Butlins Unfair holiday termination

Dontgi · 16/05/2024 14:56

My young families' holiday was terminated from Butlins skegness because my 6 year old son had a coughing fit in the early hours of our first morning there and was sick twice because of it.

Going to need a lot more info here...

Butlins threw you out because they thought he was carrying some sort of contagion?

You left of your own accord so you could look after your son at home?

Hoppinggreen · 16/05/2024 15:10

As above, were you throw out or did you leave?

ApolloandDaphne · 16/05/2024 15:18

Did someone see him be sick and demand you leave?

TheAceWoman · 16/05/2024 15:20

This seems unlikely.

Did you not clean it up?

YouveGotAFastCar · 16/05/2024 15:22

Yeah, we're going to need the rest of the story here...

Hoppinggreen · 16/05/2024 15:22

Posts like this amaze me.
Its like the opinions of MN are somehow going to give weight to a compo claim.
"But Butlins, what do you mean you aren't going to refund my stay and pay me £££ as well - MN said you should!!!"
If you want advice OP then provide info and someone might be able to offer constructive advice but we can't influence Butlins

How did they know?

Catchlock · 16/05/2024 15:23

Ok I'm hooked. I'll hang around for the rest of the show!

mitogoshi · 16/05/2024 15:27

If in the early hours, how would they know?

If in a communal area I'm guessing they are suspecting he's ill, fair enough they don't want other getting sick and even if not contagious, being sick in a communal location is not nice, something is up. Holiday insurance is what you claim on, we have an annual policy that covers worldwide (including U.K. short breaks) through our bank.

crumbpet · 16/05/2024 15:31

What's their policy? You know, the terms and conditions YOU AGREED TO. How did they know he was sick?

stopringingme · 16/05/2024 15:34

@Dontgi

Your opening post is lacking context can you tell us the whole story

Berlinlover · 16/05/2024 15:40

Come back and tell us more. It’s impossible to give advice when you’ve only written a few sentences. More information is needed please.

Dontgi · 16/05/2024 19:04

My husband rang to request fresh sheets, his opening line being "my son was ill last night" taken very literally!!

OP posts:
NestaArcheron · 16/05/2024 19:11

Well.. yeah if they suspected a sickness bug it's quite reasonable they don't want vomiting children spreading it across the whole site?

sleepyscientist · 16/05/2024 19:12

It's in the policy unfortunately.....it's contagious before symptoms so seems like a waste of time.

Dontgi · 16/05/2024 19:42

Ok whole story... May go on a bit 😅
We got to the resort afternoon Mon 8th April, my 6 year old son ate a double stacked burger followed by a chocolate sundae (If you can't over indulge on your holidays then when can you)? We proceeded with afternoon and then for 'evening meal' went to burger king, I believe my son had a chicken burger here but it was a while ago, some kind of burger again (oh dear!) needless to say we don't normally eat like this!
Anyway we went to bed fine and then at around 4am (I think) my son starts with a coughing fit, coughing so much that he brings up some phlegm and a bit of food, this was in his bed, he becomes upset and I am attending to him and tell him to get in with daddy and I would get in his bed. As soon as he lays down again he starts coughing again and brought up a bit more phlegm with a bit of food, the whole episode was within the space of half an hour tops, as in within half an hour my son was fine and asleep in mummy and daddy's bed. Later that day my husband makes the mistake of calling guest services to request fresh sheets and then the questioning came, what time, how long apart, (it was about 4 am in the morning, I wasn't recording the time just wanted everyone to get back to sleep). Because my son had been sick twice we were told that we had reported an illness and we could isolate in our room for 48 hours or have our holiday terminated!

OP posts:
ARichtGoodDram · 16/05/2024 19:48

Isolating for 48 hours after vomiting isn’t an unusual request - similar to schools.

Obviously, Butlin’s wouldn’t want him throwing up in the pool or passing it on to other people

Dontgi · 16/05/2024 19:48

People are sick without it being contagious, circumstances preceding vomiting usually gives you a fairly good indicator in my opinion, am I alone?

OP posts:
palmroyale · 16/05/2024 19:51

It's because of people who put their kids vomiting bugs down to 'just coughing fits' that these bugs spread.

Why wouldn't you isolate?

Dontgi · 16/05/2024 19:52

Absolutely could not agree more, if I suspected a sickness bug I would not want him spreading it and he wouldn't be well enough to enjoy any of the activities anyway, I'd much rather him stay home. The circumstances here do not give reasonable ground to suggest my son was inf

OP posts:
PilgrimsGrin · 16/05/2024 19:53

How do you determine what is contagious though without a sample being tested? That's why schools etc. have a blanket policy. I wasn't aware of a holiday park taking the same stance but cruises do and it's a good idea- no one wants norovirus or the like to spread through the camp.

You were offered the choice of isolating.

mitogoshi · 16/05/2024 19:53

Unless there's a specific underlying known medical condition, I would assume coughing in the night is caused by a virus, especially in a child if that age. If for example he has asthma and you know that it causes coughing fits which make him sick, obviously that's different but otherwise sorry m, I'm with them, balance of probability he's ill

YouveGotAFastCar · 16/05/2024 19:58

Unfortunately, a lot of people would choose not to isolate if there was any leeway - so there’s not. He was sick twice. That’s unlucky, and you’re not wrong that it could well have been an unfortunate combination of a mistimed cough and letting him absolute gouge on junk food for a day on holiday… but it also could not have been.

Isolating is a reasonable ask, and in their terms.

ARichtGoodDram · 16/05/2024 19:58

Also if you left, rather than isolate, then you terminated your holiday so your thread title is very misleading

why didn’t you isolate? Presumably you were there until at least the Friday so you’d have still had Thursday and Friday morning if you isolated Tue and wed

EdgarsTale · 16/05/2024 19:58

Butlins have a zero tolerance policy for vomiting, they do not want norovirus spreading through the resort. Perhaps don’t let your DS gorge himself on so much crap food that he makes himself sick 🤷‍♀️
