We booked a family holiday to sharem el sheik for October for 10 days for the snorkelling and scuba diving I told my extended family today and they were horrified because of the politics saying it is so unsafe have I done the wrong thing? Oh no is it not safe? Was it a bad idea …..?

I've never been, but a colleague is there at the moment and hasn't said anything bad.

Soditsally · 14/08/2024 19:12

I have 2 colleagues there at the moment
Having a great time

marriednotdead · 14/08/2024 19:17

We are booked to go in the New Year and went at the end of last year. Have no concerns at the moment. It's not in a region prone to issues in recent times and my sister likened it to worrying about trouble in Scotland when you live in Birmingham.

sweetiepie1979 · 14/08/2024 22:19

Oh I love this @marriednotdead I’ll keep using that as an answer to the people who look horrified when I’ve said I’ve booked. Thank you x

I'd be more worried about the snorkelling and scuba diving follow the shark related deaths there.

sweetiepie1979 · 14/08/2024 22:25

@marriednotdead you must like it then .. any advice or must Dos we are staying in the picalbatross x

I live in Cairo. We are safe as houses in Egypt.

Sharm's a bit naff, but good fun with kids 😊. You'll have a great time.

Sharks are more of a Ramadan thing.

Lots of livestock gets boated in ready for Eid. Dead animals go overboard.

Meg & her mates follow the tasty buffet boats in from deeper waters, & may occasionally get confused & accidentally chomp on a nasty bony tourist.

Genuinely, shark attacks along that coastline are a) rare & b) seasonal - see above.

Growlybear83 · 14/08/2024 22:38

It wouldn't worry me being in Egypt at the moment. My daughter is currently in Amman in Jordan, and says that, despite all the posturing by all sides, she still feels much safer there than she does in London and Birmingham at the moment.

Gymmum82 · 14/08/2024 22:39

Not long returned from hurghada. Super safe. Had a great time. The diving was excellent. Sharks were not scary. Also stayed at pickalbatross. You’ll be fine and love it I’m sure

I went to Sharm twice in one year right after the Luxor bombings years ago. It was fine. There's rioting happening all over the UK and you are worried about Egypt! Have you read other countries advice about travel to UK currently?

I'd love to go to Egypt but I heard that the sexual harassment of women is off the scale.

Iasonnas · 14/08/2024 23:47

And the food poisoning, not for me 🤢

Food was good. Drinks your standard local spirits which always taste like petrol and beer was ok. Soft drinks fine. I’m not a big drinker so it doesn’t bother me

Gymmum82 · 15/08/2024 05:54

The only thing I’d say is do not drink the water. Do not brush your teeth with the water otherwise you will likely get sick. We were fine in hurghada

trulybee · 15/08/2024 06:05

We went to Hurghada and Luxor in July and had a great time.
We've been multiple times for the last 22 years. We visited 2 weeks after 9/11, during the Iraq war, we happened to be there during the Arab spring and we have always had the same reaction from randoms such as work colleagues 'Is it safe?'and always been fine and had a great time.
I guarantee that even if there were not currently problems in Israel people would still question safety.
