20th wedding anniversary 10-12k budget

Hi I am looking for opinions on where you would go for a 20th wedding anniversary holiday in April 2025. DH said I can pick wherever I would like to go. We have a budget of 12k for the two of us. We got married when we were both 22 and had our kids young, so we've never been on a holiday without them. We are a well travelled family, so I am open to pretty much anywhere. Thanks!

Rocky Mountaineer train from Banff to Vancouver followed by Alaska cruise. Or vise-versa!

GoingGoingUp · 20/08/2023 11:14

Do you want to do as much as you can for your money, or have an experience you wouldn’t usually have? As in fly business or first class to a luxury hotel and relax there for a week, or see as much of a place as possible?

To be fair you probably can do both with that budget. For my 30th a few years ago, we flew business class to Australia, stayed at a 5* hotel in Sydney, travelled up to the Whitsundays and did luxury there too, and it was £10k all in.

I’d do China probably or Japan both on my bucket list

I had suggested Hawaii for our silver wedding anniversary (always wanted to go there) and have been so sad to see the devastation that’s happened there.

Santorini is next on my list.

The Maldives? Pick a couple only resort.

alwayshavepeckham · 20/08/2023 11:28

What do you enjoy doing on holiday?
Sightseeing, history, hiking, beaches?

I had thought about travelling in business class, just to make it a bit more special, so would probably allocate some of the budget for this. I love to sight see, but I also love laying by a pool too lol
I think I just really want to spend some quality time with DH. He works extremely hard and we don't get a lot of time together these days.

Both our kids are big Anime geeks so they'd kill us if we went to Japan without them! Confused
Definitely would love to visit though!!

Slightly different circumstances but when my great aunt died she left us £50k in her will which could ONLY be used for travel. She never married and worked as an air hostess and wanted us to just see the world.

We spent a lot of time deliberating as to whether to do several smaller trips or one big one. Family of four.

In the end we decided to go all out and go on a ridiculous trip just because it’s something we would never do. We did consider going to South America or Japan and touring around but in the end, the business class trip to the Maldives won. We stayed at a stupidly expensive hotel (The Nautilus - would highly recommend) and the whole thing was a trip we will remember forever. We even had the opportunity to upgrade to first class on the way back which we took.

It just felt SO special. Just doing something that we would never get the opportunity to do again.

Touring trips were much cheaper and we thought we could just do when we retire.

A luxury safari?

PinkPondQueen · 20/08/2023 11:56

What about a twin centre - New Zealand & one of the South Pacific islands? Or the Seychelles or a really nice hotel in Mauritius?

DameEtna · 20/08/2023 11:56

Langkawi - the Datai 😍

Hbh17 · 20/08/2023 12:17

I would say safari, but I'm not sure whether April is the best time of year - might depend on the country. Or you could postpone to a more suitable time (e.g. South Africa in August).
Or a beautiful European city, but in a very high end hotel, first class travel etc - that would soon eat up £10k!

cherryassam · 20/08/2023 12:39

Some ideas:

Borneo - some time at an eco-lodge visiting wildlife reserves, then some time at a luxury beach resort

Costa Rica - some time in the rainforest followed by some time at the beach

Peru - Macchu Pichu, the Sacred Valley, Cusco, Lima - Peru is one of the best places we’ve ever been

Mexico - could do a mix of beach and sightseeing

DisplayPurposesOnly · 20/08/2023 12:47

Zambia - safari in South Luangwa National Park. Season opens mid May

alwayshavepeckham · 20/08/2023 12:52

For a beautiful beach I’d do
Maldives, Mauritius, Bahamas out islands, Seychelles out islands, Thai Islands.
for £12k that would be in Economy.
or how about
Reid’s Palace on Madeira in a very luxury room?
Amalfi coast in a boutique hotel.
I’d browse Mr&Mrs Smith for ideas

ThePuma · 20/08/2023 12:58

South East Asia is great that time of year.

I’d probably do 2 places. Check out the following:-

https://www.songsaa-privateisland.com/ - quite Maldivian, an amazing eco-resort.

https://www.inialathailand.com/accomodation - the Penthouse would be ideal. Ridiculously luxurious.

https://www.thedatai.com/ - somebody mentioned above. Was booked into this but had to cancel due to Covid. Supposed to be amazing.

It will be Songkran while you’re there. Maybe try and do Angkor Wat/Siem Reap at that time as you travel between the two resorts.

Travel round India on a luxury train ?

BLT24 · 20/08/2023 13:29

I would do a twin centre - activity followed by relaxation

Dubai/Abu Dhabi/Sri Lanka and Maldives
Bangkok and Koh Samui/Phuket/Yao Noi
Cape Town/Kenya and Mauritius/Seychelles
Singapore and Langkawi

Specific hotels:
Giraffe Manor Nairobi
Delamere Graff Cape Town
Six senses Yoa Noi
The Datai Langkawi
Dusit Thani Maldives
Lux South Ari Maldives
Lux Le Morne Mauritius
Tri Sri Lanka
Jumeriah Al Naseem Dubai

or
Greek Islands hopping
Italian Road trip

Thanks everyone! Some great suggestions, I'll check them all out now.

The Datai hotel looks amazing! I had not heard of this one before, definitely going to look into this one more!

DameEtna · 20/08/2023 16:50

If you go to the Datai/ langkawi you can combine it with somewhere else like Kuala Lumpur or Penang if you fancy somewhere different as well?

LuckOfTheDrawer · 20/08/2023 16:53

New Zealand without a doubt
