Family adventure next summer - where shall we go?

Next summer DD will be 11 and I'm taking 6 weeks off work so we (including DH) can have an adventure before she goes up to secondary school. We'll probably go away for 4-5 weeks so we have a bit of time before and after.

There's so many places that we'd like to go, can't do them all - Canada, California, Mexico, Japan, Indonesia - and probably a load of places that aren't on the list which could be!

Looking for advice about places to go that are safe, fun, exciting, but also manageable for an 11 year old.

I've travelled a lot, DH much less, DD only Europe. Probably want a mix of experiences, not all cities, nor all wilderness.

Where should we be looking at for July-August next year?

I can't really help but that sounds amazing, hope you have a wonderful time!

I would consider a trip where you can't reasonably do it in 2 weeks. Based on that i would suggest going east, se Asia and Japan perhaps, using the train and bus network would be adventurous but manageable at 11. If you haven't watched it, the latest series of race across the world was filmed there and has lots of good suitable ideas.

California for instance is easy to do as a normal if expensive holiday, can recommend 2 week trips I've done, se Asia has much longer journey times

I would highly recommend Canada. You could go to the Calgary Stampede then go off from there. Or fly to Toronto and do a few days then hire a car or motorhome and there's several routes you can do, stopping on the way at sites with pools etc or at lakes with beaches. We saw bears, moose, eagles - and we can't wait to take our kids back.

Agree with the above, I would avoid Mexico in the summer as it is hurricane season

Indonesia for sure. Perfect time of year and you could travel from Java to Lombok. 👍👍 See you there 👍👍

I'd choose Japan or Costa Rica.

Both are on my bucket list for when I can ever take 4 weeks off work.

Closer to home, I have a UK version of visiting the Scilly Isles, the Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland!
