We are looking for a week to ten days in August with two kids (9 and 4). 9 year old loves adventure and activities and the 4 year old would prefer something more peaceful.

Want:

  • Somewhere with activities for the older one
  • more-than-basic accomodation
  • Some nice towns with cafes restaurants nearby to potter around in, take in some culture
  • Bike rental and nice bike paths around
  • Beach/lake nearby
  • Good chance of nice weather

Don't want:

  • Very long drive. Happy to fly/train and public transport
  • Too much heat
  • A very busy place

I am thinking somewhere near a water park/theme park would be good for my eldest.

We almost always do city breaks but this might be the year to change that and do a resort type holiday.

You don't mention budget.

My first thought was Lake Lucerne in Switzerland. There are nice little beaches, great playgrounds. You can definitely hire bikes. Might be too expensive though.

dizzydizzydizzy · 26/03/2024 17:21

Swiss kids go back to school something like 15 or 20th August.

AnotherDelphinium · 26/03/2024 17:22

How about a Mark Warner type place?

mitogoshi · 26/03/2024 17:24

What's your budget?

mitogoshi · 26/03/2024 17:26

Black Forest might be an interesting option. Trip to europa parc plus walks, bike hire etc in the forest. We swam in a lake (can't remember which one!)

I drove but fly or train to Strasbourg and rent a car/use coach perhaps

mitogoshi · 26/03/2024 17:27

Lake annecy is another good option

GrumpyPanda · 26/03/2024 17:29

Netherlands- South Holland or Zeeland coast.

dreamingofsun · 26/03/2024 17:41

south brittany at a mobile home site. though not sure what you consider basic accommodation.....some do have dishwashers.

Heath3 · 26/03/2024 17:45

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Going to go down more rabbit holes tonight.

Budget would be around 3.5k

Bavaria in Germany is lovey and there’s a huge waterpark there from memory I think.

Nicflowers82 · 26/03/2024 18:00

Ones that spring to mind that I have done with DC are Lake Garda, or Croatia. With Eurocamp or Roan holidays who both do various types of accommodation spending on budget. Generally with those sites they are well set up for bike hire and other activities .

mitogoshi · 26/03/2024 18:09

I would reconsider driving to France/Germany as it's so easy, overnight in Luxembourg to "add a country" to their list. You even avoid most the tolls going through Luxembourg.

TheRulerofThings · 26/03/2024 18:53

Look at the Kinderhotels in Austria - great for kids, lots of summer activities available locally in the larger centres and amazing food.

Can use facilities of next door Roompot beach resort. Loads of lovely town in easy reach, plus tree climbing, go ape type stuff, Neeltje Jans Delta Park, bike hire. You can order a shopping delivery plus there are restaurants and shops on the main park. Beaches nearby are gorgeous.

Friends stay at Lake Geneva every year and I think it would fit the bill. I think they stay in a smartish campsite with chalets right by the water and do watersports, tennis, cycling.

Tignes and Morzine also have lakes and plenty of summer activities available.

Pretty sure there are lots of similar options in Austria/the Tirol, have a look for Kinderhotels if you want children’s activities laid on.

Lake Garda is lovely but it may be a bit hot for much in the way of bike rides etc, it was very hot when we went at the end of May.

hellothere247 · 26/03/2024 19:57

We are staying in a ski place in the French Alps (Morzine) and then doing to lake Annacy for a few days. There are loads of activities to do in the ski place, mountain biking, climbing, swimming, go ape type thing, mountain roller coaster. Think it will be quiet and not too hot plus relatively cheap so you can get quite decent accom.

bravotango · 26/03/2024 20:02

We've booked a lodge/camping type holiday in Holland, plenty for kids, bike hire and day trips to a safari park and theme park. Definitely in budget. We are taking the ferry which does take a full day but it's only two hours from the ferry port at the other end, and we've booked a cabin on the ferry for some privacy/watch films etc

Verite1 · 26/03/2024 20:04

Lake Garda would tick all of your boxes apart from the fact it will be busy in August (though we have been twice in August and it didn’t bother us).

Eggyleggy · 26/03/2024 20:05

Stay on the French side (cheaper) of Lake Geneva. There is loads to do and lots of lovely spots along the lake (Yvoire worth a trip). If budget allows a day trip or two to Aquaparc just over the border in Switzerland which is a huge indoor and outdoor waterpark.
You are also really close to the mountains for hikes/ biking.

minipie · 26/03/2024 20:26

@Eggyleggy we are doing an Alps trip this year and Yvoire is on my list… how long is it worth spending there would you say? Any other recommendations nearby? Aquaparc sounds good (well DC would like it, I wouldn’t!) thank you!

Bjorkdidit · 27/03/2024 04:43

Doesn't fit your brief entirely but Lalandia in Billund Denmark might suit. Its a Center Parcs type place with big activity complex incl waterpark and also the original Lego land and I think a Lego house.

Billund itself isn't particularly interesting but you can visit other parts of Denmark like the west coast or Aarhus, Denmark's second city as they're about an hour away.

Northern European schools go back in mid August so after then would be a good time to go, you can fly there on Ryanair.
