October hot holiday

GoingRoundInOvals · 14/05/2024 13:57

Thought would see if the Hive minds could come up with a solution as I'm going round in circles!

Details:
8-9 nights, first two weeks of Oct
2 adults, 1 child (2.5 years)

I want: hot. Not "mild tepid Europe at the end of the season warm" but "Greece in July" hot. I guess something around 28+ during the day.
However, would also like the "amble around nice villages and tavernas for dinner" type evenings and some local culture and things to see rather than just lying on a beach.

(Yes, ideally we should just go to a Greek island in July. However timings wise, first two weeks of October is what we have.)

DH doesn't like non direct flights and thinks too long a flight would be tricky with a toddler. I'm more gung-ho and a much more experienced traveller than him, so I have a more "it's fine let's just get on with it attitude"

If I could find a place that was interesting, a bit of culture, not an AI resort, hot and good food he could be persuaded on the long haul aspect.

was considering the Middle East, but I think he's a bit sniffy about dubai being all man made and nothing of any history or culture. Oman - not enough interest and tooo barren for a toddler. Egypt - not at the moment. Turkey - I love, but think it may have started to shut down by the second week of Oct.

Anyone got any ideas?

budget for 8-9 nights, self catering or breakfast only, I guess £2-3k

Dubai or Oman spring to mind. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but easy direct flight and the weather you want. Caribbean you’d need to check weather and flights, but might be an option. Suspect your budget may be quite limiting though?

cherryassam · 14/05/2024 14:36

Shorter haul the only places I can think to mention that you’ve not listed would be Morocco - Agadir or Taghazout perhaps - or Malta - but I think you’d be looking at 25-ish rather than 28. Marrakech would be hotter as it’s not coastal - but would be a different vibe of holiday. In Turkey, somewhere like Kalkan is usually ‘open’ until the end of October.

Longer haul (some of these might be a bit out there as suggestions, but I am thinking you’d have thought of the more obvious ones!):
Curacao
Sri Lanka
Mauritius - somewhere like Grand Baie
Barbados - Bridgetown maybe

With long haul, flight costs are always going to be your biggest issue so that would be my first place to check

GoingRoundInOvals · 14/05/2024 14:55

Hadn't heard of Kalkan, so thank you, will give that a Google.

we've considered the usual Mauritius etc but Sri Lanka is an interesting thought - I've had it off my radar for a few years due to their economic crisis but maybe I need to look it up again

It’s a lovely town, it’s usually pretty open well into the last week of October. I’ve been first week of October before and it’s certainly quieter than the summer but it didn’t have that slightly sad end of season vibe that some places get. I would warn that it might be different if October is forecast to be a wash out.

Sri Lanka is getting back to ‘normal’ in tourism terms after 2022, there really has been little unrest since and even during the shortages etc. tourists were not affected particularly. The only thing that would make me nervous is the monsoon season - I’ve done some more research since my first post and 2024 is due to be a heavy monsoon season. October can be a bit tricky as it’s sometimes considered inter-monsoon season as it can be when the monsoon swings from one coast to the other. The Yala monsoon (southwest coast) is usually over by October - but it sometimes isn’t from my understanding. And the inter-monsoon season can be rough (my memory when I made my first post said that October was dry and the inter-monsoon started in November). I’m rambling now - basically do do research on the weather!

Iamblossom · 14/05/2024 15:22

We are going to Tenerife in October, it's hot there then.

longdistanceclaraclara · 14/05/2024 15:39

I'm biased but Muscat / Oman is a perfect holiday for October and very definitely not barren!

GoingRoundInOvals · 14/05/2024 15:51

thanks Cherry, that's really really helpful, will definitely do some more research into CMB

Would be grateful for any inside Knowledge - my last visit to Oman was admittedly a few years ago but I mainly remember wadis and wadis and wadis and not much else...!

if there's some nice places to eat local food and relatively open places for a toddler to wander around that would be great!

If you're considering Kalkan in Turkey look too at Kas.

cherryassam · 14/05/2024 16:01

Side might also be an option in Turkey

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 14/05/2024 16:02

I’d go Marrakech. Stay outside medina in a more western hotel that offers shuttles into medina

caffelattetogo · 14/05/2024 16:03

Miami?

didldidi · 14/05/2024 16:09

Also voting for Kalkan, we are booked for the 1st week of October 😊

Amx · 14/05/2024 18:10

I think Turkey is a bit iffy if you want hot hot hot. October can be rainy.

Chewbecca · 14/05/2024 18:12

Crete should still be nice, and open, first week in October.

GoingRoundInOvals · 14/05/2024 18:14

Thanks everyone, some Good suggestions and things to ponder

If you want guaranteed hot I would stay away from Europe.

Caribbean or Mexico - hurricane season, the same with Florida.

Mauritius may be worth investigating, Sri Lanka as well.

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 14/05/2024 23:25

What about Morocco ?

PancakesWithLemonSugar · 15/05/2024 00:05

Florida

@GoingRoundInOvals - you have a lot of misconceptions. There is history and culture in UAE outside of central Dubai which is vegas on steroids.

What concerns you about holidaying in Sri Lanka due to their economic crisis? There may be some limitations in food options but I can assure you as a foreign tourist, you will be fine.

feliciabirthgiver · 15/05/2024 06:47

How about Mozambique or Zanzibar?

JoJothegerbil · 15/05/2024 08:03

We've been to Crete at the beginning of October before and temperatures were late 20s/early 30s. We stayed in Stalis and everywhere was still open and it was busy so no end of season vibe.

Oganesson118 · 15/05/2024 08:09

I love Turkey but wouldn’t go in October for guaranteed hot. It can be pretty rainy. Cyprus tends to be better and fit your bill in terms of culture, nice to wander and kid friendly.

I have a lot of experience in the UAE, and the Middle East in general - I was referring to the type of culture I know my husband appreciates and doesn't appreciate. Sorry if that didn't come across well.

my main concern about travelling to Sri Lanka if they were still in the depths of despair with lack of food and fuel and basic resources was simply not to add to the chaos. However, if the country is stabilising then I clearly haven't kept up with the news in that region as much as I'd hoped.
