Majorca or Tenerife?

juicyjellybaby · 07/06/2024 09:21

Anyone been to both? What do they prefer?I have been looking at spring bitacora in Tenerife for our family holiday next year but the longer plane journey is putting me off. I was thinking maybe Majorca but do they have anything else to do rather than beaches? My husband doesn't like laying about too long so I thought maybe Tenerife would be good to do the animals parks etc...

I've been to Majorca and Tenerife. Depending what time of year you're going, Majorca will be hotter in peak summer, almost too hot for us to do anything! There are plenty of things to do though, animal parks, water parks, aquariums etc and more scenery type stuff like caves, and the usual boat trips. We also went horse riding.
Local buses are really good and easy to get around.
If you want lots of options for stuff to do probably stay around Palma area because the North & East is quieter.
Tenerife is also great with plenty to do, and a bit bigger. I prefer the climate in Tenerife tbh because it's not quite as hot and less humid.
The flight is twice as long so Majorca is better if flying is an issue.

Plenty to do on Majorca; no need to confine yourself to beach/pool. The mountains and the north coast are stunning. Palma itself is worth a good day. Puerto Soller is another lovely place.

Tenerife also has a mountainous centre and lots of off the coast/beach stuff.

Sue152 · 07/06/2024 11:58

Palma is a lovely city, then there's a wooden tourist train that goes to Soller and a tram you can take down to Port De Soller. All very lovely.

NCTDN · 07/06/2024 15:21

I'd contradict a pp and say that Tenerife will be hotter!
Majorca has more towns to visit rather than just holiday resorts

Nopet · 07/06/2024 15:22

Majorca is so much more varied.

juicyjellybaby · 07/06/2024 15:24

I may have to try both Grin I am leaning towards Tenerife at the moment

Mallorca. Really not a fan of tenetife. Mallorca is greener with beautiful bays. Teneeofe just doesnt do it for me. Although i appreciate everyone is different

CheeseWisely · 07/06/2024 15:41

I've been to both several times and like Tenerife but prefer Majorca.

Some things to do in Majorca (not exhaustive):

Palma City
The vintage train / tram from Palma to Soller & Port de Soller
The Aquarium
The Caves of Drach
Water Parks
Lots of varied picturesque resorts to explore
Tramuntana mountains and pretty mountain villages like Valledemossa.
Much nicer beaches than Tenerife and more of them.

Warmer and safer sea swimming than Tenerife (being the Med rather than the Atlantic).

Solena · 07/06/2024 15:46

It all depends when you go and how hot you want it.
Tenerife warm all year round but in summer Majorca is hotter.
I would say there's plenty to see in both places but I wouldn't go to any kind of zoo.
Theflight to Tenerife is usually about 4 hours, sometimes a bit more. Majorca is 2 and a bit hours. To me the journey time is taken up more by the trip to airport, check in times and travel onwards to destination so an extra 2 hours flight is a small part of it.
I just came back from Mallorca, the entire trip was 8 hours each way, door to door
Be aware that some resorts in mallorca are a fairly long way from Palma.

juicyjellybaby · 07/06/2024 16:09

@Solena we are thinking may or June. We done salou last year and this year and the kids enjoyed it but want to book somewhere different for next year

I just got back from Mallorca and it wasn't quite warm enough for me in May. Mid 20s and windy. Torrential rain one day and light rain another. Obviously different every year but was disappointed with the weather.

itsalwaysthesame · 08/06/2024 20:13

@juicyjellybaby we are just back from Tenerife and it was lovely, loads to do with kids, mine are almost 12 and almost 9, we did Loro Park, Aqualand, Tide by night and a boat trip to see the whale's.
We stayed if the GF Isobel and although I've never booked to back to the same place twice before, we enjoyed it so much I've booked for next year.

I was looking at Majorca too but ended up rebooking Tenerife

Yes, a lot of people have told me that the weather is very unreliable in May

I’m going in 2 weeks so have been keeping an eye. It’s still only low 20s (which I prefer) and showers

If you go to Tenerife please don't go to Loro Parque, keeping orcas in captivity is just awful and the dolphin area is tiny and so cruel;

Orcas in their natural habitat normally live between 30 and 50 years. Their estimated maximum life expectancy is 60 years for males and 80 years for females. However, in captivity, the average age of orcas is only about 14 years.

@itsalwaysthesame how did you find the food in gf Isobel? I am looking at spring bitacora but gf Isobel is coming up at a better price and looks nice too

Agree with pp, please don't go to marine life parks....
I would choose Mallorca every time. So beautiful.

reluctantbrit · 09/06/2024 19:26

I think we would vote for Majorca over Tenerife.

We have been to the north and south of Tenerife but in general we prefer the vibe and opportunities of Majorca.

We have been in May and June to Majorca. May was definitely a hit and miss, the second time the last half was UK half term (DD wasn’t in school yet and we missed it ) and it was really bad, rain and 16 degrees.
June was more stable, not hot, mid twenties but warm enough to go out, explore and have more than beach and pool.

Tenerife - we went in April. South was warm, even on overcast days. You may need a jumper. In the north it was really cooler, in the mountains you had even now on Teide. I would say June is getting definitely hotter.

juicyjellybaby · 09/06/2024 19:45

@BringMeTea and @reluctantbrit is there any hotels in particular you would recommend in Majorca? I've been looking at Fergus club europa but it seems a bit out of the way I think

Majorca gets my vote

Mynewnameis · 09/06/2024 19:53

I didn't like south tenerife much. Mallorca early September was perfect weather.

GreatTheCat · 09/06/2024 20:21

I'm with a few others, Mallorca everytime.

Sorry, we had both times a villa

Tinks15 · 09/06/2024 22:19

Mallorca all the way for me.

Ihatemondays1962 · 09/06/2024 22:22

Majorca for me too. I'd agree with a couple of the comments above - please don't go to the marine parks they are very cruel.

juicyjellybaby · 09/06/2024 22:25

Everyone seems to be voting for Majorca. I've no interest in visiting the animal parks so that's not a worry although my daughter loves the idea of feeding the monkeys if we visit Tenerife lol
