I have one that’s just slightly larger.
How strict are they?
Have you ever been asked to put one in the hold?

Thanks

I flew this week with Ryanair from Italy. The woman made me, despite being thesame bag I'd flown in with, empty and remove stuff to make it fit perfectly into the bag checker thing, which it obviously had going in and I hadn't really checked going out.
Anyway, she decide it was not good enough so made me empty it and leave some stuff. Fine. But when I said OK I'm leaving it here she said oh no you can't leave it here, you have to take it with you so I ended you taking more stuff than I entered with due to carrying stuff I'd taken out my bag.
In short it's a money making scam. Think of every way you can to get round it.

Don’t fly Ryanair. It’s cheaper to buy a compliant bag than their hold fees. Or fly with another airline. We flew with RA once, never again. We all know their reputation.

DD has found with Easy Jet that they let families on with rucksacks (huge men!) and cases but if you are nearer the end of the queue they want you to pay if you are 1cm over. DD is very slim and half the weight of many men. Total weight should matter more!

Or just accept that when you book Ryanair they are VERY clear on their dimensions and if your bag exceeds that.... book a hold bag or book a cabin carryon and factor that into your price comparison!
I'll say one thing for Ryanair they are very clear on their rules!

TizerorFizz · 06/04/2024 20:25

Yes but the owner is a shark! I don’t fly with RA. Nor EJ. I agree rules are clear but staff don’t follow them all the time. Neither do EJ staff. DDs bag was ok on way out. It was squishy but she is tiny!

That’s fair enough. However Ryanair opened up affordable air travel for the majority of its users and while their rules are get quick money makers, without them many would not be able to travel so frequently.

And before the climate change cohort declare that would be a good thing, no it isn’t. Those who can afford it will still fly. All it would do is disadvantage the less well off.

TizerorFizz · 06/04/2024 22:20

@Icehockeyflowers Actually Laker did that. Maybe you don’t remember him?

ArlaJay · 06/04/2024 22:34

We were asked to put our each of our cases into the ‘bag checker metal frame’ thingy.

Being slightly too big ( and panicked) my DS rammed it into the frame, so hard that I thought it was going to go through the first floor of the airport.

Yes, hooray, he got it in…it fits…no charge…

Except he couldn't get the sodding case back out….

How much do Ryanair charge to load a case, complete with ‘bag checker metal frame’ thingy into the hold???….😂

They finished in 1982? Not much good to people nowadays.

specialk9 · 06/04/2024 22:42

I wouldn't risk it if you're not happy paying the charge at the gate.

Saying that, we fly regularly with Ryanair (3x a year, always same route STN-ALC) and they have never checked our bags !

candycane222 · 06/04/2024 22:57

@ArlaJay 😂😂

Recently flew Ryanair - would have paid for a cabin bag between us but I could not make head or tail of the fees on the return flight (different carrier, Vueling, their website is shit!) so just used a little day pack, tied in with a strap..even crammed spare shoes in there. lipstick size deodorant, book selected at duty free as no room for one in bag,.etc). Lucky it was cold when we flew so I could wear three tops at once!

Didn't see anyone check any bags at all..was perversely irritated as I had gone to such massive effort 😁

SallyWD · 06/04/2024 22:58

We did a Ryanair flight last week. We all had rucksacks around those dimensions but slightly bigger (a few cm bigger). No one looked or checked or said anything. We just walked straight on without a problem. Our rucksacks were sift so could be squashed down but I really don't think anyone took any notice.

TravellingSpoon · 07/04/2024 08:43

Came back from Krakow last year and a man was having an absolute hissy fit as his bag wouldn't fit in the metal bag checker.

I cant get myself worked up with all the ryanair hate. They make the charges and rules very clear. If you don't like it, don't book.

PorcupineSpongeTeeth · 07/04/2024 08:53

We flew with them last week and they were really tight on it. It was a horrible experience, we were yelled at and talked to like idiots, despite our bags fitting. They were doing the checks right before take off, so it was packed, huge queues, irate people, it was massively stressful, and my autistic child was in tears as they thought we weren't going to be able to go on holiday. We said we'd never fly with them again (but a bit like childbirth, we'll probably forget and do it all again!)

It depends greatly on whether the flight is full and how strict they're being on the day and you won't know this advance. I bought a case of exactly the right dimensions that I use if I just want to take cabin luggage and it wasn't expensive. Personally, I wouldn't risk it with Ryanair and don't wait to board either - get in the line if you have cabin baggage - because once they judge the overhead bins to be full they just check everyone's luggage after that point.

But everyone know the rules before they book🤷‍♀️….. I travel loads with them..,,always the cheapest….travel from both my local airports..l.,always land on time,…and I bought a bag I know is compliant …. Simples

mitogoshi · 07/04/2024 10:29

I've never been checked at Bristol but was every time at stansted

RefreshingCandour · 07/04/2024 10:31

Lol as a travel agent in the 80s I can tell you that Laker in no way compares to RyanAir and EasyJet. They only flew LGW-NYC!!!

Easyjet and Ryanair have totally changed the face of travel for those without billions.

mitogoshi · 07/04/2024 10:33

Ps these days we pay for a hold bag to share rather than paying for the wheelie cases each, makes boarding so much easier

Movinghouseatlast · 07/04/2024 10:38

I have flown a lot ( twice a week at one stage) and I have seen people on every budget airline I've been on be charged to put their bag in the hold if its an inch too big.

I've seen some spectacular temper tantrums about it. One time a man who had been charged marched up and down the aisle demanding the crew measure other people's bags as he thought they were as big as his. That was Easyjet.

Caspianberg · 07/04/2024 10:42

I think Ryanair is fine. Yes they charge loads for luggage, but it’s not exactly hidden. And it’s still cheaper than flighing BA half the time who ‘include luggage for free’ but it’s not free when the flight is £200+ more than Ryanair.

Plus for us We can often fly Ryanair from local airport which is 50mins drive, v 2hr drive to next airport for ba/ easyJet, so if the times work it is convenient.

I just book the luggage I need, and don’t take larger bags than allowed. I have Ryanair in few weeks and will take x2 checked cases (paid extra) and Ds car seat in bag (free). I have then x1 larger overhead bag (paid extra), that I will take Ds hand luggage pram in, then we can take the free x3 under seat bags if needed (will probably just take dh and I bag, not Ds). All of this cost including return flights for 3 cost €460 v BA/ EasyJet same day flights costed €950. It’s a no brainer

I flew Ryanair last week and not one bag was checked. To my eye, most seemed to fit the requirements though.

You said Laker opened up air travel for the majority of its users, just here, in this quote.

Which it didn’t, only for people flying to New York, which I’m sure you realise is a teeny weeny percentage of travellers.

I’d hate to have to travel from Heathrow, but each to their own, I suppose. My experience of economy in the last 10 years is that EasyJet is far superior to British Airways. And many other supposed “superior” old style scheduled airlines.
