Where to go for a city break?

I'm in need of some inspiration please, I want to take DH and DS16 and DS13 away for a few days in the October half term.
The plan was always to go to Barcelona, DH and I have been and wanted to take the boys now they are older, but with the protests there and the general feeling of not wanting tourists we have been out off.
Have thought about Lisbon or maybe Porto, and also Seville as an alternative, a suggestions greatly welcome, I was so set on Barcelona that I'm finding it hard to get find somewhere else!

Berlin gets great reviews from friends as a great city break with teens

StSwithinsDay · 05/08/2024 21:07

Berlin is great. Also Copenhagen and Amsterdam.

Justmuddlingalong · 05/08/2024 21:08

Both were enjoyed by our teens

Mum2DD · 05/08/2024 21:11

We loved Marrakech and Istanbul

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 05/08/2024 21:14

Porto is a good shout. Nice is lovely. Both still warm during the day, night will be chilly.

Frenchsplit · 05/08/2024 21:14

The stasi museum in Berlin was particularly recommended

Lovetotravel123 · 05/08/2024 21:16

Prague or Rome?

EwwSprouts · 05/08/2024 21:17

DS 19 and I went to Dubrovnik in May and it was historic and lovely. Very friendly people. Cruise ships weren't present apart from 1 day and I guess would be the same in October.

anon12345anon · 05/08/2024 21:19

Krakow!! Absolutely beautiful and friendly city!!

CatStoleMyChocolate · 05/08/2024 21:21

Berlin is great. If not on a super tight budget, I’d also recommend Stockholm.

Lisbon is lovely, and you can travel out to Sintra for a day trip for the royal palaces.

CLEO42 · 05/08/2024 21:21

We’ve recently been to Ljubljana and I’d highly recommend it for a weekend break

Philandbill · 05/08/2024 21:21

My two loved Berlin when they were that age. Amsterdam, Lisbon and Paris have also been enjoyed.

Kitkat1523 · 05/08/2024 21:22

Seriously, the anti-tourist protests are by a homeopathic minority, and only attracted attention because they were such a novelty. In the month since the "OMG water pistols" attack (on 4 tourists by 2 women, as far as I can tell), there has been not one murmur about it. You're 1,000 times more likely to have your pocket picked, and that's also pretty unlikely if you take the most basic precautions like you would in any city.

So if you want to go to Barcelona, go to Barcelona (although Valencia and Palma are both better!😎). There is really nothing to be concerned about.

mamaduckbone · 05/08/2024 22:31

Following with interest as we want to take ds15 somewhere at October half term too and I was also thinking of Barcelona.
He also wants to go to Portugal and Italy, so considering Lisbon, Porto and Rome. I've not been to any of those but have been to Barcelona, so maybe we should branch out.

Fadeintoyou · 05/08/2024 22:35

Thanks, there are some really great suggestions there, I hadn't thought of Berlin so that's a possibility.
I might still get over myself and book Barcelona, I'm not worried about the pick pockets/demonstrations it was more a case of it they don't want us we shouldn't go.

@Fadeintoyou Check out Paris. Have you been watching the Olympics? What’s not to like?

Seville or Berlin both enjoyed by DDs. Rome or Venice or consider Bologna and go to the Ferrari museum. Lots to see in the Bologna area.

cavernclub · 05/08/2024 22:47

Vienna and Rome are my favourites.

Whenyoupickapawpaw · 05/08/2024 22:50

I also vote Berlin. Nuremberg is also very quaint, especially if you stay in the old town (Altstadt).
