We were going to stay in the uk this year as money is tight but every time we go away in the uk for a hoilday it bloody rains!

so we are looking at going to Menorca, we have never been but are looking for a quiet. family friendly place to stay by a beach with a swimming pool.

Anyone any ideas please?

Oh & which part is the nicest to stay in, in Manorca?

Can't help with where to go, but can with where not to go! We stayed in Cala n Forcat, we did have a good time, but TBH I wouldn't go back, it was sooooooo expensive (I do mean massivly so, more expensive than the UK in fact) there is no beach to speak of, but the pool area and splash park did make up for that, and the views from the cliffs over the sea were absolutely stunning.

We went with First Choice, and have found out since returning that First Choice have a tendancy to 'move into an area' and take over a bit, bumping prices etc. so perhaps try to avoid them, or at least an area where there are a lot of First Choice hotels?

SparklyGothKat · 29/03/2008 13:33

we went to Cala'n forcat too, and I wouldn;t go back to that part again. We are going to Cala'n porter in may this time, because we were told that that side opf the island is better for the beaches

ScoobyDoo · 29/03/2008 13:34

Ah thanks for that info Natalie, a beach is very important as ds & dd love the beach, am looking for a gorgeous beach & an apartment/hotel right on one really. how the hell does one pick where to go!

ScoobyDoo · 29/03/2008 13:38

SparklyGothKat · 29/03/2008 13:41

i loved it (we are going back) its very laid back, wasn't a loud club-y style holiday, perfect for a family

chatee · 29/03/2008 13:42

i really prefer menorca to majorca as it is smaller and most resorts are quieter.there are some lovely menorcian(sp?)villages both inland and fishing villages and the port area of mahon is well worth a visit

ScoobyDoo · 29/03/2008 13:44

Ah great thats good to hear, we went to Alcudia in Majorca last time abroad & we loved it there.

Blessed2 · 29/03/2008 13:51

We went to Alcudia as well and really enjoyed it. Sorry - don't know about Menorca.

SparklyGothKat · 29/03/2008 13:55

ScoobyDoo · 29/03/2008 14:04

ScoobyDoo · 29/03/2008 14:04

ScoobyDoo · 29/03/2008 14:30

OP posts:
SparklyGothKat · 29/03/2008 15:12

Corfu has some lovely beaches, with very shallow seas for a good wade with the kids

noddyholder · 29/03/2008 17:19

We went to fornells and it was lovely

pinkteddy · 29/03/2008 17:23

We stayed in viva menorca apartments in cala n bosch. It was lovely. Nice marina - beach about 15 mins walk away. We booked through First choice but you can book independently. HTH

pinkteddy · 29/03/2008 17:24

Not especially cheap though I have to say!

ja9 · 29/03/2008 17:30

we have been twice and both times booked through mytravel.com.

found this website to be the best - many others give you a price but you have to follow the booking through to checkout to see how much all the add-ons are going to cost. with mytravel the price stated is the price charged.

we've been to two different resorts - both great. i think anywhere in menorca would be fine... just depends on the actual apartments / hotel

oh, when booking with mytravel we used a holiday review site and found it very very helpful. can't remember the name of it - someone on here will be able to tell you . i got the link from MN originally... have a feeling it was on a post by cod...

ScoobyDoo · 29/03/2008 18:06

Thanks some great advice, our kids seem to love a beach more than swimming pool, when we went to Majorca ds only used the pool twice he wanted to be on the beach all day every day, so as you can see a beach is very important to us.

am still looking but i could be looking for hours, am going to look on mytravel now ja9 thank you.

If anyone knows a good review site please could you link me to one

I like Cala Galdana best and then Santo Thomas. We booked through first choice and it was quite cheap for 6 of us. Some places are far more expensive (Santo Tomas is one) as there are few shops and mostly hotels. Holiday truths (if you google it) is good and menorca net and holidays uncovered.

NatalieJane · 29/03/2008 18:26

I think there is another review site literally called holiday reviews, just type holiday reviews into Google, it's worked for us!

I LOVE Menorca

Have been 5 times - the best family destination IMHO. Cabt beet Calan Bosch because there is loads to do plus a nice small beach and a lovely harbour.

Went to Punta Prima (very posh) and enjoyed it too.

I prefer it to Majorca as things seem to go on til very late there and its a nightmare when you here a racket after 12 when you have little ones.
