How to ask for a seat belt extension?

112 replies

BusyCM · 05/05/2024 09:07

I'm really embarrassed so please no telling me I should lose weight....I know that.

But when we go on holiday this summer I am dreading needing a seat belt extension. When, who, where should I ask for this?

Thank you.

I had no idea you could do this, I'll take a look!

You can't use them. I fell foul of this as I was mortified at needing one so thought I'd buy my own to save embarrassment. they don't fit CAA standards abd they won't let you use them. EasyJet don't anyway, having worn one all flight some hyper observant member of cabin crew said I couldn't use it abd I'd have to have their humongous long one in bright red. Which was far too long.

it depends on the flight too, some craft are fine. They all have a standard belt length but if the belt frays they usually get cut down hence some being fine and some short.

As you get on and the cabin crew person at the door smiles at you, say "Hi, I'm in 17B and I think I'll need an extender". They will say "No problem at all" and bring it to you discreetly. Remember that you don't have to buckle your seat belt as soon as you sit down, so even if you are last on board there will be plenty of time for them to do this.

I mean this in the kindest, warmest way.
If you buy your own extender, yes it might mean you're not as embarrassed when you board the plane. But it will also mean you're 'comfortable' with the idea. So there's no incentive to think, ok, this year I will need one, but by next year's holiday I will have lost x pounds.

For this holiday, ask the cabin crew, they are very much used to it and it will be done discreetly. But, if you do want to lose weight, use this as the kicker to change.

@BestNewsSinceLePouDied

theres nothing kind or warm about your judgemental post.

The OP doesn't need your judgement nor do many others of us. You can't have my metabolic issues that I now have due to a severe illness & you can get theight gain that comes with it, then when you've lost the extra person you gained to become 50kg again you can dribble on about 'incentives'. I don't need a fucking incentive - I need a body that doesn't act all kinds dysfunctionally!

if you're slim your lucky, that's all. You're most definitely not a better person.

@BusyCM apart from the occasional judgemental person, it's all ok the flight. Just ask for one. Don't buy one as many airlines don't like you using them as they haven't safety checked them and for your own safety you shouldn't use them. Just get one as you board, if you end up not needing it, you can just hand it back.

the seat belts get trimmed for various reasons and so are not a standard length so there no knowing when your above a 'slim' size whether you'll need one or not.

have a great holiday!!

You think using the accessibility service is "humiliating" ?

@RobBeckettsGiantTeeth

No, she thinks using it because she has gained weigh is humiliating

MalibuBarbieDreamHouse · 08/05/2024 01:03

Hi! I’ve watched videos on TikTok where people ask for them, it’s always very discrete and not a problem to organise.

Have a great time 😎

They knew that, they were just trying to start an argument which is why I didn't reply.

I bought one on Amazon to take with me. Turns out I didn't actually need it though.

BusyCM · 08/05/2024 06:24

Thank you all. I won't buy one from amazon, I'll see it I definitely need one first and then just ask.

A little daunting that they seem to be bright orange! Doesn't seem to be a reason for that except to draw attention but there's nothing I can do about that so I'll suck it up.

OP, just be aware that if you book an extra leg room seat on the wing they may ask you to move. I had this happen to me, the reason I was given was that the extender could create a trip hazard in an emergency.

I haven't booked extra leg room.

I usually just discreetly ask a steward as they are doing checks after the safety briefing, they just go and get one and pass it over

I travel a lot and it has never been an issue. Also, many belts are longer than you expect, so you might be OK

Don't be embarrassed, it's not a big deal x

The belts are also used as child belts, so I think they are red so that they can be easily seen for that reason

I don't even worry about it any more - I saw 6 people ask for them

At the end of the day, I just want to be comfortable for the flight

KnickerlessParsons · 08/05/2024 06:42

"Could I have a seat belt extension please?" to the cabin crew should do it.
They get asked on every flight. It's not a big deal

springtome · 08/05/2024 06:43

You can buy them off Amazon quite cheaply. My friend has one and she finds it much easier to bring her own rather than ask.

For info- Seat belts provided by the airline are built to conform with regulatory standards and are inspected at routine intervals….You’ve no guarantee with anything you buy off Amazon and keep at home (regardless of whatever markings have been put on it).

As a result some airlines ban BYO and if the cabin crew spot you using one they may insist you remove it and use one they provide.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 08/05/2024 07:25

No one rings an airline for a seat belt extension.

Just ask the cabin crew. I used to have them wrapped up small and in the fist of my hand, I wasn’t swinging that around the cabin.

MoonWoman69 · 08/05/2024 07:31

Just to reassure you OP, I have varied in weight from 22 to 24 stone and when I've flown, I haven't needed one! At my heaviest, I did ask for one and then handed it back! This was Jet2 and I found their belts very generous ❤

I need one for nearly every flight. I also wear a huge scarf/pashmina when I fly, handy when it gets chilly and handy for hiding the orange belt 😉. However, no one will notice especially if you are sat with your family/friends.

@YeahComeOnThen

Besides the point of the post but it isn't all down to luck. Mines down to good diet and exercise and hard work.

I used to ask as I got on the plane and they were always lovely x
Eventually I bought my own. Honestly don't feel embarrassed about it and enjoy your holiday zxx

Just ask once onboard if required, different plane models have different lengths as standard

murasaki · 08/05/2024 12:16

My relative always asks for one for her cello which has a seat next to her, they're used for lots of reasons. You'll be fine just asking. Enjoy your holiday.

YouAreLiveOnTelevisionPleaseDoNotSwear · 09/05/2024 13:16

@BusyCM

Why the snipey comment?

I wasn't being rude or even replying to you, OP. I'm just fed up of being told by overweight people that 'you're lucky you're skinny'.

It isn't down to luck. Genetics play a part sometimes sure, but it'd quite annoying to be labelled 'lucky' when mine certainly wasn't luck.

If you're offended by that, that's on you.
