How to ask for a seat belt extension?

112 replies

BusyCM · 05/05/2024 09:07

I'm really embarrassed so please no telling me I should lose weight....I know that.

But when we go on holiday this summer I am dreading needing a seat belt extension. When, who, where should I ask for this?

Thank you.

I imagine they get used on every single flight. I understand it's daunting having to ask, but this is so normal for cabin crew they'll be well versed in keeping everything discreet.

@BusyCM

Why the snipey comment?

I wasn't being rude or even replying to you, OP. I'm just fed up of being told by overweight people that 'you're lucky you're skinny'.

It isn't down to luck. Genetics play a part sometimes sure, but it'd quite annoying to be labelled 'lucky' when mine certainly wasn't luck.

If you're offended by that, that's on you.

I'm not offended. But this thread has nothing to do with how skinny you are or how hard you work. Yet somehow you've turned it around to that. Please stop. This is me simply asking for help with a practical issue, preferably without judgement about my failings in the weight department.

Really? Oh god this is far more humiliating than I expected.

I used to have to do it, and was never treated anything other than respectfully and with discretion by cabin crew.

BusyCM · 09/05/2024 13:33

Thank you for the wonderful advice and well wishes for my holiday. It's a much needed break with family and friends after a truly horrific event at the start of the year. I appreciate your kindness.

I think last time I just brazened it out as I was boarding and said "can I do the seatbelt extender ask of shame" and they smiled and brought me one. Yes it was cringe, but I owned the cringe and it felt less awful (if that makes sense).

This time we're flying with the kids and MIL who will make it a fucking huge THING unfortunately.

Greenturaco22 · 09/05/2024 13:41

I know it can feel a bit embarrassing but honestly it's not a big deal. You won't be the only one on the plane needing one. Just tell the cabin crew as you enter the plane and have your boarding card handy so you can tell them your seat number. Then relax and enjoy your flight and holiday ☺️

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 09/05/2024 13:44

My husband just asks when the flight attendants are finished getting everyone on board. Lots of people ask and it’s nothing to be embarrassed about. I’d be more ashamed for the fools giving unsolicited ‚kind advice‘. SMH

Have a lovely holiday!!

Jessforless · 09/05/2024 13:54

I would just bring a cardigan (planes are chilly anyway!) and put it over my lap if worried about drawing attention to the extension.

Don’t be embarrassed OP, cabin crew will see this all day long. Have a brilliant holiday, and don’t stress about this.

mummyh2016 · 09/05/2024 14:03

I used to be cabin crew. Either ask on boarding or when the crew come round to secure the cabin before takeoff. You don't even need to ask, if you just point at the belt they will know. It will be handed to you discreetly (at least I used to!). Then just leave it behind on your seat when you leave. They're bright coloured as they're the infant seatbelts. It's so common OP you don't need to be embarrassed, you won't be the only one needing one on the flight.

@BusyCM

Erm I think you've directed this to the wrong person.

Another poster made the comment about luck. Which is quite crass really when as I said it isn't down to luck in most cases. So I replied to that poster saying exactly that. I didn't derail the thread, I didn't make the first initial comment.

YouAreLiveOnTelevisionPleaseDoNotSwear · 09/05/2024 14:34

@BusyCM

I've also not made any comment about anything else, I've made no judgment or rude comments at all.

I think you're deflecting a bit.

As I said, another poster said being slim is down to luck. I just replied saying that it's not.

No big deal..

BusyCM · 09/05/2024 14:36

@YouAreLiveOnTelevisionPleaseDoNotSwear please stop. I really don't have the head space to be dealing with this. Thank you.

I mean this in the kindest, warmest way.
If you buy your own extender, yes it might mean you're not as embarrassed when you board the plane. But it will also mean you're 'comfortable' with the idea. So there's no incentive to think, ok, this year I will need one, but by next year's holiday I will have lost x pounds.

For this holiday, ask the cabin crew, they are very much used to it and it will be done discreetly. But, if you do want to lose weight, use this as the kicker to change.

You don't mean this kindly or warmly.
You're just fat-shaming the OP.

YorkNew · 09/05/2024 14:54

My friend is also dreading this, I travel a lot and she asked me to do a little research when I next flew, so I did.

Firsltly more people ask than I expected or at least I’d never noticed anyone asking before. On my flight a few people asked when they were already on their seats, I think if it was me I’d ask as I board.

Absolutely no one took any notice.

I also did a bit of googling for my friend and for example Tui seat belts are 46 inches long. My friend hasn’t measured herself yet to see if she thinks a regular one works for as it’s become a thing for her.

From my limited observations it looked like size 20 women (or looked around that size) didn’t seem to need one and for men it was harder to tell what size they were. One lady had quite big hips and bottom and her’s fitted .

BollockstoThis1 · 09/05/2024 16:08

OP you might not actually need an extender and could be worrying over nothing. I thought I might need one last year as I had put on weight during lockdown but didn’t actually need one and I was a definite size 22.

If you are bigger than a dress size 24 you may need one and if this is the case I would discreetly discuss this with the airline prior to flying and on the day if any spare seats on the plane you could ask at check in to be sat next to a spare seat as this also help you be and feel more comfortable.

Enjoy your holiday OP.

BusyCM · 09/05/2024 16:10

I'm a 20/22 but carry all my weight on my bottom half. Fingers crossed I don't buy if I do then so be it. I feel more prepared knowing what will happen etc.

*Nothing about your message is kind or warm. I said in my OP I don't need to be shamed and told to lose weight. I have gone through a very traumatic event this year, my weight has not and is not a priority. I wish to enjoy my family holiday without humiliation or embarrassment or indeed to have myself a 'kicker'.

Thank-you for the unsolicited advice. People like you can't help yourself, even when politely requested not to do this.*

Not sure what you expected after your OP

What was wrong with my OP?

OP posts:
FoodieToo · 09/05/2024 16:39

The OP specifically asked for advice on asking for the belt extender . She even said 'please no telling me to lose weight'. I don't know how much clearer she could be .

TheShellBeach · 09/05/2024 17:21

Not sure what you expected after your OP

Give it a rest.
Hmm

LIZS · 09/05/2024 17:37

Just press the call button when you are boarded and ask the cabin crew.

I don't understand the big deal?

Just ask the crew OP when you're boarding?

YouAreLiveOnTelevisionPleaseDoNotSwear · 09/05/2024 17:44

@BusyCM

I wasn't trying to achieve anything OP, I was simply replying to another poster about a comment they made.

I really don't know what you expected from this thread but there's no need to be so defensive. I wasn't even replying to you.
