really see no need . They just use their normal winter jacket and have never had any issue !

Carnationstreet7 · 26/10/2024 17:02

Tk maxx usually good

Justfeelsweird · 26/10/2024 17:04

I bought my son a ski jacket from a charity sale a few weeks ago, it was originally from Decathlon.

I was going to use it just as an extra coat to wear to football when he's subbed or out on walks for this country ( we are not going ski-ing)

Can you wear ski coats as normal coats in Winter? 🤔

summer3219 · 26/10/2024 17:25

I got everything for my DD from Lidl when they got their ski range in and it was all fine. The school actually recommended it.
