Never travelled alone before - turkey?

fabmaccawhackythumbsaloft · 06/09/2023 23:17

I've found an all inclusive for turkey for 10 nights for next year in sept so,hopefully not too many kids around (nothing against them just done my stint !)

It's a 5* hotel

I'm a bit of a wuss about holidaying alone as never done it but I'm assuming this is a safe bet and safe for a lone traveller , I mean it's a package 5* all inclusive, I'm not planning on backpacking through the Amazon or anything

I just want a relaxing break in the sun , nothing taxing , not bothered about even leaving the resort tbh this time , just something to get my confidence up to do more alone , so 10 days in a warm sunny climate with the safety of knowing everything is paid for

I'm in my 50s and this is a big deal for me and not had a holiday for 6 years

Nothing can go wrong can it ......I mean it's a safe bet

Thanks you - very valuable to know and if I were planning a sightseeing holiday alone I'd give it a swerve but as I'm going for a very lazy option , and not planning to leave the resort , I might chance it

All inclusive you should be fine OP and if your going with a holiday company they warn the staff at these places not to fraternise with the guests . Last thing those places want is to lose the custom of large companies. Just be careful going off site and don't go off site at night .

I would 100% go and am really envious. It looks absolutely lovely

FettleOfKish · 07/09/2023 08:18

Can't comment on Turkey as I haven't been, but I've had a glance at the hotel reviews and all those names mentioned are giving me huge reg flags.

They're a sure sign that people have been coerced / bribed / persuaded in some way into writing them, or they're straight up fake.

I spend a decent amount of my time reading hotel reviews (work related) and the odd staff name being mentioned here and there is quite common, especially from repeat guests. Multiple names in every single review is very fishy.

I am a cautious person, and possibly around your age OP. I would go, you are going to a lovely resort, you will have everything you need without having to go outside of the resort. Of course an organised sightseeing tour would be fine, picked up by coach dropped back etc. I would go, relax and enjoy and get my money’s worth from the All inc 😂 have a great time.

We've been to turkey several times. Stayed at 4&5* resorts and have felt incredibly safe. Staff were some of the nicest we've met anywhere. I'd have no hesitation going alone as a woman.

Janiebirdy · 07/09/2023 08:56

The positives: the resort looks lovely and there’s a holiday rep you can contact if you have queries/problems. September is a good month to go to Dalaman as you’ll be bumping into older UK people who want to kick back and relax. I’d say you’ll probably be ok. You can join some FB or TripAdvisor discussion boards and connect with some very helpful, experienced expats.

The negatives: Turkey has become politically more conservative over the last 10 yrs and some folk can be odd about women travelling alone. Don’t leave your personal belongings like keys, phones etc in your hotel room when you’re not there. Be careful of sharing email/mobile info with the hotel as this info could be used to trace social media accounts.

I had alot of harassment on one holiday in the Dalaman area of Turkey and it made me aware of just how vulnerable you can be even in a ‘safe’ hotel. I suspect it would’ve been a lot worse if I had been alone.

Well I've only searched tui and I put any destination on 5*

I'm still leaning heavily toward the resort in turkey

Yep looked at some in Greece /cypress but they are ridiculous prices at around 4k for 10 days I can go to St Lucia for less for a fortnight

I really think I'd be fine

OP the resort in Turkey sounds perfect, if you do want to do some excursions they are good value and the boat trips are very relaxing. Turkish baths are a good way to relax too, treatments will be a more expensive in the hotel than outside but still cheaper than the UK.
Have fun, I absolutely love Turkey.

I just registered with mumsnet to specifically answer your post. I live in a holiday resort in Turkey and have done for 25 years. Although I acknowledge that there are dodgy men everywhere, the general pictutre being painted of Turkey is completely wrong. It is a very respectful country where the people are the kindest and most helpful you could find. As for dress code, yes, if you went to inland or to the east of Turkey, the clothing is more reserved, but any holiday resort is like anywhere you would find in Spain etc. The Turkish people dress exactly the same as the tourists. I am on our boat at the moment and I could take a photo to prove this. Don't worry at all about coming here solo.

Thank you for registering to reply because I felt people were being a little dramatic given I'm not staying at hostels or wearing a bikini to the local market , I'm planning a very sedate holiday in an all inclusive 5* resort ,

Thats hugely reassuring so thank you

Sh said the scarf were so lovely she tipped and trust me she's as tight as a ducks arse so that's saying something.
She's in a same sex couple so if she felt safe I'll be fine

I was only 14 and hounded constantly, pushed into a corner and kissed, proposed to, offered to be swapped for chickens, felt up and locked in a sauna, dragged into shops etc fucking horrendous place for women. Stay on the resort if you want to go

fabmaccawhackythumbsaloft · 07/09/2023 09:53

I'l be in the resort and if I do
Book anything it will be in an organised group and I'll dress respectfully

I think you'll be safe if you stay on the resort, just don't let any of the young Turkish men convince you that they've fallen in love with you!

felisha54 · 07/09/2023 10:23

Hi op, just seem your update. I stayed in the TUI blue tropical in Sarigerme and it was fab. Felt very safe and lots of reps around. The village of Sarigerme is small and safe. We didn't get hounded at all. No need to cover up etc. a few pound from hotel in taxi. very fast transfer from Dalaman. I'd highly recommend basket travel for any tours. The 12 island boat tour and mud baths were great. I'd have no qualms going here on my own.

MaggieFS · 07/09/2023 10:25

OP, do it! I posted initially about the lecherous men I encountered, but it was a totally different sort of holiday, as are the vast majority of similar examples being posted.

You've confirmed the beaches are private and you've got a first had recommendation from someone you know and trust. You won't get better than that on mn.

Have a fab time, I am very jealous!

PizzaPastaWine · 07/09/2023 10:53

Sounds like bliss OP.

Don't go to the canaries - they are soulless and windy.

I've not stayed at the Hilton Sarigerme but friends highly recommend it if you are after that resort. Might be worth a look. They have high standards and return annually.

hilbil21 · 07/09/2023 11:04

I would go myself... but as an adult I would pick that hotel! Do you have a budget?

hilbil21 · 07/09/2023 11:04

*wouldn't

Fifiellz · 07/09/2023 11:14

I've just got back from a holiday at a 5* Turkish AI in Antalya with my family.

I would go back again by myself no problem, just stick to the pre-booked Tui transfer (don't use private taxis) and once in resort stay there.

In fact

No no real budget but want to stay within reason

For instance the Maldives were coming up at between 6k and 10k which I wouldn't pay

I'd go to 2.5 k probably but not much more

I couldn't see many other hotels at 5* adult, only but I'll look again - I thought mid sept it would be quite quiet for children as it's term time
