Does anyone wear sandals all day on holiday? How will my feet feel?

Hi,

I'm going on holiday to Spain next month and I am thinking of wearing sandals all the time. I'm not really a sandal girl and on previous holidays I've stuck to pumps or my trusty sneakers. However, I have decided this year I'm going to wear sandals all day on holiday as I've just purchased a pair of birkenstocks. Has anyone else done this? Is it common? What are the physiological benefits?

Thank you!
Sarah

My feet would boil if I didn’t wear sandals in a warm country. Do you mean the physiological benefits of Birkenstocks specifically or wearing sandals?

Balloonhearts · 03/08/2024 12:30

I wear them all summer. Much cooler. Have have a pair from Shoezone and a pair of Sketchers that are soooo comfy.

We're in Spain . It's been really really hot and I've lived in Birkenstocks. Can't imagine putting my feet in a pair of trainers. My feet feel fine, but I am used to wearing them at home!

SalviaDivinorum · 03/08/2024 12:32

I love my Birkenstocks and can wear them all day every day and walk for miles.

However the leather ones do need breaking in so get used to them before you go.

New sandals might rub. Take plasters.

I wear comfy shoes/sneakers to travel in (walk long distances to flight gate etc) and take your sandals for day to day plus some pretty flat mules for pool/beach. That way you have alternatives if your B’stocks make your feet sore.

I wear very supportive sandals from Clarks - like BKs but not so ugly.
I don't wear them in e.g. Egypt or Jordan as sand in your toes is uncomfortable.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 03/08/2024 12:38

I have to say I've got absolutely no issue with wearing trainers when its hot, especially when outside as they cover your feet the same way a hat covers your head. Something like a light pair of sketchers rather than a leather sneaker though.

However with regards to sandals something like a Merrell walking sandal will be super comfy all day. I've also got some really comfortable sandals from clarks that I can walk all day in, the rubbing is a bit of a pain though.

Wear trainers for the plane and then I pack evening/dressier sandals and pool slides. I usually stick to
the slides or sandals but something you need a bit more comfort so the trainers are a god

I find Birkenstocks really really uncomfortable, but I wear sandals all summer, largely saltwater or similar I have a few pairs from seasalt that are also really comfortable soft leather and cushioned lightweight soles i

CoastalCalm · 03/08/2024 12:40

I wear Birkenstocks from March to September then switch to Crocs for the winter , unless of course I’m going out out - Birkenstock have been a revelation to me , just ordered a third pair

TheProvincialLady · 03/08/2024 12:41

When I wear sandals a lot I have to use heavy duty foot cream every day or my feet get dry and sore. Possibly that’s just my weird feet though.

Chewbecca · 03/08/2024 12:41

Huh?! I wear sandals / flip flops all holiday. I have 3 pairs of sandals and 1 pair of flip flops on my current trip, day sandals, evening ones and an in between pair!

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 03/08/2024 12:44

My Shoezone sandals are perfectly comfy all day, but don’t forget to slather your feet in sun cream.

Farcry66 · 03/08/2024 12:45

I'm a recent convert to Birkenstocks but they took me a bit of time to get used to. They hold your feet in a different position, whish is ultimately very comfortable, but took me gradually wearing them in - I had thought I might have made a costly mistake.

I wore them for a full day in London yesterday with lots of walking - very comfortable!

QueenOfWeeds · 03/08/2024 12:45

My worst ever blisters came from trying to break in Birkenstocks - they just didn’t work for my feet and I abandoned them pretty quickly. My friend lives in hers though.

I’d pick a pair (whatever brand) quickly and wear them with socks around the house to try and break them in.

menopausalmare · 03/08/2024 12:46

I live in Birkenstocks in the summer but the downside is your skin is dry and feet can get crusty😬. Just this minute got back from having a pedicure and they feel fantastic. If you're going to be a responsible sandals wearer, please ensure that members of the public don't have to ensure looking at your cracked heels.😄

Barnabyby · 03/08/2024 12:46

Yes I do. I've got some comfy Clarks sandals and I also have a pair of Saltwater boardwalk sandals. Both I can wear all day with no problems.

Dilbertian · 03/08/2024 12:48

When it's hot I live in my Birkenstock sandals all summer.

If you are not used to Birkenstocks, you may not be able to wear them constantly at first. It took me about two weeks to build up to wearing my first pair all the time. Now that I use Birkenstocks all year round, I can just step into a new pair and off I go.

I find bare heels get very dry in sandals all day, so I moisturise them a lot. I have toe-less gel heel sock-like things which I wear in bed when I do an intensive overnight moisturise.

I wear sandals all day in the uk, either Archie’s or Bokyna. https://www.bokyna.com

Yes but I took one sliders, one flip flops and one slightly wedged sandal so my feet didn't hurt from wearing the same shoes all day and evening.
I'd wear flip flops year round if I could though!

EmmaStone · 03/08/2024 12:55

I wear Birkenstocks all summer, and agree with others, make sure you've got used to wearing them before trying to go all day in a pair. I've also bought a pair of Tevas this summer, and OMG, they're fab! Glad they're trendy at the moment! DD19 has also bought a pair (She's gone for the original style, mine are narrow strapped, so slightly daintier).

On holiday I take a pair of trainers for the gym or particularly difficult terrain (eg walking around Greek/Roman ruins), but wear Birkies for everything else (and this summer Tevas too).

Mumoftwo1316 · 03/08/2024 12:56

Don't forget sunblock on your feet. Dh always laughs at my feet tan lines.

Moier · 03/08/2024 12:57

I do in day.. Clarks Cloudsteppers or my Croc flip-flops.. on an evening if doing some walking round l might wear my skecher trainers with a dress.

Baddaybigcloud · 03/08/2024 12:57

Get some soft sole Birkenstocks - don’t need the wearing in. You’ll be fine - or some Eva Birkenstocks if you’re going to be wearing them beach/poolside
