We booked a family holiday to sharem el sheik for October for 10 days for the snorkelling and scuba diving I told my extended family today and they were horrified because of the politics saying it is so unsafe have I done the wrong thing? Oh no is it not safe? Was it a bad idea …..?

I’ve just returned from Sharm and stayed at a pickalbatros hotel. Where are you staying?

It’s the Laguna one by the beach. How did you get on? Were you diving ? I know they don’t have a dive centre at that one but we preferred it to some of the other hotels that were available and the reviews were very good

@marriednotdead you must like it then .. any advice or must Dos we are staying in the picalbatross x

We were in Hurgada last,Taba prior to that but I have never been to Sharm before. My dsis used to go there a couple of times a year pre pandemic as she's a huge snorkelling fan. I can finally swim so I can see the appeal now!

As others have said, don't drink the water or have ice and you'll be ok. I'm usually the first to have a dicky tummy and I was fine.
It's a Muslim country so things like going topless or coming down to breakfast in skimpy clothing would not be something I would do there, even if I was comfortable doing it in Europe etc.
Their pay rates are very low compared to the UK so tips are always appreciated- our last hotel had sectioned tip boxes for the different teams which meant nobody was forgotten.

We stayed at the Royal Moderna which was fabulous - we didn’t even end up doing the diving lol as the walk from our room to the pier / water at the hotel was about 10-15 mins through the hotel gardens pools etc and it was far too hot and we couldn’t be bothered haha. It was 38• we kept saying ‘let’s go later when it’s cooler’ but it never was 😂
We did drive past your hotel on the minibus and it looked good from outside!

MrsZlatan · 15/08/2024 09:09

Oh and none of us were ill- two adults two teens and 9yo DD.

We had loads of drinks with ice - the easyJet rep told us that ice is made from filtered water and said to use bottled water to brush teeth but that was it.

Spirits were horrible though be warned if you like gin - best take a bottle from the airport and have that!

Take rehydration sachets and Imodium. Also pack insect repellent and anti histamine

We’re not long back. It was completely fine but full of Russians who were silent (but managed at the same time to be hostile).

PrincessHoneysuckle · 15/08/2024 09:15

I'm there now.Its gorgeous and the people here are so friendly.

We’re going in October too. I’m not worried. On a couple of Facebook groups and everyone seems to be having a great time, not feeling unsafe at all. I’m sure if it really was under threat, the FCDO would make it red.

Pigeonqueen · 15/08/2024 09:39

I’m in a number of holiday groups and haven’t heard anything negative except people moaning about upset stomachs etc (and these are people staying in 5 star resorts). I think as long as you stick to safe, touristy areas you’ll be fine.

No but we have the option to x

snowlady4 · 15/08/2024 09:49

It is absolutely fabulous. You will love it.
The security is super- you will feel really safe.
The only thing that would stop me going is a travel advisory telling me not to go.
Enjoy!

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 15/08/2024 09:57

I’ve been, probably wouldn’t go again as I hate all inclusive/it’s very hot/I’m vegan/I don’t like pacing around the hotel and got told off by gun toting security for walking around the perimeter.
Went with a girlfriend, got my bum felt by a waiter too. 🤷🏼‍♀️
Felt safe though, just not a fan. Dread to think how animals are treated over there too.
Snorkeling was lovely, friend was well
into her diving and went regularly with family.
