What is unmissable in Rome?

Hello,

I have a day trip, coming up in Rome in late May, and wondering what you would count as being unmissable ? I'll be there from about nine in the morning, until about eight in the evening, so a good nice long day to do things.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, searching attractions in Rome, brings up a lot of websites, and providers. But it would be lovely to have some personal feedback.

Colosseum and gelato and coffee

For me, it would be the Colosseum, forum and Pantheon. Coffee and pistachio cream cannoli from Saint Eustachio coffee bar near Pantheon. Trevi fountain lit up at night was wonderful.

Alternative less busy coffee stop is La Casa del Caffè Tazza d'Oro. Grab coffee and enormous cream filled donut thing 😊 then enjoy both perched on edge of monument opposite pantheon and just Take It All In!

The Forum and the Colisseum imo. Spanish steps and Trevi fountain are okay but nothing in comparison.

If you are religious, then the Vatican instead.

And the ice cream and the local pasta dishes are out of this world.

I LOVE Rome. Everywhere is great. You will be able to see plenty in one day as it's all walkable and close together. I wouldn't race about too much especially if it's hot. The main thing is to enjoy yourself. You are probably going to want to come back again anyway.
I'd try and avoid using the taxis - they are dangerous- they speed, swerve and text on their cell phones. We have had it happen twice so won't use them now

When would people say is a good time to visit Rome, weather wise and crowds wise? Sorry to jump on your thread @ManchesterBeatrice but have been planning a Rome mini break and this thread has been great.

Not between June and August. Too hot.

It's totally fine, super happy for the thread to be a resource and conversation for other questions 🥰

@Theoldbird
We went late September last year and weather was not too hot.

Also re the Trevi fountain, we got there about 10.30 and they were cleaning it. It wasnt turned on until 11am. We would love to do the underground tour.

You don't need sun for a city, that's for the beach! Rome is rammed all year round now. I was watching a Youtube clip recently and in mid November the Trevi was jammed at 7am. 😮

I'm hoping to go early December. OK I know the days will be shorter, but hopefully the crowds will not be as hectic. I prefer cooler weather, it makes walking for miles a bit easier than in the heat. I have a rainjacket too!

Great thread.

October we have always found to be lovely. Early morning is still chilly so you need a light jacket but by lunchtime if the suns out it's lovely

This was taken before 9am ... just gorgeous ❤️

The Baths of Caracalla are stupendous and much less busy than other sites , and for people staying longer take the train out to Ostia.
