Break with bored 16 DS, help!

I feel like I should take DS 16 somewhere at half term as he seems bored and has found school miserable. trouble is, I’ve totally lost confidence! We can afford a cheaply to Copenhagen possibly. I’m not sure he’ll want to traipse around a rainy city with his mum. He’s not sure what he’s interested in. Well he likes space and science not art galleries.
DH says he’ll be fine at home. He’s got new electronic gizmos to invent stuff with.
DH also can’t go, work, and doesn’t want to go away with just the three of us in the uk as it will remind him of DD who has gone no contact. Also he says even a cheaply trip will end up being a grand.
I just find it so hard to arrange a break. What do I do?
DS did say can we go away, but I don’t know where. It all looks so bleak or expensive and I’ve just lost confidence. Don’t want to drag DS to airport etc etc if it’s going to be wet and cold and miserable few days. Also planning stuff to do when we get there is terrifying - I’m bound to miss the cool stuff.
help!

Where are you - a trip to the space centre in Leicester and a curry is a good call, does he like trains? The rainway museum in york maybe? But I think you are overthinking it, let him sleep in, do his own think and take him out for dinner tonight

Awww bless you @Escapetosomewhere can you just do a wee road trip or train trip to that science /space place in Leicester ? Or a London trip to the science museum? Just to do a small overnight and spend that bit of time away?

Thanks everyone!
i can’t leave it alone. Why?! I’m still feeling guilty. He doesn’t want to go anywhere nearby with his dear old mum. Im STILL looking at last minute.com, but it’s 800 odd for wed to sat in Amsterdam and a shared bed, and i know he won’t be bored for basically 2 days, but I can’t quite bring myself to go for it.

suggested train to nearby city for museum and nice foreign food, or oxford where I have a chum, but he’s not interested. He looked up at London but of course the trains are being mended at the weekend🙄and Leicester is an insane 7 hours train from us!
I am my own worst enemy. It’s too late, too expensive and I’m STILL going round and round in circles. Why? why can’t I just think sod it and crack on with my own stuff?
he’s actually asked to get the pizza oven out so am off to make dough. That’s a result!
I’m probably giving him hang ups and should just make dough and leave him to get bored, as suggested by pp. meanwhile I’m getting all stressed and not achieving anything. Please tell me other people do this - or how to get over it!
gah!

Don’t feel guilty! Stop it!

You will feel worse if you shell out hundreds to sit in a rainy city somewhere. When did it happen that teens need foreign trips every flipping school
holiday?!

Do a decent day out to assuage your guilt and offer to do an activity with him.

Make pizza and watch the Godfather trilogy we did that with our 15 year old was weirdly enjoyable.

Escapetosomewhere · 13/02/2024 15:24

Thanks thea and midt and four and everyone. Nice to know there’s people out there!
Well he’s just emerged long enough to make pizza and now scuttled back to his room, so that’s a result! I’ll see if I can get him into the godfather - thanks !
Only 5 days to go 🙂

If you can get to Stansted relatively easy then I recommend a cheap Ryanair flight to Poitiers. Visit Futurescope (you can also get hotel and park tickets as a bundle) it really is value for money and sounds ideal for your DS.
