Holiday advice - end of October

Hi there, could anyone recommend anywhere for an end of October week abroad please with two children. We are celebrating a big birthday and anniversary and would love to treat ourselves to a beach holiday with warm weather but I'm not sure where will still be warm enough to sunbathe at that time and we don't really want to go long haul if we can help it. Thanks

Canary Islands? We’ve done Lanzarote at the end of October for a few years and always had nice weather. Just need a jacket for the evening. Nowhere in Europe will be warm enough.

People can be snobby about Lanazarote but I like it. You just need to choose a nice resort.

We also did Marrakesh one year and that was warm (but a bit hectic!)

ShanghaiDiva · 09/05/2024 16:26

Cyprus?

cherryassam · 09/05/2024 16:27

The Canaries might be warm enough - would probably want somewhere with a heated pool though

Dubai or Oman would be my best bet though, not quite long haul but pretty likely to have lovely warm weather

TizerorFizz · 09/05/2024 18:47

If you just want a pool, Dubai would suit you. There's some other things to enjoy but it's mostly ultra modern. We went for a week when DDs were quite young but would not go back. Prefer the Caribbean.

We went to Cyprus for a week last year. Traveling on the 13th October. The weather was OK, rained a couple of times but the pools definitely got chillier by the end of the week.

Canaries will definitely be warm enough. Also Cyprus if you want pleasant rather than baking heat

Majorca (2 hours from Gatwick) is great in October, always in the first half, and with the new normal of global warming it's pretty good in the second half. You can sunbathe from 11am to 3pm with no need for factor 50, and the sea is still warm from the summer heat even if the pools are starting to cool down. The evenings are a bit fresh but it's "long-sleeved shirt" rather than "hoodie" temperatures.

However, there is a big "clunk" at the end of the month when a lot of places shut down for the winter. Can you be more precise about your dates and DC's ages?

cherryassam · 09/05/2024 20:34

Different people have different temps they want for a beach holiday - it would be useful to know whether mid twenties is plenty warm or if 30 plus is wanted. Some people really want that wall of heat when they step outside, for example.

NisekoWhistler · 09/05/2024 20:37

Malta has beautiful weather at that time

PrincessHoneysuckle · 09/05/2024 20:40

Turkey in Oct was hot enough to sunbathe every day

TeamGeriatric · 09/05/2024 21:50

It was warm in Malta in late March, we were there for Easter and people were in the sea (though not me) so would be perfect weather wise in late October and the sea would be much warmer. There are not so many beaches though.

Egypt

We're almost always in Southern Spain at this time and the weather is usually great but you can definitely be unlucky towards the end of October. The Canaries should be fab in October. Lanzarote is one of my happy places and where we go early /mid Dec and usually get fair weather even then.

OMGitsnotgood · 09/05/2024 23:47

Crete and Rhodes are usually lovely at that time of year (not all Greek islands are). They close down after the UK half term so you need to choose your timing.
Canaries as others have said.

We went to Turkey, Lanzarote and Cyprus end of October and in all cases we had at least one day of rain and chilly weather but on the other hand all other days it was mid to high 20s during the day.

When we arrived in Cyprus we were told the day rain was the first one in months, so it can really vary but you can't be 100% sure anymore that it will stay dry. We were near Paphos, people from DD's school were in Aya Napa and it was even more mixed on that side of the island.

Pools can be coolish already unless you are in there in the middle of the day in the sun.

Resorts do start to close down, so you need to look what they still offer and I would go for one near a larger town, not a tourist village.

Sardinia. Water warm. Air temp about 28/30. We went to alghero pre cold. I would suggest Olbia or Calieria w children

MoominPyjamas · 10/05/2024 07:37

We went to Croatia and it was hot enough and lovely but definitely end of season

whiteboardking · 10/05/2024 07:48

Useful ideas as I'm looking for the same. Love lanzarote but trying to look at new options

GettingStuffed · 10/05/2024 09:31

We've been to Cyprus at that time of year. It was warm enough to sunbathe but the pool was too cold to swim in. Evenings meant a jacket .

We're going on holiday at the start of October and the Carribbean is coming up at similar prices.

aprilshowers2015 · 10/05/2024 09:33

We went to Cape Verde in October and the weather was beautiful. Mid-high 20's. It was also turtle season so we saw the babies hatching and making their way to the sea.
We didn't venture out of the resort but there was a lot to do there so didn't need to!

minipie · 10/05/2024 10:33

We had lovely weather in Cyprus but it was mid rather than late Oct. Pool was freezing but the sea was really warm. We stayed at the Columbia beach resort which was lovely. There are a few places with heated pools eg the Almyra hotel.

MackerelTales · 10/05/2024 10:35

Turkey is still hot enough at the end of October, in the warmer areas anyway.

It's hurricane/storm season for the Caribbean so prices are lower.

It can work out, it can also mean you will spend time in a storm shelter or the holiday is cancelled on very short notice.

Timee · 10/05/2024 11:43

If you really want warm swimming / beach weather then you need to be as far south as the Canaries. It's an all year round destination but October is great time of year to go there.
Anywhere further north is a risk. I've had a cold wet week in Majorca in October, Cyprus may be warm but end of October is pushing it. Also it's end of season in the med and while British tour operators sell holidays the resorts have mostly wound down.
