Mallorca vs Lanzarote

Supermumwannabe1 · 31/08/2023 15:30

Hey Parents,

Trying to choose a holiday destination for my family of 4 (Mum, Dad, 5yr & 2yr old). I think i have it narrowed down to Mallorca or Lanzarote however, I am terrible at making the final decision - FOMO!!! So here I am seeking your help. The 2 resorts are Playa Blanca in Lanzarote or Playa de Muro in Mallorca. We love having plenty of fun things to do - waterparks, zoos etc. Needs to have a great family vibe and great food.

Any help would be greatly appreciated please.

TIA

What time of year?

Bullshot · 31/08/2023 15:46

As above - when do you plan to go

I love Playa Blanca but I tend to keep my trips to the Canary Islands for our winter months and visit places within a two hour flight time in the summer

CeeceeBloomingdale · 31/08/2023 15:47

Playa de Muro has a stunning beach and great restaurants but it also has a huge mosquito problem

CeeceeBloomingdale · 31/08/2023 15:49

To add given the rest of your brief I'm surprised you've picked Playa de Muro. Maybe try Palma Nova, great food options there now and much more for the little ones. Also hardly any mosquitos.

Sommerled · 31/08/2023 15:57

If go for Puerto Pollensa in Mallorca.

Depends on time of year but Lanzarote would be best for Oct/Nov - April and Mallorca for May - Sept/Oct

FullFatPhil · 31/08/2023 16:01

For plenty of fun things for little ones I'd look at Gran Canaria or Tenerife not Lanzarote.

Chewbecca · 31/08/2023 16:02

Majorca is much nicer than Lanzarote IMO but Lanzarote has much better weather if you are travelling between October-May.

Supermumwannabe1 · 31/08/2023 21:12

@Bullshot @CeeceeBloomingdale @Chewbecca @FullFatPhil @ReviewingTheSituation @Sommerled we would heading in July/Aug time. Don't like the thought of mosquitos lol! Playa Muro was a travel agent recommendation

Mallorca over Canaries every time!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 31/08/2023 23:03

We were in Playa De Muro last August and we all had at least 50 mosquito bites, never had them anywhere else in Mallorca or anywhere else. Everyone else was the same.

I work in travel and we normally go to places less typical of families (mine are teens and teens). Muro is just that, more a couples place, near Port Alcudia but too long a walk for the age of your children. There is literally nothing there for children, you will be leaving the resort to find anything.

We went to Palma Nova this July / August which is more typically a family place and were pleasantly surprised as we were dreading it being too brits abroad but it was very multicultural and had great restaurants. There are things to do for families and the buses are cheap and easy if you need to get to neighbouring resorts for water parks etc.

Canaries aren't as pretty as Balearics but they tend to be cheaper. It's a longer flight. The beaches in the Balearics are perfect for little ones.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 31/08/2023 23:11

Meant to say the beach in Muro was heaving the whole time, little room to move whereas Palma Nova was very spacious. I'm concerned an agent would recommend Muro to you when it really doesn't meet your brief. The mosquitos are due to a nature reserve behind the resort, the stagnant water from the lake and canals are a breeding ground (this also affects Alcudia).

Menorca is great for little ones as all the beaches are shallow and calm. Mallorca and Menorca are both stunning but I don't know the best family areas in Mallorca.

cocksstrideintheevening · 01/09/2023 12:24

Any of the Balearics over the canaries. I am a bite magnet and have been to Ibiza three times in the last two years and not a single bite.

Short flight, beautiful beaches, loads to do.

usernother · 01/09/2023 12:33

Mallorca without a doubt. It's a beautiful island with lots to do. Shorter flight. Lanzarote isn't beautiful at all. Longer flight.

fettuccini · 01/09/2023 13:13

Mallorca over Lanzagrotte any day!

BendingSpoons · 01/09/2023 13:20

There's lots to do in Lanzarote if you don't want to be on the beach all the time. The zoo with splash park, new water park for younger kids, boat trips to see wildlife. I don't know that area of Majorca well enough to compare.

Mallorca every time for me. Shorter flight & beautiful island. Haven’t stayed in Playa de Muro so can’t comment on there specifically.

We usually stay in Cala D’Or which is packed full of lovely hotels and restaurants and has lovely coves with smaller beaches. I have friends with younger kids who swear by Club Mac in Alcudia but haven’t been myself.

@Absolutelynotfor2019 hope you’re having a lovely time! It’s always been mine and DHs favourite place for a nice break. Hoping to take our DS next year for the first time 😊
Hope you’ve been and had an ice cream from Cala D’Ice 😍

I've been to Club Mac in Alcudia. Never again. It wasn't the hotel. It was the people staying there.

FullFatPhil · 02/09/2023 10:38

Good god, did someone just recommend Club Mac?

Fuck me OP, don't go there. I don't like Majorca because I have been bitten to death there every time. It's just not worth it for me.

SageFennel · 02/09/2023 15:21

I love Lanzarote but go in winter, in July I prefer a shorter flight and the Med.
With children that age I would look at menorca. Playa Bosch or Santo Tomas.

Heading for Majorca next week, not been there for years, and not keen on hearing all these mozzie tales! I've never been bitten in the Canaries.

We are staying in Cala Ferrera and this is view from apartment. Weather rubbish today so am off to take 3year old on the Road train which goes all over Cala D’Or .

Weather forecast fabulous for next week. Haven’t been bitten by any mosquitoes but a bird 💩 on my daughter twice yesterday 😂
