What is unmissable in Rome?

Hello,

I have a day trip, coming up in Rome in late May, and wondering what you would count as being unmissable ? I'll be there from about nine in the morning, until about eight in the evening, so a good nice long day to do things.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, searching attractions in Rome, brings up a lot of websites, and providers. But it would be lovely to have some personal feedback.

If you like tiramisu this place is popular with instagrammers.

And a few doors down is a little place that sells the best italian pork rolls.

Both near the Pantheon and Plaza Navorrone

RampantIvy · 24/04/2024 18:49

I agree that the Pantheon would be top of the list. The Colosseum and Palatine Hill next.

The Vatican is so huge and would take up so much of the day that you would struggle to get much else in. I also felt underwhelmed seeing the Sistine Chapel after shuffling through the beautifully ornate galleries. Shuffling because it is so crowded that you have to walk at the same pace as the crowd.

I would have a gander at the Spansih Step and the Trevi Fountain because you only need about 5 minutes there.

The Colosseum and the Forum, then just wander.

The open bus tour is ok but doesn't get into any central bits, and hangs around for ages at the railway station 🙄

Trevi fountain and Spanish steps ok but very busy. Same with Piazza Navona.

Queues for the Pantheon were crazy when we were there in Easter - tickets sold out for each day.

Buy Colosseum tickets ahead on coopculture website to save time queueing.

RemarkablyBrightCreature · 24/04/2024 20:39

Colosseum for definite! Then mooch about.

i have to say I was utterly underwhelmed by the Vatican but that might just be me 😬

MaxandMeg · 24/04/2024 21:00

I love Rome but hated the Colosseum. I had to leave as the atmosphere was oppressing me. So much suffering in one place. The Pantheon is stupendous. There's a fabulous Bernini elephant obelisk close by too. The Piazza Navona is wonderful (also close) with more incredible Bernini. The Capitoline Hill with its amazing Michelangelo paving and the statue of Marcus Aurelius. You get a good view over the Forum from here too.

Can anyone recommend somewhere to stay in Rome. The options are endless and confusing.

HopelessAndWondering · 24/04/2024 21:05

The Pantheon

RainBow725 · 24/04/2024 21:24

The Pantheon and the Forum for me too. The Vatican is really boring IMHO! The Colloseum is good but you can kind of appreciate it from the outside while you're seeing the Forum.

And the ice cream shop just near it!

Last time we visited a few years back we went with Rome Lofts who were excellent.

We ended up so central and the great thing was that if we needed a breather we could head back for an hour or take time to gRey showered for dinner somewhere close. The organisers also arranged very good value private taxi transfers for us too. We were about a 2 minute walk from Pantheon so plenty of coffee and pastry options for a quick breakfast before heading out.
Kept in touch whilst there by WhatsApp.

Definitely recommend

Trevi Fountain for me - loved it

Roryhon · 24/04/2024 22:06

If you only have one day I’d spend it wandering around. Rome is fairly small and walkable. As someone previously said, start at the Colloseum, walk up the “typewriter” Victor Emmanuel building and look down into the Roman Forum, you can see quite a lot. Go past the Spanish steps and Trevi fountain, the Pantheon and then through Piazza Narvona and castelo del’ angelo and finish at The Vatican. Personally I don’t think you’d have time to do the Sistine Chapel - I found it completely underwhelming anyway. If anything just go into the actual Vatican itself. The roof view is worth it. Then wander back through Travestere. This way you’ve had a look at a lot of the major attractions and you know what you’d choose to see next time you visit.

Ive been to Rome many times, but if I was to choose spending the day doing just one thing I’d choose the Roman forum. I love the Trevi fountain too.

OMGitsnotgood · 24/04/2024 22:14

I'm always amazed by how many people have been to the Colosseum but not the Forum. The Colosseum is definitely worth a visit but the Forum is also unmissable. The Trevi fountain was under repair last time we were there but I found it worth a visit the first time I went

RampantIvy · 24/04/2024 22:25

I don't remember paying to see the Pantheon.
It was October when we went, and raining on the day we visited the Pantheon. There were no queues.

Librarybooker · 24/04/2024 22:27

Unmissable - St Peter’s, The Vatican (mainly for the Sistine Chapel), The Catacombs, The Forum, The Trevi Fountain.

Highly recommended - St Paul’s outside the walls, a walk that takes in some of the fountains (we have an old guidebook that has one), look up churches with amazing paintings and triptych etc.

Less amazing than you might think - The Coliseum (lovely in the evening light and scale, but not my fave), The Pantheon ( just smaller than I thought)

There was around a half hour queue for the Pantheon (without tickets) when we were there a couple of weeks ago. Cost around 5 euro to go in.

Can’t remember the name of the place but a bit macabre; a crypt of a little church where bones of people (possibly monks) that were disinterred because of space are arrange in patterns up the walls and ceilings.

Stay in the Trastevere. It is buzzy and lively with amazing food and drinks. You can stay out late and then crash. We had an AirBnB in the heart of it. Will go back in a heartbeat.

Ioverslept · 24/04/2024 23:58

Unmissable: Colosseum, Forum, Pantheon, Trevi fountain, Piazza Navona.
Desirable: Vittorio Emanuele mausoleum views from terrace, Trastevere, Spanish steps, St Peter's square in Vatican.

There was a great ice cream shop round the corner from the pantheon

I think this might be it. I was in Rome recently and my Roman friend took me here.
