How to ask for a seat belt extension?

BusyCM · 05/05/2024 09:07

I'm really embarrassed so please no telling me I should lose weight....I know that.

But when we go on holiday this summer I am dreading needing a seat belt extension. When, who, where should I ask for this?

Thank you.

Don't buy one, all airlines use their own. They will bring you one. They know who needs one. Don't give it another thought!

Elieza · 05/05/2024 10:33

I don't know why two of you are pounding in BestNew's post.

She only said 'if' in her last paragraph. She was only trying to be helpful.

FoodieToo · 05/05/2024 10:35

You have strange ideas about ‘helpful’ !!

ResultsMayVary · 05/05/2024 10:35

The length of each seatbelt can be different because if they fray they can just cut a section off. So whether if fits or not can be the luck of the draw.

I hope you have a lovely holiday.

toastofthetown · 05/05/2024 10:35

I wouldn’t use an extender from Amazon. The extenders provided by the airline will be safety tested. The extenders on Amazon will almost certainly not be, and judging by the quality of some of the cheap no-brand crap I’ve ordered from Amazon, I wouldn’t trust it with anything safety critical. If my nail file
falls apart after a couple of uses then fine. If a seatbelt fails in a crash situation then OP is not only a danger to heself by being unrestrained but becomes a projectile potentially harming other people on board.

Haveli · 05/05/2024 10:36

Had to ask for one last summer as DD on my lap, its no big deal at all you just grab the attention of the nearest cabin crew member once you are sat down, they are used to it and definitely won't make it into an issue. You 100% won't be the only one. Enjoy your holiday and don't spend another single second fretting about it! 😊

That’s interesting. (Sounds sarcastic, wasn’t!)

Yes I've read this before, thank you.

If it makes you feel any better about asking, the extension belts are not only used for overweight people. They are also used for people with babies and I've once seen them used for a large musical instrument in a case!
The crew don't bat an eye when asked for one. It's part of their everyday job.

redroseflyer · 05/05/2024 10:59

I'm cabin crew 😊 Please don't feel anxious or embarrassed! We give out extension seatbelts all day long. Just ask one of the crew as you board and let them know your seat number. They'll bring one over discreetly. Also don't buy one of your own, you have to use one we provide that fits safety standards for the aircraft you're on. Hope this helps! But please don't stress and I hope you have a lovely trip x

liquoricetorpedoes · 05/05/2024 12:05

Please don’t stress about it. I sometimes need one, sometimes don’t so I get to my seat, try it and then just ask when cabin crew are passing. It’s always been handled really discreetly and with no fuss. Have a lovely holiday.

Really? Oh god this is far more humiliating than I expected.

You think using the accessibility service is "humiliating" ?

SarahB88 · 05/05/2024 12:18

I needed one on an easy jet flight earlier in my pregnancy. I’m fairly pear shaped anyway but have become wider so couldn’t get the standard belt to fasten comfortably. I just pressed the call button and the lovely cabin crew lady took one over, no fuss. I didn’t look visibly pregnant at that point either, no questions asked. Never needed one on BA or Logan Air though even right up to 28 weeks when I stopped travelling for work so I’d say sit in the seat first and see if the belt fits you. If it does, great, if not cabin crew will get you an extender. They do it all the time and I’m sure they’ll be completely professional about it.

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 05/05/2024 12:19

I've been anything from a 16-24 and haven't needed an extender but that's because I have no arse and all the weight is on my belly. Whenever I've been on a plane the cabin crew have just discreetly handed the extender to anyone they see might need one as they are going up and down the aisle doing preflight checks.

BreakfastAtMimis · 05/05/2024 12:23

DaisyDonaldDucks · 05/05/2024 09:10

I don't know for sure but I'd ring up the airline and ask for one. Using the number for accessibility arrangements.

Don't be daft. You don't need accessibility arrangements for being overweight.

Basically be able it’s not what OP wants to hear. Even though she will know it is true.
MH problems can have a huge impact on weight and she probably doesn’t have the energy to start the journey to get to the stage where she needs the extender. So she has my sympathy even though I agree with BestNews.

No. You don't need to do it in advance, haha!
They cabin crew have plenty on board and will give you one.

Ask as you enter the plane, or quietly grab there attention once you're seated.

DaisyDonaldDucks · 05/05/2024 14:00

Sorry for my poor advice earlier. I use access arrangements when I fly so phoning didn't seem a big deal to me but I'm glad there's a simpler solution. Have a lovely holiday OP!

WhatDaPoint · 05/05/2024 14:30

I wouldn't buy one. Just ask. It's not unusual and no one cares. If you act all embarrassed then you will draw attention to it.

Hope you have a great holiday.

charabang · 06/05/2024 14:46

I am big lass and carry all my weight on my bottom. Honestly it's so easy to catch a member of crew as they're doing the rounds. They really don't bat an eyelid. Others passengers wont even notice as they are too bothered about getting their bags in the overhead lockers.

Psiren · 06/05/2024 14:57

I always ask as I board the plane. Sometimes they pass me one straight away and sometimes they bring it to my seat. Hope you have a lovely holiday.

Butternutsqoosh · 06/05/2024 15:21

Hi - I'm cabin crew and I can assure you that we get asked all the time so it's not a big deal to us. Just ask the crew member nearest your seat - it will be done discreetly! Please don't buy your own as it won't be to the airline's safety standards, we have plenty on board - enjoy your holiday!

It was a while ago but I feel like they just gave one of those infant seat belts to the guy sitting next to me who needed a seat belt extender. So rather than looping it round a small child it was just clipped on to the existing seat belt. They should have plenty onboard.
