Can anyone suggest anywhere that is similar to Switzerland please? We went a couple of years again and loved the mountains and lakes, and all the public open air swimming pools. Walking and water sports. The kids really enjoyed it and fancied doing something similar again.
Thanks

Have you thought about the Black Forest in Germany.
Also Chamonix is an amazing outdoor playground! White water rafting, ice climbing, mountain walks, cable cars into the mountains for hiking and mountain bike trails.
Another place could be Zakopane in Poland. Great hiking and mountain bike trails, Gorgeous lakes, nice restaurants. Great for families.lots to do if you get the funicular ( or walk) to the top of Gubalowka

Thank you! Sounds exactly the kind of thing we were looking for

I’d second the French Alps idea. The Megeve area is great in Summer, with swimming lakes at Praz sur Arly and Flumet. And maybe go up to the Aiguille du Midi on the cable car from Chamonix.

Austria is lovely. We stayed in st Johan last year. Lots of mountain walking from the door or short car rides away. Lots of mountains have 'parks' at the top - toboggan runs, play areas, splash parks can walk up or take cable cars. St Johan has outdoor swimming pool with slides but also mountain lakes. We are returning this year to stay by one of the lakes we found - walchsee. Easy to get there from Munich or salzburg.

I came on to say all these and have been beaten to it. Would add St. Anton in Aarlberg in Austria.

Slovenia.
Beautiful country and imo Lake Bohinj is much more beautiful than Lake Bled.

theotherfossilsister · 01/08/2024 20:14

Seconding the Black Forest. We went to Gengenbach and it was glorious.

The Rockies, Canada.

Zell am Zee

Can I ask where you stayed in Switzerland? I’m looking for somewhere for next year for a large group family holiday with loads to do for the kids.

MistyMountainTop · 01/08/2024 21:06

I second the Slovenian mountains, beautiful

House4DS · 01/08/2024 21:10

Just got back from Zell am See and Salzburg.
So much to do. The summer card, free with many accommodations (can't be bought) gives free access to cable cars, public transport, lidos and more.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 01/08/2024 21:12

Tegernsee, Germany. With a little sightseeing in Munich.

Izzynohopanda · 01/08/2024 21:13

Annecy in France. Lovely lake surrounded by mountains.

South Tyrol in northern Italy. Around Merano and Bolzano. Beautiful. Lots of hikes and walks and cable cars.

TheTripThatWasnt · 01/08/2024 21:45

Slovenia.

Beautiful (Bohinj and Bled both very much so - only 30 mins from each other but v different). Relatively cheap. Easy to get around (excellent bus network). Great food and wine. Friendly people. Lovely capital city. Great little coastline (Piran is a gorgeous town). Fab walking. Mountains. Could probably go on, but that's a potted summary!

GreatTheCat · 01/08/2024 22:03

Norway!

Lots of lovely suggestions here. Any recommendations for places to stay in the Black Forest with young kids? Was after a holiday park like you get in France or Holland but they don't seem to be a thing in Germany.

Jk987 · 01/08/2024 22:20

Austria - it's stunning!

We stayed in Lauterbraunan, but it's also worth looking at Interlaken as it's a bit bigger.
It's just stunning round there!
