City break not too far from coast

Hello,

My adult daughter has a special birthday coming up and I'd like to take her for a long weekend away. Probably limited to Europe.

Has anyone any ideas? Would quite like a city, not too far from a coast.. thinking maybe an overnight stay in the city, then a couple of nights at the coast?

Barcelona is unfortunately out as she has plans to go there. She went to Rome last year.

Thanks!

We're going to Gran Canaria to Las Palmas for a long weekend. It has a couple of beaches, old town, shops and our hotel has 2 restaurants with Michelin stars so I think it'll be fine for just a few days. We chose it admittedly for the sunshine in Mid March and the hotel looks lovely.

Dubrovnik? Gorgeous

ACurlyWurlyTail · 24/01/2024 16:09

Malaga is great for a city break. Clean, beautiful , cultural, foodie, beach, bars, tapas. very easy to get to and very affordable. fly to malaga airport and get a train from there to the city centre.

Sorry maybe not big enough to count as a city.

heldinadream · 24/01/2024 16:14

Lisbon ticks all your boxes!

Lunaballoon · 24/01/2024 16:15

Lisbon might fit the bill. Fabulous city and a short train or car ride to several beach resorts.

tokesqueen · 24/01/2024 16:16

Literally just back from Valencia. 20 mins from the beaches for 1.5 euro on the bus and a lovely city.
Low twenties these past few days.
Stay in the city though, far more happening there.

TheTripThatWasnt · 24/01/2024 16:17

Porto. Beach is just a tram ride away, and plenty to enjoy in the city.

Dibilnik · 24/01/2024 16:27

Biarritz is kind of amazing. Grand buildings just a stone's throw from crashing surf. Happy vibe.

SLeanne · 24/01/2024 16:35

Lisbon. Cheap as well.

Nice. Plenty of gorgeous beaches nearby, Villefranche, Menton, Antibes.

Catania. Lovely beaches all along the coast there, especially Mazzaro and from there you can get the cable car up into Taormina aswell.

What would you recommend to do there?

reluctantbrit · 24/01/2024 17:50

Lisbon or Palma

MrsMoastyToasty · 24/01/2024 17:53

Valletta, Malta.

How about Split in Croatia?

No1HolidayPlanner · 24/01/2024 17:56

Lisbon.. a great city. An easy train ride to the beach at Cascais 😊

QueSyrahSyrah · 24/01/2024 17:56

Palma is wonderful.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 24/01/2024 18:58

Alicante
Malaga
Valencia
Palma Mallorca

All cities with beaches.

We stayed in Palma over May Day weekend a couple of years ago - hotel on the front overlooking port/marina view across to City & Cathedral. Walkable into the centre (although we got taxi back). Lovely city centre. The trip out to Soller recommended. We didn't spend time on the beach although we had a meal at a restaurant overlooking beach.

Valencia - recent stay in the centre - lovely City. Bus around 20 mins to the beach which looked nice but was quiet when we went (early November )

Can't remember Alicante too well - brief trip between Christmas & New Year 2019. It's quite small but seemed nice, has small beach and marina. It's odd that I can't remember it too well now as that little break kept me going through lockdown !

Lisbon! Best of both worlds

mobogogi · 24/01/2024 19:01

Not a city but look at Taormina, Sicily, it's pretty special as a place, cable car to the beach and cable car up mt Etna. Warm earlier and later due to how far south. Cultural heritage too there

Maddy70 · 24/01/2024 19:03

Lisbon would be perfect

Dubrovnik? Gorgeous

I was going to suggest this. I haven’t been but my close friend has been several times and loved it, she says it is really beautiful and relaxing.
