I have one that’s just slightly larger.
How strict are they?
Have you ever been asked to put one in the hold?

Thanks

We flew to Rome and back this week with Ryanair and I saw nobody's bags being checked, either leg. Didn't even notice a cage for checking bag sizes.

How dare fat people fly! They should stay at home and not get in the way on planes.

Bjorkdidit · 07/04/2024 12:26

But you then have the delays at the airport waiting for luggage collection. We've just done cabin luggage only and it's so good being able to just walk straight off the plane and on with your next journey

But it's rarely very long and it means you don't have to drag a wheelie case around the airport, fight with others for overhead locker space, restrict yourself to the skinny version that Ryanair allow or comply with the liquid limits so swings and roundabouts.

If there's more than one person travelling it's probably cheaper to share a hold case than pay for large cabin bag per person.

Bluewallss · 07/04/2024 12:31

I’ve flown to Dublin, Copenhagen, Ibiza and Milan with Ryanair. I’ve never been checked or seen anyone checked, despite myself normally carrying a bag which is a little too large. The airports I’ve flown from are Manchester, Brum and East Mids.

I think it’s truly luck of the drawer.

TizerorFizz · 07/04/2024 12:53

@OutOfTheHouse If airlines are worried about extra weight of a slightly too big bag, why would they not worry about 18 stone people? Makes no sense. Not saying anyone should be left out but if weight matters, it’s people who weigh more than a 2cm bigger bag! So weight policies might come in.

Bjorkdidit · 07/04/2024 13:03

I thought the size limits were for the overhead lockers? We went on Easyjet and it was terrible, far worse than anything we've experienced with Ryanair or Jet2.

Our seats were near the front but because we got on nearly last, our bags ended up right at the back because that's where the cabin crew had to put them.

Someone had put a massive duffle bag in the locker above our seats, that must have been at least 80 cm long, yet was allowed in the cabin.

That's the kind of person who deserves to be charged to have it in the hold, not someone who is slightly over (the sizing gauges are actually a little bit bigger than the limit, so you should be fine about the odd cm or two, but obviously not something nearly 50% bigger).

GrimDamnFanjo · 07/04/2024 13:18

I have compliant bags. I try to wear my bulkiest items. I have a small flat crossbody which if noticed could be packed into the compliant bag.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 07/04/2024 13:26

We're flying Aer Lingus later in the year. We've paid for large cabin bags but perversely they have to go in the hold or we have to pay more to have them in the cabin. The whole point is to have them in the cabin with us, especially for the return leg to LHR 🙄

Incidentally @TizerorFizz, you may well have a valid point regarding heavier passengers but your language is really quite offensive.

It’s not the weight though. It’s what fits in overhead lockers. Three bags of the specified size will fit next to each other in the locker. Bigger and they won’t.

I don't understand the constant bashing of Ryanair.
It is what it is and rules are very clear.
I fly with them multiple times a year.
You get what you pay for.
In all the years of flying with them I've never had an issue.
They're not a luxury airline, they're basically a bus that flies.
And IME a very efficient way of getting from A to B.
Functional.

Exactly.

The rules are very clear. If you don’t like it don’t fly with them. I see them like getting a bus or train. My last flight was an hour and a half. No real difference to a train journey.

TizerorFizz · 07/04/2024 15:21

Since when is it offensive to say overweight people weigh more? Yes, it’s about weight distribution and keeping weight down to save fuel, as well as making money! Who wants to be squished due to a huge passenger next to them? Airlines have had to pay out damages to swished travellers who suffered damage before now. I am always fearful of this! Especially long haul so we now go business. There’s always the dilemma between rights and responsibilities.

"Larger people barge to the front don't they"

"Fatties"

I don't think that you can assume the behaviour of all passengers based on body shape/size!

You called them fatties. That’s offensive.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 07/04/2024 16:44

@TizerorFizz How nasty.

TizerorFizz · 07/04/2024 17:15

Yup. Thats the word many use. Frankly I don’t care because I fly business but most do not want an uncomfortable travelling position because of fellow travellers. So is overweight ok with MN? Maybe naming and shaming is what’s needed! Instead we just pretend there’s no problem when there is.

MadeForThis · 07/04/2024 17:35

Does the size restrictions apply to the 10kg checked into the hold bag too?

So you pay to barge to the front?

I sat next to a very very large man on my last flight. He was a giant of a man but lovely, caring, a nurse. I'd take the neck ache I got from sitting next to him over having to deal with someone as rude and uncaring as you any day. Fortunately I never fly business so I won't be forced to. I'll stay in with the Great Unwashed.

teaandlotusbiscoff · 07/04/2024 18:24

I’ve not had mine checked but did see someone on an EasyJet flight have to put their bag in the hold. I have though taken an under-seat bag that was probably over the limit and wasn’t asked to measure that

RefreshingCandour · 08/04/2024 07:30

I think perhaps @TizerorFizz DD needs to grow a pair. Or perhaps mummy & daddy will pay for her to travel business so she never has to go through that horrific experience again. Must have been appalling. 🙄

Crashingly crass btw to go on about business travel on a thread about Ryanair luggage allowances. Read the room, love.

Wow. So you have a problem with fat people. What about disabled people? They get to go on first often too, and their wheelchair takes up space and weight. Shall we use offensive terms for them too?

Good job all those nasty fatties are poor so they don’t sit next to you in business class isn’t it.

Mylobsterteapot · 08/04/2024 07:51

My suitcase fitted in the bag check cage, but on the way down the stairs to the plane, the handle broke so it couldn’t be pushed in. I loaded it into the bin, and just told the person next to me to put their bag over the handle. The cases fitted in normally, just one bag was slightly wonky. The cabin crew pulled my out, made a huge fuss and wouldn’t listen to me saying it broke as I was getting on the plane. They made me check it in.

SignoraVolpe · 08/04/2024 08:07

I fly Ryanair regularly from France to UK return.
I average £21.99 a fare.
How people paying so little can complain is beyond me.
You are essentially getting the equivalent of a bus.
I have the Ryanair app off to a fine art.
I never pay anything above the actual fare.
I would sooner take a small rucksack and v. few clothes.
About 4 hours before I'm flying I look at the paid seat options and can see how many premium seats are empty.
When I get on the plane I make sure I'm last and head for any empty seat that's better than my allocated seat.
Last flight I was 18E and I sat in 3C.

Remember you can order toiletries etc to be delivered to Boots in the departure lounge and have them as a carry on.

I buy a check in bag now. I'm completely over having to shove everything in a small rucksack and dress like a tramp for three days with no shampoo.

I find it's a lot better to be able to just get off the plane without trying to find your cabin bag, and wander out to pick up your bag off the baggage carousel, where it's often there already when you get there, and frequently one of only about six so not hard to spot. I've never waited any time at all.

And I can wear different shoes and wash my hair. Yay.

BigMandyHarris · 08/04/2024 13:28

Thanks again.
I’m returning the slightly larger case and reordering the smaller one. I fly Ryanair as they fly from and where I want to go.

I don’t check bags into the hold unless I’m flying long haul and it’s free then anyway
