I have one that’s just slightly larger.
How strict are they?
Have you ever been asked to put one in the hold?

Thanks

Strict!!

dementedpixie · 06/04/2024 14:58

How much bigger?
Is it soft or hard shelled?

Anameisaname · 06/04/2024 14:58

I flew with Ryanaor last week and they checked every single person's bag as we went through the gate.

NashvilleQueen · 06/04/2024 14:58

We have never had any problem at all but I have seen someone asked to fit it into a measuring box at the gate and be told it was too big. I think if it's a squishy bag then you're much more likely to get through.

PotatoPudding · 06/04/2024 15:00

It’s luck of the draw. I have seen plenty of people been made to pay to put their bag in the hold

pontipinemum · 06/04/2024 15:01

If its hard or soft will make a difference.

MiltonNorthern · 06/04/2024 15:04

Very strict. We saw a woman who had a tiny wheely suitcase be charged €45 to check hers in at the gate. Don't risk it.

Mumsntfan1 · 06/04/2024 15:15

It must be a soft bag and not so full that it won't fit in the baggage checker. So the bag can be bigger if not full. If it's a hard case and won't fit you'll have to pay.

OutOfTheHouse · 06/04/2024 15:17

I think it depends on where you are going. I flew Ryanair yesterday but from a city that isn’t really a holiday destination. They didn’t look at a single bag.

TizerorFizz · 06/04/2024 15:23

If you are nearly last on they will take the bag if it’s just a little too big. I would stick to the correct size but get an earlier boarding seat.

AmaryllisChorus · 06/04/2024 15:24

Very strict. If it is soft and squashes down into the bag-size checker, that's fine. But have seen them refuse people with hard shell carry-ons just a tiny bit too big, and make them put them in the hold.

Did Manchester-Verona last weekend, full flight. Didn't see any bag checking going on. They did make everyone put their smaller bag under the seat.

BigMandyHarris · 06/04/2024 18:54

Thanks
i have flown with them loads and never been made to put in the bag checker. The bag I have is 55x40x23 - so all correct except for just over an inch (3cms) deeper.

Every single other airline would take it fine

We watched a lady leave and remove the wheels on her case to avoid paying. She kept arguing it’s only a bit too big to which the response was - so it’s too big then. There was no give.

Sorry yes. It’s 55x40x20cm not 50cm.
It’s the 20cm I’m slightly over though

Yes but Ryanair isn't every other airline!

Soft or hard though? Can you squash it in?

dementedpixie · 06/04/2024 19:02

Is it soft or hard?
Soft bags can be squashed

BigMandyHarris · 06/04/2024 19:04

It’s a hard case, I’ve had deeper before but soft and no issues.

Yes @MiltonNorthern Its just frustrating to have to revolve a smaller case around one airline when I fly a lot with others.

OP posts:
BigMandyHarris · 06/04/2024 19:06

I think I will need to return this case and order another. It certainly limits your choice and is frustrating when it may never actually be checked. It’s a big investment though better to be safe

CleftChin · 06/04/2024 19:08

When we flew at half term I left my suitcase which sounds the same as yours - one dimension about 3cm over - it's a soft samsonite) and used rucksacks because I didn't know how strict they'd be, only to have them check no-body, and people definitely had bags too big.

Flight was full both ways too - and I'd booked the luggage for all 3 of us because I was worried and only actually needed one spot of in the end.

So I think you just take your chances.

If I was flying ryanair a lot I'd get on Amazon and buy the exact right size bags I think.

Brandnewskytohangyourstarsupon · 06/04/2024 19:10

Mine was soft.
They walked the queue picking out people with bags, I got charged.
They are hawk eyed and super strict.

Once on board, they went through every overhead, pulling out bags and shouting out “who’s is this!!?”
Once the owner was located it was unceremoniously given to the owner who was told to put it under the seat in front.
Zero tolerance and very little politeness!

The seat was filthy with caked in food, I couldn’t see out of the window due to the filthy smeared food all over it.

I will NEVER ever fly with Ryanair again.

InTheRainOnATrain · 06/04/2024 19:12

I took a slightly too large samonsite and got away with it on both legs. Unlikely to ever fly RA again anytime soon so figured it wasn’t worth buying another bag specially so why not chance it and if caught I wouldn’t have argued and would have paid up. But thankfully all fine!
