Raining in spain

Supermom24 · 11/10/2023 19:43

We have booked our first family holiday to pollenca Spain on Monday and looking at the weather forecast its supposed to rain the whole week 😫 I know weather in October can be unpredictable but we didn't want to go in the middle of the heatwave with 2 young babies so decided to wait until October but are gutted the weather is going to be that bad.
Has anyone ever been to pollenca and can recommend things to do on rainy days just so we can make the most of the holiday even if it isn't beach days etc like we imagined
Thank you

It isn’t unusual I’m afraid. The weather in Spain isn’t that different to the weather here at this time of year.

oohsharon · 11/10/2023 19:46

Presumably you mean Majorca? If so, enjoy the pleasant weather Grin

🤣🤣 have a day off. Of course it is

The Balearics are quite rainy in October. You would've been better off booking southern Spain or the Canaries at this time of year. It probably won't be raining all day, it's usually in short sharp bursts.

Have a look at this for some ideas: www.seemallorca.com/news/rainy-day-activities-in-mallorca-698697

There are some fantastic caves, but not sure on suitability for the little ones. A car will be a must though.

Aemet (Spanish version of the met office) are predicting rain from early next week... and it is Mallorca - it's the correct spelling in Spanish.

I mean on average the temperatures are higher but it’s typically quite rainy in Majorca in October

RoyKentFanclub · 11/10/2023 20:01

I’m sure there will still be lots to do though

Amethystanddiamonds · 11/10/2023 20:04

Do you have a car? Plenty of indoor sites in Palma. The cathedral, the fort, indoor markets, etc. Depending on the age of the babies, the aquarium is good. There are the caves of drach. I've been through them with young children in slings. The cuevos del hams would also be doable with a child in a sling as well but there isn't as much too them, we went more for dinosaurland next door. There is a monastery at lluc. You can drive the tramantua road. Or get the train from Palma to soller.

RSintes · 11/10/2023 20:05

You'll be alright OP, the rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain, not in Majorca.

oohsharon · 11/10/2023 20:44

I'm not Spanish 🙃

Supermom24 · 12/10/2023 06:47

I don't know what this weather app is but I'm going to stick to this one and keep my fingers crossed 🤞

Next year we will definitely look at somewhere like that. Looking at the forecast they've had this week I was hoping it would follow through to next week but looks like England has the sun and Spain has the rain 😬 we've hired a car so there's plenty of options to look at, thank you :)

Sure but you corrected the correct spelling as if Mallorca is wrong. Cringing for you!

mateysmum · 12/10/2023 09:02

Being an island the Mallorca climate is different but currently I'm sitting in Alicante and its about 24c will be 27 later and clear blue skies. Fingers crossed for you.

mondaytosunday · 12/10/2023 09:07

My sister goes to Almeria tomorrow. A couple days cloud but the rest is mid 20s and sun. Your forecast according to my weather app says 30% chance of rain a couple days at the start - that's nothing and I really don't think you have to worry!
October is a fine time to go!

Agreed and believe me, when they say it might rain it never bloody does.
Midday and afternoon temperatures are always way hotter.

Sallycinnamum · 12/10/2023 09:12

Unfortunately April and October can be be very wet in Majorca but we went a few weeks ago and the forecast was dire. Ended up being sunny and very hot. Not a drop of rain!

How so? @oohsharon was the first person on the thread to mention Majorca or Mallorca.

Get over yourself. Why does someone need to come on and say they are “cringing”. It makes you sound stupider than using the non Spanish spelling.

Sorry, derail, but I've always been confused about the Mallorca/Majorca thing. Mallorca is obviously correct due to Spanish pronunciation, as Majorca would be MaHorca Confused

So I googled and there seems to be a theory that the British tourist industry(?) invented "Majorca", because us silly Brits couldn't cope with LL sounding like a Y. But... J doesn't sound like a Y either, so why didn't they make it Mayorca?! Bizarre.

I grimace every time I hear people fucking up paella and tortilla Grin

Northern Spain and Balearics are temperamental in October. There was some awful weather over the summer this year too, throughout the country.

Shadow1986 · 12/10/2023 09:29

We went to Majorca in September and we did have a bit of rain but it was heavy downpour showers rather than continuous rain all day so hopefully even if it says rain, it will just mean showers.
