Does anyone wear sandals all day on holiday? How will my feet feel?

Hi,

I'm going on holiday to Spain next month and I am thinking of wearing sandals all the time. I'm not really a sandal girl and on previous holidays I've stuck to pumps or my trusty sneakers. However, I have decided this year I'm going to wear sandals all day on holiday as I've just purchased a pair of birkenstocks. Has anyone else done this? Is it common? What are the physiological benefits?

Thank you!
Sarah

I wear sandals all summer which includes holidays. I'm always disappointed when the weather gets cold and I have to start wearing shoes and trainers again.

I only wear merrell sandals, never any blisters and I have ankle support

I wore only hiking sandals (took two identical pairs, partly to wear a clean pair in public areas of guesthouses/ hostels, partly to swap as patterns of wear etc make this helpful) on a five day walk from Bregenz to Rapperswil in Switzerland last summer. Only about 105km but obviously lots of up and down and unpaved hiking tracks.

The only annoyance was the gravel paths where small stones sometimes got on my sandals, but even on those the relief of cooler feet in comparison to closed trail runners or hiking boots was worth it!

I have (separately) done 30km hiking days on trails in hiking sandals. In hot weather they're so pleasant to walk in (and quick to take off to paddle in mountain streams - or indeed if you take two pairs and the streams are stoney fine to wear in the water).

There are sandals and sandals obviously, but it's certainly not true that trainers are universally better for walking in.

For me hiking sandals are multiple times better for serious hot weather walking / hiking than any trainer or running shoes - only my actual hiking boots are better for walking (but my feet swell in them in very hot weather and actually get waterlogged and look as though I'm getting trench foot by the end of the day, and if I start in boots because of a serious rocky climb the relief of switching to hiking sandals for the rest of the hike is immense.

At home on a work day I do between 10,000 and 15,000 steps (active job) and again wouldn't want to wear anything but hiking sandals most of the day (sometimes change to closed indoor shoes for specific tasks but that's a very small part of the day).

Pumps! I haven't heard that since I used to do PE.

Birkies need wearing in or you'll blister.

Yes. Wear the ones that are structured properly for your feet and designed for walking in. Try sandals from brands that make walking boots and sandals.

I live in my croc V wedge flip
flops ( I have 3 pairs ) and my snakeskin pattern Birkenstock

only problem I had was that the underneath of the buckle moved slightly and was rubbing my toe
so if I hadn’t taken my crocs I would have been in agony

I also take trainers in case I go anywhere that flip flops / sandles aren’t any good

Air and Grace make super comfy sandals that don't need wearing in like birkies

I have a couple of pairs of sandals from Clark's and the Hotter Tourist ones, plus some footbed style pool slides from Next. On a warm-weather holiday I would only think of putting on trainers if it rained. We went to Spain in February and even then I wore sandals during the day times most days - although trainers/boots definitely needed for the evening (this was over 3 weeks).

I have permanently stripy feet!

I live in Birkenstock Madrids all summer (just did a 10 mile round walk in them today).

We were on holiday in the South of France last month for 8 days and they were the only shoes I took. We are big walkers (like 10 - 15 miles a day at least) and it was fine.

As others have said break them in before you go. Birkenstocks are, for about 2 weeks, the most uncomfortable shoes you will ever wear and then suddenly they become the most comfortable thing you have ever put your feet - like walking barefoot. Vaseline is your friend while breaking them in.

You will get hobbity feet so get a pedicure and moisturise regularly.
